I bought my V Sharp classic 2 about two weeks ago. It took my half an hour to sharpen my old kitchen knife knives. They haven't been this sharp in years. I bought the ceramic hones for it as well, that really added to the sharpness. I was so impressed I ordered their Multi Edge sharpener. That arrived late today, I haven't used it yet but it sure looks like a high quality unit. I'll be sharpening the Workshop fabric scissors tomorrow. Great quality and fantastic service. Well done Warthog.

Well. I'll be damned. I've been using my Warthog V4 for two years at 25 degrees and never was able to get past the 'sort of sharp' stage. After watching your video, I tried flipping over to the steel side, set the angle at 30 degrees and after about 25-30 swipes I was shaving arm hair off like a pro. Thank You!!!!!

For sure, get the finer diamond sticks as well as the ceramic ones. Once you get done with the 320grit, you can stay with the 600 or the 1000grit diamond, finish up with the ceramic. Night and day John

I think the issue was the changing of the angle from 25 degrees to 30 degrees. Next time try the same angle for both. For a similar sharpener, that has always given me great results, I would recommend the Spyderco sharpmaker. Great for most folks needs, and easy to use. For more advanced sharpening, you can’t go wrong with a Wicked Edge. However, it has a high entry price point and fairly steep learning curve.
@zugmeister3143 жыл бұрын
30 degrees is what you sharpen axes and such at. The wide angle gives you better edge strength at the expense of sharpness. 20 degrees OTOH will give you a weak but very very sharp edge, all other things being equal. Sharpening to 25 then honing at 30 makes no sense at all, even after listening to his explanation.

That sounds like another made in China product and it probably won't work on some of my knives which require a 15 degree angle when sharpening them. I purchased a sharpener made by Chef's Choice which will sharpens both pocket knives and kitchen knives and I love it. That sharpener was recommended by the people on America's Test Kitchen and they said it was the best in their test.

Those Types of Sharpeners will only eat at the Blade, Over a Period of a Year of Sharpening the Same Knife you will be able to Tell. The Only Real Reliable Sharpening Stone is an Oil Stone and will not Eat up the Blade Like a Wet or Dry Stone. I have used All Three Types, I have been Sharpening Knives Almost 50yrs One of my Hobbies is Collecting Knives. I have Found the Oil Stones Do a Lot Better Job than any of the wet or Dry Stones. The Blade will stay Sharp Longer and have a Lot Better Edge, and it will Shave the Hair off your Arm Very Easy and Smooth. If Someone had a Knife they Cared a Lot about the Oil Stone Should be the Sharpener of Choice.

Makes perfect sense to me, because watching this thing trying to sharpen a knife was really hard to watch as apposed to the smooth action of an oil stone, 😃👍

What type of oil Stone do you use and what grit is it. I have the old Arkansas Tri Stone
@docbrown65504 жыл бұрын
@@JamesWhite-tg4kw I have the (Arkansas Type) Three Stones start out with rough, then Medium, then go to the Fine Stone then I found and purchased an ( extra Fine ) Stone and finish with it, I use honing oil on all of the Stones, after I finish I hit it on a Long piece of Leather. The Stones ( Does not Wear your Blades Out ) and you have to be extra careful using the Knife or you will cut yourself Bigtime. After you sharpen a knife this way they stay sharp a Longggg Time. On another Note I only depend on Buck Knives they have the most Dependable Metal in the Blades. Works awesome on Pocket Knives and Full Tang Knives. I have been doing this for 50 years and they have never Failed me yet. Mine are Three sperate Stones the same as the Tri Stones........I have used other types of Stones but they have a Big tendency to eat the Blades up and I can't see using them when to me they just Destroy a Good Knife.

I've used a ton of sharpening systems but IMHO ceramic rods seem to work the best for keeping my knives popping sharp. I think some folks just let their knives get to beat up and then have to go to town on them removing a ton of life off the edge. Good maintenance on your blade like a quick swipe on a ceramic white rod and leather strop will save you money and time.😉 I know you already know this and probably keep most of your favorite blades in prime condition.
@ee2224 жыл бұрын
i'm not a spyderco fan-boy (don't particularly like their knives -- not sayin' that their knives are junk, just sayin' i don't like them) but when it comes to the spyderco sharpener, i'd buy it long before i'd buy the "warthog". the "warthog" sharpener seems to have 2 major issues. 1. it takes forever to get a good edge when compared to the speed of the spyderco and other similar sharpeners and 2. the sharpening steels of the "warthog" removes too much metal and will drastically shorten the life of your blades. i'd much rather use ceramic rods (like on my spyderco). the spyderco's ceramic rods produce a much faster and sharper result, is easy to use and costs less $$$ too. just my opinion. there are times when carbide steels are needed (like when doing a re-profile or needing to resurrect a severely damaged blade), but those times should occur sparingly and not for regular sharpening/maintenance.
@SurvivalOnPurpose4 жыл бұрын
there are no carbide steels in the Warthog. The sharpening stones have a 325 grit diamond side and a smooth "butcher steel" side.

Hi Brian, I have a few different sharpening systems and with all of them either water or oil has to used to create a slurry which takes away metal fileings that the sharpener has removed, but in this vid I havent seen you use any liquid, when you were dragging the knife through the sharpener it sounded very dry which would mean no paper cutting edge no matter how many times you drag the knife through. Ive watched your vids for years and they always perk me up keep up the good work

Hold the paper straight, careful not to cut yourself, between fingers. With the paper straight, a sharp knife will cut smoothly. A dull knife will not. It's not how the knife is used. It's how the paper is held.

I just don't think you're good at cutting paper. Its not as simple as it looks, of course a sharp knife helps. Since yours shaved arm hair it should cut paper ok. You seem to be slamming the blade into the paper. You have to put the edge on paper and then cut it in a slicing motion or if your knife is really sharp just a push cut. I don't use regular paper for sharpness testing, ill start with phonebook paper or a receipt then move to a paper towel and toilet paper. Also if a knife shaves hair by gliding it above the skin you know its pretty sharp. Personally I would never use this sharpener but I can see how it can be nice for everyday Joe's to use.
