Like you, I prefer a thin pocket knife, and thin blades slice so much better. The problem with so many 'modern' slip joint folders is the thickness of the blade stock. It's supposed be a pocket knife, not a folding axe! I've just pushed the button on one of these in the Northfield Elderberry Jigged Bone. I liked the Canvas Micarta too, particularly as it's the more user-friendly Tidioute, but I was seduced by the deep red colour...Can't wait for it to arrive!

My #82 Northfield Possum Skinner in Elderberry Jigged Bone has just arrived! Very pleased indeed, an interesting take on the Northfield theme, because it's equally a Tidioute to my eye - ordinary nail nicks, no half stops, all that's making it a Northfield is the blade etch, polish, UN-X-LD shield and the grooved bolsters. No matter, it's a lovely knife and feels great both in hand and in pocket. Yes, a little blade rub but that's near-unavoidable on a congress arrangement using a shared spring. My wharncliffe doesn't spring into the open position, same as yours, but it seems solid enough once it's there - it could be because it's designed to only operate on half the spring's width. Fit and finish are top-grade and the colour of the bone is gorgeous. I'm sure I'll be using this knife a lot, but not for skinning possums unfortunately, as we don't have them here in England.

@@KnifeThoughts Just an update Logan after 3 years of ownership - this knife keeps on getting better and better, with use the secondary blade has now cured its action and springs open as it should. The recent release of the #81 Coon Skinners is almost a follow-on, and I bought a couple of those. I reckon this is the better knife though... Meanwhile, I was lucky enough to get hold of a 2014 Natural Stag (with lovely UN-X-LD shield!!) Dixie Stock Knife which is just crazy beautiful, so I'm becoming a big fanboy of this #82 frame.

I bought that same Dixie stockman cuz of these videos. I also polished my bolsters liners and shield

The Dixie Stockman is the ultimate stockman configuration IMHO

Logan fantastic video. As a limey from the uk i love getting the whole story on these traditionals. Im just getting into them so eager to learn all about the patterns. So thank you for taking the time to share in full. Atb paddy. 👍☘️😀

No problem Paddy! That's why I decided to make videos: as a record for myself and to give others a chance to see knives they might not otherwise. I've been meaning to ask, what does atb mean?

Awesome video man! Was waiting all day to watch it. I'm so close to getting my sambar stag 82 and can't wait

They're both great knives. I think they're both a joy to look at and would make great users, but that the Stockman leans more toward the former and the Possum Skinner leans more toward the latter.
@popsforgeblacksmithing47935 жыл бұрын
former and latter?

Great videos. I recently picked up a Dixie stockman but I am thinking about a possum skinner for the thinner Carry profile. The 2 blades are really all I need. Haven’t been a huge fan of the brown mustard Micarta though. Will that darken to a more true brown overtime or can it be darkened with an oil rub? Or will it always retain a yellow hue?
@KnifeThoughts4 жыл бұрын
It does darken some with use and hand oils and such

The natural Canvas Micarta looks great on yours (with the rounding as you said). Very nice pull and snap also. I'm happy that GEC is doing so much in Micarta these days. IMO fewer and fewer people are all-out in love with stag covers anymore; maybe really brightly coloured bone also (maybe a bit tacky to some?). Instead people want rugged materials with great feel, not too loud colours, and them ageing without ever having to worry about them. Mica just fits this so well. Personally I'm also always happy with Delrin in a nice color (hating Case's slick black Delrin), but that's apparently not popular with everybody.
@KnifeThoughts5 жыл бұрын
I like lots of different handle materials. GEC has done a dizzying array of handles. I hope they get back to some of their older handle materials also.

So far, I cant find any other review of the possum skinner but yours. Thank you for that. I have this in Elderberry jigged bone on order from Knivesshipfree.

Honestly, I don’t know. I don’t like Buck’s stockman and have only had a couple from Case that I wouldn’t necessarily recommend. Maybe a Rough Ryder

Would the sheepsfoot blade being thinner hold up to being a wood carving knife?
@KnifeThoughts5 жыл бұрын
You couldn't do any big prying cuts with it but otherwise yes

@@KnifeThoughts thanks, I think I might go with a stockman a little thicker both blade and handle

Yes I probably would suggest the stockman version.
