I was a Marine Sgt. it eludes me why people reference the Ka-bar as also a utility knife, it is not. Its sole design purpose was as a fighting knife for those times when you run outta ammo, for which it does well. Had to give mine up ages ago. Now at 69 my son gifted me one for Christmas this year and it brought a tear to my eye. For me, the best knife ever. I think I’ll preserve and mount this on a plaque as a hand me down to my boys from the ole Sarge. An idiot once said if they bring a knife to a fight, bring a gun. Marines are equal opportunity fighters, we bring both a knife and a gun to a fight. Ya’ll have a nice day, Marines are standing guard.

Kabar makes great knives. I really enjoy using the MK1 Navy for utility and bushcraft tasks due to its flat grind. The Marine fighting knife is always with my defensive gear. Both truly great designs from a time where men understood the use and application of a functional blade.

I agree 100%. Not the best at any one thing but it does everything very well. I’ve even cleaned fish with it. I’m a woodworker so I always have a mineral oil/beeswax mix on hand. It’s the Franks Red Hot sauce of finishes: I put that shit on everything. I mix it slightly heavy on the wax for the leather handle. You couldn’t scuba dive with it but rain beads right off of it. Plus it smells great. Mine smells like leather and honey.

Other Marines and I have talked knives on more than a few occasions. The Ka-Bar USMC F/UK is regarded as a venerable historical artifact, often given as a going away gift for retirement, transfer, etc. As a knife it is largely uncarried since the new bayonet came into service in the 00s. The OKC bayonet is a scaled up, more traditional Bowie. That said, most current and former military men I have talked to think of it as serviceable to good at everything, but great at nothing. That is a compliment not an insult.

Wipe the leather handle and sheath down with neatsfoot oil from time to time and they will last forever. Personally I prefer the Kydex sheath over the leather. KA-BAR offers the stackable leather handle washers on there site but, I still haven't figured out how to remove the pin from the pommel...

I have the model 1245 8" tanto, and I love it. Not fond of the plastic sheath it came with, nor of the kraton handle (it collects a lot of skin cells and dust), but the knife itself is just absolutely bad ass. I wouldn't use the 1245 for utility work though. This is purely a fighting/self-defense-oriented knife. The 1217 would be a much more appropriate general purpose knife.

@@MKlukowski No, I haven't, I Sold them. Ka-Bar's are very expensive, here in Germany, I wouln't baton with them. But I'm an educated Blacksmith, and because of the construction of the rat tail tang, and the 90 degree angles, they have a sensitive spot. If they brake or bend, they do it behind the guard. Today's Ka-Bar's looks like, they only harden the blade, not the tang. So they bend very easely. The older models, from WW2, I think, they had hardened the tang , too.

Nice blade, i am glad the sheath is made in Mexico and not Commie China. One thing i never understood about this knife though... Why didn't they include the option of mounting it as a bayonet? Anybody know?
@Athonite4 жыл бұрын
Educated guess: they probably don't want complaints about AR-15 fitment. A military M4 has carbine length gas and 14.5" barrel so a bayonet will work. Most civilian ARs have carbine length gas and 16" barrel, you would need midlength gas system + 16" barrel for a bayonet to fit.

Semper Fi. My problem is that it is not full tang.
@frakismaximus30524 жыл бұрын
Jericho thx for the input. I should have been more specific though - i meant in 1942, when the knife was first issued. It just seems like it would have been desirable for men fighting in the Pacific Theatre to have the option for bayonet mounting but this knife apparently never had that feature.
@TheModernSurvivalist4 жыл бұрын
It was intended for fighting and for utility use, not as a bayonet. For that they had the M1905 and shortened M1 version. The Kabar was inteded as a cheap general purpose knife, low cost, little metal used. Having bayoent fittings would have changed that.

I’m a retired US Army Infantry NCO and I have to agree with you, I’ve seen proof that some popular knives here in the US just can’t hold up to European/Japanese knives. Like you, I steer clear of the crappy ones and acquire only the best. I picked up a Ka-Bar a couple days ago at a pawn shop for $48 USD and it was made in the mid 90’s and was some special or short production run of the knife as it was designed and produced during WWII, even the parkerized finish and blind pinned pommel. Mine looks like it was never used and zero scratches, I couldn’t believe my luck. Heat treating and wrong steel type is often the issue with some knife builders and some care less if it falls apart.
