Hey DCA, love your segments. As to a knife/prybar combination, I have used a Kershaw 1945 Barge in this role. Blade length is 2.6 and the butt-end constitutes a prybar.

Hi really enjoy the mellow vibe on your show and the knowledge you bring each week. My EDC is a 30 year old Gerber (I think they call it a Gator these days.) And a Cold Steel Grik w AUS 8a blade steel which I love. I am looking for a left hand friendly folder 3 to 3 1/4” more or less that might replace these both that I carry every day and these are my priorities in order: Easy sharpening/honing Not easy to break Back lock or equivalently strong Ergonomically well thought out Clean design (interpret this as you see fit) A pleasing appearance USA or Italian Not a priority: Edge hold (I hone my knives every night.) Lightness, trimness Price I use my knives hard every day ina nearly infinite variety of tasks. I don’t “fidget” with them. I work for a park service and I also guide. I don’t think I’ve ever spent more than $50 on a knife and even found my good little fixed blade out in the woods. But I would spend what it takes for the right knife even a bespoke knife if it’s really strong. A few options would be nice TYIA!

DCA I think I have a question you have not addressed. Long time fan from the Dominican Republic. Living on an island, it’s safe to say I do many swimming activities. Fresh and Salt water. I swim, surf, jacuzzi, ice bath, sauna, pool party and triathlon ALWAYS with a pocket knife. Yes I have several Spyderco Salt and XHP blades. But wonder what else is out there. Usually carry two type of blades. 1) 3” to 4” 2) 2” Depends on where and when the activity will be. Sometimes some casual setting. Sometime some more hard use setting. Needs: Good Dependable Nice looking A little easier to sharpen And the larger blades a little easier to clean and maintain. Thanks before hand. Have a good one. Keep up the good work. Beers on me if you ever make it down here. Maybe Punta Cana. Muchas Gracias hermano.

Hey DCA and Thomas. I just got a new office job, and want to celebrate with a new knife, which I will also edc at the office. I'm looking for a capable, but gentlemanly looking folding knife, that preferably has a leather belt sheath or pocket sheath for more gentleman-ness. Blade length at or under 3.5 inches, and locking (no slipjoints please). Price between $250-$500 sounds good.

Hey David, I've often heard you say AEB-L and 14C28N are your #1 & #2 favorite non-particle steels. I take it a bit further: AEB-L is my favorite steel, period. I know I'm losing some edge retention, but according to Dr. Larrin Thomas (who, I swear looks like he's 14 years old) in addition to stainlessness, I'm getting a steel with basically the same toughness of CPM-3V. I find myself wondering if the latest micro-melt / powder metallurgy would be able to add anything were AEB-L to be made with that process. Keep up the great content, and keep Thomas in front of the camera occasionally, he's great as well.

I’m looking at a similar issue as a teacher, my previous school was small and I taught outdoor Ed and even taught carving and knife skills. The students frequently brought their pencils to me to sharpen with my pocket knife. But now I’m going to a more typical school where a knife would likely be viewed as a weapon. Been thinking about a TPT slide or the little Leatherman style with the scissors.

Hey DCA, Thomas and firends, love your work. Here's my questions, the first one I hope is reasonably easy to answer - the second one is a unicorn hunt I have been on for a few decades. 1) Civivi Damascus vs Civivi Nitro-V I like the look of Damascus but I can't justify high end Damasus am I leaving anythning on the table in terms of performance if I choose Civivi's damascus over Civivi's Nitro-V. I'm not worried about corrossion resistance only toughness, edge retention, sharpen-ability - if I understand correctly Civivi's damascus may well be stainless steels anyway, but even if not I'm happy to perform maintenance on my knives and I have food safe corrosion film. 2) Fixed blade "surivival" knife: Can you recommend a fixed blade spearpoint or harpoon "surivival" knife (i.e. an all rounder field knife) that can do light chopping e.g. 2" saplings for shelter construction -as well as normal cutting - i.e. cordage, butchering, food prep, whittling for a trap etc. I'm thinking 5-8" blade length, full tang. Doesn't need to be a prybar witrh an egde - I guess I prefer as slim as practical. I don't want a paracord wrap handle. A lanyard hole is a must and preferable one that can take paracord diameter. The ability to use a variety of grips is valued. Re the steel: I value toughness and being able to maintain and if necessary re-sharpen the edge in the field over absolute top drawer edge retention, but I would like to be able to get a very sharp edge. Apple seed edge is OK. I'm not fussed about having Rambo knife type features, like hollow handles or saw teeth but their presence doesn't preclude a knife that otherwise works . Although if you can supply a one piece Chris Reeves in my price range I'll take it :-) Been hankering for one of those beauties since the 80s. Price range up to $300 - maybe a smidge over. Does not need to include the sheath in the price. TBH I might even exceed that price range if the perfect candidate was identified.

@Dynotop1a
@Dynotop1a 11 ай бұрын
Spyderco’s Caribbean, Lil Temperance 3 Lightweight, Watu, Canis, Yojimbo/Yojumbo, Sliverax, P’KAL, and a few of their upcoming releases. All of these knives truly have no choil, either for sharpening or the finger. If you will always use a dedicated finger choil of a knife and are more concerned about sharpening choils, then most Compression Lock or Caged Ball Bearing Lock Spydercos (like the Paramilitary 2) will be sufficient. Their Autonomy automatics are button operated, so I would technically consider them “finger safe” as well, since it is not necessary to place your fingers in the edge’s cutting path. I am recommending Spyderco’s because you are generally safe from sharpening choils with them.

I'm a teacher. I would check your state and district laws. Here in California it is illegal to carry a knife in a school that is over 2.5 inches and locking. There's also exceptions for food prep and legitimate work uses. I carry a victorinox cadet alox with a hanging pocket clip. I teach a subject with a lot of equipment, and I often use the cadet screw driver to fix equipment and the knife to open packages and open/ break down packages

David, serious question (that perhaps you've addressed previously lol), what're some good options for larger (yes, subjective), but EDCable, fixed blades? Preferably with the included sheathe, but I suppose a look at aftermarket sheaths and things like the ulticlip or Tek-Lok that help make a knife work for EDC is also a good angle to investigate.

Hi DCA. On this topic i want to know why there isn't a prybar for me. I hate prybars with a bottle opener. It's an unnecessary and annoying feature. Snags on your pants, can be uncomfortable on your hand in certain grips, I almost never need to open a bottle, and if I do a prybar is already a bottle opener anyway. And the big issue is that any prybar I have found with no bottle opener has almost no other functionality. If I could have one of a similar style to the Otacle 2. Hex wrenches in the middle, a bit driver (ideally with a Philips head on board) and no damn bottle opener I would be so happy.

I am a big fan of my Bark River JX6 II Magnacut (wish I could find a JX4 Bush Bat sonewhere...) With the sweep/belly similar to the Ulu you displayed @ 17:15. It does bushcraft like a champ to me (but feel like the scandi grind on the jx4 would outmatch the saber grind of the jx6). Also, looks gorgeous and captivating as well. It performs in all I have done with it and I am sure the skinning functionality would be great. Besides what I am interested in (LT Wright Large Northern Hunter), The Condor Black Leaf, and various Chris Tanner (@Preparedmind101) JX blades made; what other various blades resemble the Ulu knife on a handle? This had me thinking more about the newer steels, like Magnacut and S35VN …. Do certain steels fit better with certain blade types and grinds? question please... i would like to inquire as to ur recomendation for a good affordable (100-ish dollar range) 3 to 3 & a quarter inch bladed pocket knife ...preferably over 3 or over, but under 3.5" ...& id like it with a flipper tab riding on bearings (maybe a button lock?) & very grippy g10 scales... & it needs to have a left-carry pocket clip & quite frankly im open to suggestions & fairly flexible on most of these options, but it must be said, i am however quite sick of seeing "black" &/or grey coated knife blades... & honestly, im not real crazy about micarta (i have a sencut finch thats just to smooth & slipery) unless it has extremely aggressive traction (i have a gerber auto with amazingly aggressive traction so u can not get to "grippy for me) & i would prefer a stainless blade steel of some sort since i live in the "rust belt" of the southern states... & to give u an idea of one of my favorites, my go-to at the moment is my zt350 with a stonewash blade & g10 scales... thank u fellas & god bless

Hello DCA and Thomas! Question! I’m looking to buy a small pocket knife for my mother, I want the best, even if it’s a custom LOL! Under 2.5”, with a flipper, and hopefully it’s something cutesy! (Her favorite is her kershaw chive) What is your best recommendation? Thanks!

Hey! found this channel a few months ago and been loving the content. Great stuff to put on in the background while I work! My question is inquiring about "Sheffield steel" - or whatever the actual type of steel it is. I've used my family's nearly 60 year old Nowill and sons bowie for all sorts of tasks over the last 2 years, and barely had to do any maintenance. What i'm curious about is what "Sheffield" steel actually means. I've been researching for months and come up with nothing. Is there an actual name for it? or is it just a term for knives made in the Sheffield area? Thanks in advance, and for reading this long winded message!

Sheffield steel is not an actual grade of steel, but is just a knife made in the Sheffield area of the UK, once a mighty cutlery capital of the world, but less so today in the modern era. Lots of great stuff made there throughout the years though, but hard to say what your Bowie is actually made of without any other markings to go from -DCA

"Never pry with a pocket knife." - My Granpa (no 'd', it's a family thing.) Now, on the LynchNW All Access Pass above the cap lifter there is an opening . . . is that opening an oxygen tank wrench or would it work for one? Thanks DCA and Thomas, great work as always!

I don't believe it will work as an O2 wrench. They don't advertise that as a feature at the very least -DCA

Hello DCA, love your videos. I kept hearing how great Magnacut steel is but at he same time, 14c28n is comparable to it, what is your take on 14c28n?

I carry a fountain pen and a flashlight -- tempted by the arkfeld though. Prybar stands no chance though. Unless it's a BK2. Knife snapping guy should get a Hultafors Chisel knife. They're about £8 and made for chiselling.

Hello gentlemen. Why don't we see more hard rubber scales or grips on knives? I love how grippy they are even without any added texturing. G-10 is my second favorite.

Lately I have been changing the finishes on my knives. I took a Benchmade and put light vertical grind lines on the hallow part and strong horizontal on the top section (710). Also mirror polished a blade. Any recommendations on polishing compounds or sandpaper progressions? Another though is it's easy to make a reverse tonto or sheepsfoot on a belt sander...I've done both

I'm looking for a pen that can go right next my pocket knife, which is typically clipped into my jean pocket. It should be close to full length and won't accidentally deploy. This pen needs a sturdy clip. I beg the question, what would you suggest?

I'd like to see you do an episode based on the best knife for a movie character...Guardians of the Galaxy for example, i.e. Peter Quill needs a Marfione Star Lord, Rocket needs a Vosteed Raccoon, Gamora needs a Kizer Cyber knife, etc. etc. You could milk that premise for months...
