This past year I canoed the BWCA for 8 days and took the Victorinox SwissChamp with me. I had many choices of knives and multitools to take but the SwissChamp had all of the tools I needed for this trip. The large knife filleted fish, the fish scaler scaled, the scissors cut braided and mono fish line, the sewing awl and pliers repaired leather shoes, the mag glass and tweezers removed a tick, the saw helped to prep kindling, the package hook lifted a teapot off the fire, the corkscrew loosened a stubborn knot. Need I say more?

I have carried a SAK for 60+ years, Scouts, Vietnam and in the plumbing trade. Great, handy tool. Just recently I have given away 20+ Classic SAK, mostly to women friends. Consistently have received positive feedback from them; scissors always handy and they we amazed at how useful they were used. Do I also carry a second ( third?) folder? Yes.

I own 35 Victorinox Swiss Army knives and I love them all. I love their versatility, the high quality for a very affordable price, and the variety of materials and tools depending on the multitool. My favorites are the Alox's (Farmer X, Pioneer X and Cadets), the Rambler, the Climber (in white), the Compact (in blue), the Sportsman, and my Outrider. I often carry my Cadet and Climber in my bag, and my Rambler around my neck. I own many fixed and folding knives, and my Victorinox's are among my favorites. And I've never seen an Alox Rambler! I'd love one of those.

I love my Swiss Army knives. I have somewhere around 10 of them. They’re small, light (unobtrusive) and most average knife carriers don’t need anything with a super steel that they can’t replace if they lose or break it. Are they ideal for cutting cardboard 40 hours a week? No. But in a pinch they’re great to have if you pick the right one for you, and if someone around you wants a knife to borrow, they’re perfect for that too. People who need to borrow a knife don’t need to know about every blade i’m carrying.

The compression lock could be viewed as mechanically equivalent to the Tri-Ad lock, just using the liner rather than a rocker bar as the handle's moving element. 'Tri-Liner lock' and 'Liner-Ad lock' are options. Others: 'Top Liner lock', 'Side Liner lock', 'Squeeze lock'. My favorite, as it reflects both how the liner tongue fits between tang ramp and stop pin, and how its disengaged: 'Pinch lock'.

Hey DCA, Thomas & Seth. Really love the work you do. I'm here today to take a crack at giving the compression lock a generic name. My understanding is; a compression lock is nothing but a top mounted/reverse liner lock with a stop pin or "wedge" attached to it. When the knife is open, the stop pin/wedge keeps the knife open & the blade secured in place. So, if people starts calling it a "Wedge Lock" instead of a compression lock, I don't think anybody would have anything to complain about. What do you think?

Victorinox rules b/c it's the perfect combination of non-threatening and utility. I use my Compact daily. Even the parcel hook gets used to put the bikechain back on. I have more expensive knives. But i don't carry them a lot; in my daily life as a teacher and a father they wouldn't get used as much as the Vic tools.

While I'm at it, PLEASE bring back the 74mm Executive with the Pen Blade, Small Blade, Scissors, Nail Filer, and Orange Peeler. Victorinox is the brand that is the go-to knife brand for a ton of people because it is the household name everybody knows. They're very widely available in retail and are the only knife brand most people will see and recognize growing up at one point or another. As such it has become the go-to brand for people who, for whatever reason, purchase a knife but don't possess any significant knowledge of knives and what makes them work. Sure the knives produced by Victorinox are of adequate built quality and are affordable but that is where their practical qualities end when compared to competition. The steel Victorinox uses in all of its products is of relatively low quality and heat-treated to be quite soft. The plastic and rubber used as scales in the majority of Victorinox's line-up are fragile and cannot be removed for cleaning or replacement by the consumer. The spring-action used in both the slip-joint and independent spring tools such as pliers or scissors isn't very strong nor are the springs durable enough for long-term frequent use. I believe Victorinox has become a victim of its success when it comes to the quality of its products, having become complacent with innovating with its products because they don't have to. Whilst other manufacturers have improved and innovated both with new materials and functions, Victorinox has sat idle. On the current knife market, Victorinox survives and thrives off brand recognition and the unwarranted brand loyalty of its consumers. I've personally carried a Ruike-LD51B as a multitool for about three years now and it outperforms an SAK in almost every way despite the product being based on that of Victorinox. Ruike has had to make a name for itself not through brand loyalty or lack of competition but through innovation and the quality of its products. The result is a line of products that, in terms of materials and practicality, puts Victorinox to shame.

Hi DCA, Seth, Thomas, I live in France where we have a restrictive knife law and people arround me tend to be scared about knives (they find a Ladybug or McBee intimidating due to the « tactical look »). I tried a Boker multi tool but they were again scared. So I mainly use SAK such as victorinox or MKM Malga 6. I noticed that whatever looks like a normal size SAK with wood handles tends to be acceptable, such as a Fox Livri. Wood especially seems to reassures them. If possible not locking. Would you have any recommendations for a knife looking like a SAK or Laguiole, with a modern PM steel (Magnacut, S35VN or similar) ? Keep on the great work ! Harry

Victorinox also has a place in my kitchen... the rosewood handled line is high quality and very capable of everyday work. Jack of all trades master of none? Yeah right... Victorinox is not a display case grail knife only used by lames to brag about the materials that they never really use except to cut open their Amazon deliveries and show off to the nerds in the office... Victorinox makes dependable gear that works for real. I have a few good folding knives but I am thinking about buying a good fixed blade now. I’m looking for something versatile, reliable and resistant, with a decent sized blade but without being too bulky. More to the point, considering the zombie apocalypse that is inevitably upon us, which fixed blade you’d recommend as an all-around survival tool, good for bushcraft, hunt, urban use and, naturally, defending oneself from the hordes of the undead? Congratulations on the amazing channel. You are responsible for addicting me in perceiving what should be ordinary cutting tools as collectible works of art.

Hey Thomas, I have an OHO 111mm GAK and the saw has side to side play at the pivot when deployed that wiggles the main blade inside but deployed main blade doesn't have it. Also, The liners don't quite reach the tangs by a mm or two so there's movement there as well. Haven't gotten a lot of feedback when asking about this so idk how common or if it's a case of substandard lots... Some say rock solid, and some say lock rock. I wouldn't expect this from victorinox and haven't experienced this in any other model. Do you see any wiggle on your outrider saw? For all others that came here bc it's a SAK vid with a 111mm, what say you?

I started my knife jearney with a classic sd and now I have a few of them. I have the classic on my car keys and I carry a hunter as a EDC. Yes the hunter does have tools I never use but a real SAK even one with little tools will be a great EDC. Especially when you with people that aren't into knives SAK doesn't intimidate them

Possible question. I find the Case 253 Mini Blackhorn to be ideal for light duty EDC because it is dead simple, disapears in the pocket, has a long slicey blade (especially considering the compact size), and has a serviceable handle shape. Only problem...it feels kind of cheap. Is there a more upscale knife with similar characteristics?

A lot of high priced knives are hard to open and much harder to close. The last is the pits for a folder. People with weak hands are going to end up leaving them open and not use them.

I always have an SD on my keychain. And if I forget to remove it when going to a government building or airport, it is easy and cheap to replace. There are always 2-3 spares in my house.

SAS,'s are made for a world wide audience. Not everyone can have a lock blade. Not everyone can have a blade over 3 inches. A lot of countries put many restrictions on what can be carried. We are fortunate. SAK is a good learning tool.

I’m such a fan of Victoria Nox then I bought one of their watches. It tore up in six months and they were real jerks about repairing it. If you think about it, I’ve not really had that much. Good luck at their knives either.

Bought my first Swiss Army knife while on liberty in Naples Italy 1976. 15 years later one of the handles cracked. I contacted Victorinox, they fixed it for free. Was without it for 2 weeks. So I bought another one. Still have both of them. Carried even why flying until 911 and stupid rules kicked in

Hey guys, I hope DCA is okay. I'm fairly new to the knife world and i don't know that many good value knives or knife brands and was looking for some options. I'm looking for a premium feeling knife around the $100 - $250 mark though if its a bit over that's fine and, due to knife laws in my country, ideally it would have a blade under 4 inches. If you do answer this thank you very much and I love your content.

Regarding the generic Compression Lock name, since the liner has a tab that fits into a notch in the blade, I was thinking something like "tab lock" or "notch lock." Maybe "tab notch lock." Since it's on the top side of the knife, it could also be called a "top notch lock," which it certainly is.
