Another benefit of fixed blades over a folder with the same form; less time/effort spent on retrieval, opening, closing, and replacement. The proper sheath and carry method will allow you to draw a fixed blade, use it, and replace it all without adjusting your grip. It really adds up if you use your knife frequently enough.

I'm glad that lightning round question was asked. I've been stuck on it for years. I would love to carry one of my SAKs, but when I reach for a multitool I always feel naked without a pair of pliers. The downside there is that a Leatherman is bulky and heavy which I am not a fan of. Also redundancy gives me a headache. So having a multitool that has a knife already makes it feel strange to carry another knife. In conclusion. I'm stuck.

One issue even that Henckels pull-through doesn't fix is that the pull-through motion creates a scratch pattern parallel to the edge instead of perpendicular. Even at very fine grits, part of what makes an edge effective and durable is that the scratches create a "toothy" pattern at the edge, although it is often too small to see without magnification. This is also why layered ("Damascus") steel can actually create "sharper" blades. The variation in the steel creates a microscopic serration-like effect. The more and finer the layers, the sharper it can feel.

Between the two brands of multi tools? I would overall go with Daavviidd Leeaatthheerrmmaann! I do have a question as to what is the best knife for wood carving? Within the past 1 1/2 years I use a Morakniv carbon knife specifically sold as a carving knife, and I must say it’s great using that knife. It has about a two inch blade with a scandi grind on a wooden handle with a palm swell that fits quite comfortably in the hand. Prior to getting that knife I used basically a box cutter as my primary wood carving tool, and that actually worked well for me, but I do like the ergonomics of my Morakniv, and while the warncliffe shape of the blade tip from the box cutter worked very well at making precise edges and corners, I am also quite pleased at how well the scandi ground edge on my carving digs into the wood and removes that excess wood, so overall I must say that my Morakniv wood carving knife has been awesome. However, I do wonder if there are better options for a primary wood carving knife?
@bloodgain6 ай бұрын
The best knife for wood carving is a wood carving knife. I swear I'm not being facetious. Knives for woodcarving have evolved to be made for that purpose mostly. They are usually full flat or Scandi ground and made from high carbon tool steel or sometimes with laminated blades, and can often be maintained for a very long time by just stropping frequently. Some carvers like to do everything with a Sloyd knife, because it can do both heavy and detail carving, but it's not ideal for detail work. The Mora 106, 120, and 122 are Sloyd-style woodcarving knives. Some folks use a combination of "whittling" or "bench" knives in different sizes. There are also other tools that get used like round or v-gouges, spoon carving hooks, small palm chisels, etc., especially if you decide to get into more specialized chip carving, spoon making, etc. Flexcut makes pretty much every tool imaginable at a good entry-level quality and price. But there are tons of smaller makers doing custom knives and tools that are a little higher quality. Compared to the knife collector world, even the custom stuff is downright cheap. There are several great woodcarving channels on YT. Check out Carving is Fun, Alec LeCasse, Kevin Coates, and (Doug) Linker for starters.
@kevinx70156 ай бұрын
@@bloodgain That’s the morakniv I have is specifically sold as a wood carving knife. I also use various chisels with various gougages for specific cuts and corners. However, the vast majority of the time I have used for carving wood is done with just one knife. What I liked especially about the morakniv sold as a wood carving knife is a roughly two inch blade with a scandi grind in carbon laminated steel with a handle that has a palm swell. I found that knife is great for wood that uses not really hard. That scandi grind really digs into the wood to cut out material. However, the Morakniv I have is more of a drop point, which is great in many instances but when it comes to specific edges and corners, I prefer to use a blade that is more of a warncliffe, which is where the box cutters worked well for me and they also do pretty good at cutting into harder woods, as long as you have the hand strength to get that blade to cut in deep. So you say that there are specialized wood carving knives that have a warncliff blade shape?
@bloodgain6 ай бұрын
@@kevinx7015 Yes! The whittling or bench knife style is similar to a Wharncliffe-style profile. It's a straight blade with varying degrees of point. A fine point is great for detail carving. The Flexcut sets are a great value for beginners to decide what they like, IMHO. But it sounds like you know what you like, so you should check out the blogs or videos for suggested brands and pick what looks good to you. That said, some folks swear by Helvie, and they do make some pretty knives. I don't have one yet, but plan to. Maybe if I buy one, it'll encourage me to practice more! 😂 I need to get the Mora Sloyd carvers. They discontinued the 122, which had a Wharncliffe-style flat blade. Maybe somebody on Etsy or a carving subreddit would be willing to part with one.
