Microtech double action OTFs (modem ones) springs are always at rest. You create the tension when you push the slider up or down. The resting springs are a selling point actually.

So idk about all otfs, but that microtech is not under tension when its closed or open like you said. Its just simply not true and if you opened it up, you would see how it works. You create the spring tension by sliding up or down the switch. Traditional automatics that open from the side are different, they are under tension and the button releases it. Every otf i own does not have spring tension when it is at rest

Microtech otfs are not under constant spring pressure. The pressure is built by your thumb prior to release.

I can comment on the knife laws in MN as I am a life long resident and have looked into this as part of my personal knife journey. MN is one of ten states that do not allow the use of automatics, however, assisted knives like SOG’s AT line or Kershaw’s SpeedSafe are legal. If a button or switch not on the blade is used to deploy the blade, its a no go in MN. Go to a knife store or Cabela’s in MN. Whatever they sell has to be legal. I hope this helps. As a rookie/beginner collector of knives my question has to do with finding the right amount of value vs costs. My assumption is, it's extremely subjective, but I wanted to ask the experts. For example, I have a few very decent knives that offer value to me and all of them are under $50.00. So, would I be as impressed with a $350.00 knife, as impressive as the extra $300.00 is to me? Which amazes me, for I'm not sure I'll know if a higher-end knife would be worth the extra hundreds of dollars. I mean, WOW! Really? Thanks

That's a good point. Hope the experts can answer you. The most I've ever spent is about 280 or so for some Microtech OTF's and some titanium frame lock folders..the materials and fit-and-finish are what stood out the most mainly the overall essence and feel of the knives are more 'special'. But now with brands like Civivi and others in recent years there are such great knives that could have cost twice the price easily...anyways thanks for the good suggestion and happy new year

Just watched and commented on an Ontario Rat 1 review, that expensive knives do not cut 'x' many times better than a cheaper product, dollar-wise. In this case, the reviewer showed a Chris Reeves knife worth $US450 that in no way cuts 11.25x better than the RAT 1 @ $40. And in fact does absolutely nothing better by that factor. Materials or anything. Stick under $100 to $150 and you'll be laughing at the spoons who spend mega bucks and never use their blades. And even if they do, you aren't at any kind of disadvantage at all.

@@CadillacDriver I would use a Sebenza, Hinderer XM-18, or Strider SNG. Those are relatively expensive, but are meant to be used. Just would want a nice stonewash blade to help mitigate scratches appearing as much as possible I suppose. I have little interest in the fancy custom dressy knives that cost thousands. Totally love and appreciate "mid-tech" knives. So the knives I lust after yeah I would use them. If they end up looking worn and torn over the years I'd just remind myself that they are tools, albeit nice once and this is what they are meant for and that the wear and tear was done with love and appreciation and adds character, making the knife truly my own. Gotta justify it somehow emotionally, I suppose. How about you? I sold my roommate a Microtech, since I had 6 different Ultratechs. He uses it every day at the shop and it's all worn but it looks great in its own way. If you add up just those knives it's close to 2 grand I spent so I could have easily bought a Sebenza for 450 a long time ago! Crazy how knife enthusiasm works sometimes.

Double action OTFs like Microtechs are not at significant tension while at rest. The spring, whether opening or closing, only comes under meaningful tension when the switch is being pushed or pulled. When the tension reaches a point that is sufficient to overcome the resistance in the slide carriage & locks inside the knife, the blade fires either in or out, releasing almost all of the spring tension. It's then ready to go in the opposite direction by putting tension on it again in the new direction. I keep hearing people say they're "under tension" when they're really not, at least not in the way that seems to be implied. If you open most OTFs without first knocking the blade off track t, you'll see that the spring is only under just enough tension to keep it snugged up on either side of the slide assembly. In that sense it's at tension, but not nearly enough to fire the blade alone without priming, not even close. Anyway, thanks for the video & Happy New Year! 😃

Happy New Year, Mr. Andersen! I wholeheartedly endorse your recommendations for a lightweight woodworking knife. I favor going lighter still - Mora Basic - and setting it up for neck carry or clipping it on the waistband. If the gentleman insists on a folder, though, I would recommend an SAK with a saw, rather than a lightweight EDC/tactical folder. The SAK saw will process wood that you might otherwise want to chop, and any carving will be much more comfortable with the SAK's thicker, more neutral handle than with the thin handle of a lightweight EDC folder. The EvoGrip S18 would be my particular choice, as I prefer the secure grip of it over the smooth-handled models like the Huntsman.

@@sheltermonkey6065 there's a model called the Walker, which is really thin. It's just a knife blade, saw, and bottle-opener/flathead, and weighs in at all of 1.6 ounces. Honestly though, it's pretty limited, and I would sooner recommend the Camper, at least, which is only an ounce heavier, but includes a penknife blade, a can opener, small flathead, awl/reamer, and corkscrew. Even better, in my view, is the EvoGrip 18, EvoGrip S18, or the EvoGrip S17. Those are each a little over 3 ounces, but offer a much bigger selection of tools in a pretty compact package. Also, the EvoGrip models are much more secure in hand in the cold and/or wet.

I like the bailout thumb ramp. I didn't however like the bail part on the end of the handle, it dug into the palm of my hand and wasn't comfortable. I've removed the bail and now I enjoy the handle. Also not that anybody but BM can do anything about it, I would love to see different blade shapes, like the sheep's foot with a thumb hole like they have on the Griptilian.

I cut a lot of plastic to hang over windows for construction for Sprayfoam and the plastic is laying on wood or concrete I been using my bugout but it goes dull quick, also tried cold steel tuff lite and hinderer in s45v! The hinderer seems to be holding up better then the 2 but lol get ready, what’s your recommendations or if you can think of anything for my situation? Not worried about price and would like to have control while I’m cutting the plastic?

Hey David! Love your videos. I have a Protech/Ferrum Forge Mordax that I love the ergos on, and a Schwarz Perpetua that has an awesome blade shape. I've been eyeing a Hinderer XM-18 or 24 in a sheepsfoot configuration as that seems to be an almost perfect mashup. One issue though, they're freaking expensive. Do you know of any possible alternatives out there? Sheepsfoot and finger choil at $300 or less is the main goal here. S35VN or higher edge retention as well. Thanks!

A question for DCA. I want to buy a knife for my dog. I would like to attach something like a neck knife to my dogs collar. It would have to be a super secure sheath so it won’t fall out. This way if I ever need a backup blade I just call my dog. Extra points if it has a bottle opener as well.

i’m seriously considering getting a hogue deka. i know a few competitors are the bugout and the pm2 or para3. is there anything else less than $150 around or less than 3.25” and not a flipper that is light weight hopefully less than 4 oz that is also worth considering? also i’d like it to be not a back lock but any other lock is ok but it must have a lock also, i don’t like the feed of grivory so i was wondering how close cf elite feels to it or g10. thanks

I'm considering a Hogue Deka in the near future as well. I have a Bugout and Para 3 Lightweight. Both are great, but I actually like my Benchmade 940-2 a little more. The G10 feels more solid than the Grivory and FRN, but is still under 3 oz. You can also check out the Benchmade Presidio 2. I think the standard Para 3 is also a great choice.

Microtech OTFs are always at rest never under extreme tension. Microtech actually tells us this when u purchase their OTF. The spring is not loaded in either position. That’s the genius technology of it

If you want a tough "garage knife " for cutting things like cardboard, look at Morakniv Craftsmen Carpet/Roofing Felt/ Leather Knife 175P. It's a fixed blade. Under $20.

Mora BB is a poor answer to last question IMHO. I would say esee Junglas 1 or 2. Or perhaps a pocket saw from silky and a pocket knife honestly there are quite a few thin chopping knives out there. I am out every day on different trails near my house walking my dogs and kids. Small trees fall across trails continually in my area and I use a Bark river JX5 to clear and maintain trails.

@@knifecenter Thanks for reply. I feel like the commenter was asking for a light chopper you could run with. I think BRK, ESEE, and Tops all make options that could work with the right sheath. I walk trails most days and like the commenter I come across small trees in the trail after every storm. I personally believe in the right tools for the job, and it's just not practical to beaver chew a tree especially as often as I have trees down in my area.

Hi DCA. Sorry, but I think you really failed in your explanation of assisted-opening. In assisted-opening, the spring (a torsion spring, not a torsion bar as people including Kershaw mistakenly call it), the spring *is* under tension in the closed position. However the force of the spring is acting to keep the blade *shut*. That is the Safe part of SpeedSafe! The blade, under spring tension, has a bias to keep closed.

I learned one time, (not to), deploy an out of the top knife up against an object like a board or probably any other solid object that will stop the blade before full deployment; years ago I ruined my uncle's stelleto by doing that; it threw the spring off. 🙄

Hello D.C.A., I Love the knife AQ series. Been watching every one that comes out. I have a question for you, what would your pick be for knife with the most sex appeal? Folding knife that would make someone that is not into knives stop and say, WOW.. That's a good looking knife.

I'm looking for a pocket knife that satisfy both legal (in Denmark) and personal preference requirements as follows: Legal; - Not automatic or assisted - Blade length (maximum steel protrusion from frame/scales - finger choiles and such count as blade) of maximum 70mm Personal; Since I carry my knife in the bottom of my pocket; - Totally smooth contour when closed. No sharp or jaggered edges (like on the spine end on the Benchmade Bugout and Spiderco Lady bug). - No or removable, not just replaceable, pocket clip (the Spiderco Dragonfly fails this as the bolt holding the clip cannot clamp the scales together without the clip in place, The Civivi Odium fails this as the clip bolt protrude into the blade well when screewed in place with no clip). - A cross bar style lock. - As light weight as possible and last but certainly not least; - Great ergonomics (my favourit, for the size, at the moment is the Fox Baby Core, The Civivi Odium, and the Spiderco Dragonfly). In this category I own and use, but are not fully qualified: Fox Baby Core, Civivi Odium, Böker Urban Trapper Titanium Pettite, Spiderco Lady bug and Dragonfly (both K390), SOG Ultra XR, and Kizer Lieb. Sincerly hope you can come up with a suggestion. Thank you in advance.

I have a question that maybe, just maybe you will be able to answer. Best I can tell the cut off for carrying is pretty much 3.5 inches in the states. Why do all the knives being made seem to be 3 and 5/8s which makes them illegal to carry in your pocket in a ton of places. Why are manufacturers hell bent on getting me arrested? Just make a 3 1/2" blade as the norm rather than the illegal size. Makes ZERO sense.

Don't forget that the swastika that you see is a religious symbol that vastly predates the third reich symbol. I see it also but don't let that bias your choice in knives. Stay safe and have a great New Year.
