A fixed blade in my experience is still the best one hand opening knife.

Agreed and that's what I was thinking. I'd keep a fixed blade with fire strike capability (Mora,Esee) and a folding knife as a back up. As for thinking about it. I'd just carry a ferro rod with a striker. The striker wouldn't weigh anything so even a hiker would carry it if needed

For camping a fixed blade always seems so much easier and more functional, but I also carry a Svord Peasant. For a backup camping knife it is great. Easy to take apart and clean, thin yet tough blade for food prep and utility cutting, you can strike a ferro rod on the spine or tang (again, I'd use a fixed blade over any folding knife here), etc. It isn't a universal tool or knife, but for camping I like it better than the Opinel.

The Cold Steel SR1 out of the box has a crisp spine and can strike a ferro rod. At least the one I have does. I have the s35 clip point model. I know it’s a large folder. Especially compared to the dossier and opinel. It also may not be the best option for food prep due to blade geometry and just sheer thickness. But it can do the job. Just thought I’d mention this option

For one hand opening and a spine so crisp it can cut you try a Cold Steel Code 4. S35vn, too. Very slim, one hand closing, and just a very comfy and somewhat elegant looking knife considering it's inherent toughness and proportions.

Hi David. A rabbit hole question if I may. With folding knives using more 'exotic' blade steels more frequently, this suggests [to me] an ability for "hard(er) use." That un-defined sliding scale no one can agree upon. That said, why then do knives still implement the same liner, stop pin & locking mechanism materials, eg: 440. Would they not benefit from steels more inline with the blade (M4 for example) for reduced wear in order maintain their initial tolerances over time? Thank you to everyone involved in getting these videos out for us. Appreciate your work ;)

Re: Solingen Randalls - W. D. "Bo" Randall got a famous name from WWII soldiers wanting one of his knives to replace the Ka-bar (or Camillus) fighting knives because the quality of a hand made forged knife was SO MUCH better quality than factory knives at the time. After the war, Randall's fame grew as top outdoors professionals started using his knives, and such famous luminaries as African professional hunter Peter Capstick gave praise to the knives. By the time of Vietnam, special warfare had progressed as well as battle technologies, and many soldiers wanted a heavy duty knife they could depend on more than standard government issue (often from the lowest bidder.) Because Randall Made Knives were hand forged, it took considerable time to produce them, and the demand far out-stripped the production ability of their shop. As a way to produce more knives that would be as close to Randall hand-forged quality, Randall made a deal with manufacturers in Solingen, Germany to produce blades for Randall. A big part of the Solingen Randalls today is that they were only made for a limited time, and a Solingen Randall knife (while likely not quite as high quality as a genuine Orlando made Randall) will often be 15% - 40% higher in value.

@jerrypomroy2375
@jerrypomroy2375 2 жыл бұрын
All micartas come down to finish and material. For finish you’ve got matte and polished & in between. Matte will increase the “tackiness”, while the higher polished, less tacky. For material, you’ve typically got linen (small weave), canvas (medium weave) and burlap (larger weave). You’ve also got materials such as denim which would probably fall somewhere between linen & canvas I would guesstimate. So for example, a polished linen isn’t going to be as tacky in the hand as a matte burlap. But all micarta will get grippier when wet. My understanding is that has to do with a combination of the material fibers swelling (much like wood) & resin itself used to fuse the layers of material just becoming tackier when wet. My 2 cents. Not an expert. So take it as you will. But hope that helps.

Question for FAQ #63 - Happy Holidays, DCA! What folding knife would you recommend for using at a fine steak house? I guess this would fall under the "gentleman's" EDC category. Price can range from $100-$200 to ensure good steel with solid edge retention. I ask because I recently had a nice meal for Thanksgiving and the knives they supplied our party with were just not all that impressive when it came to their one and only job - slicing through the tender meat we ordered. Thanks for all the content!

Love how people are already demanding more Magnacut. Everyone also needs to understand that Crucible, the producer, has also just released their iteration of their knife steels in S45VN. So the fact that a new steel designed outside their company has come out and really taken the knife enthusiast by storm doesn't mean they wont be pushing their own internally designed steel.

Asked this question last kniFAQ & looking for some input from the masses… I’m thinking of getting a couple of the guys at work pocket knives for Xmas. I’ve probed each of them a bit and come up with the following. One likes flipper knives with a hunting/tactical/somewhat burly vibe. One likes knives with a crossbar style lock or keeps the fingers out of the path of the blade. One likes knives with partial serrations and quick one handed deployment. I’d like to stay within the $30-$50 range for each but get them the best bang for my buck. In my research so far I’ve come up with the following (any/all suggestions or thoughts welcomed)… Flipper with somewhat burly vibe… Kershaw Natrix 3.25”, CRKT Pilar? Crossbar/Pivot lock… CRKT BT Fighter, SOG Terminus XR? Quick deploying/partial serrations… CRKT M16, Boker Rescue Knife, possibly even Rat 1or2?

I wear my folder in a sheath but tire of the awkward two handed opening traditionals. What is the closest thing you know of to what I currently carry a "case mini trapper", small and suitable for sheath carry, but is one hand opening, locking, and maintains a traditional aesthetic? It seems I prefer a niche that's never really addressed by manufacturers the small "traditionalish" locking flipper instead they just keep copying each other ie. Case Marilla. I bought a benchmade mini crooked river which vibes well with me but ideally it would be a bit smaller, slimmer.

Have you tried a Pena X-Series Trapper? The top flipping action is unreal

Hi DCA 👋 Im curious, if you close a knife with the CRKT deadbolt hard, does the blade bounce back the same way it does on a compression lock or an axis lock? I would greatly appreciate if you could answer that 😁 So far the only locks i have found that dont do this are the hawk lock with the toggle detent, the SLS and the shark lock (sort of)

You mentioned blade show and I was thinking of going for the first time. Don't think I can go all weekend. What are the difference in days and which day would you recommend going?

For the customer that was looking for a one-handed opening alternative to his Opinel, why not just add a aftermarket thumb stud to it? You can screw one of those on in about five seconds. They work just fine.

I had thought about that but two things made me think twice - for one, there is very little spine that sticks out (so might not even have enough room to mount the stud) and also, the handles are so big and round (in a good way) that it also might interfere with getting your thumb in there. YMMV -DCA

Hi DCA, love what you and team have got going on here. I am really into Spyderco knives. Well until it comes down to the lack of a sharpening choil. I don’t want that to keep me from enjoying the brand. Does a choil change how a blade functions or needs to be maintained? Thanks!

Hello D.C.A., Only the Boket can actually be put into a pants pocket, the other two-shirt pocket only (especially the Sinckair) must be kept away from heat and bending(as w/the Victornox plastic case!)!!! Just say'n! As w/your last post (IG GAW), I'd asked for help as only got a "must be 18+ to view"! IG won't fix it (I'm a Vet., over 18, ya yhink!)!!?? Hope your T-Day was great, no family here! Be safe and take care, "God Bless", sincerely, Randy. 👍👍🙏😇👊

What knife would you suggest as a gift to a person who prefers higher end steels, I know for sure it needs to be above D2. Unfortunately budget is around $100.- We are looking for a folding knife that locks open. Also what are options for ambidextrous autos (budget probably under $300) Thanks - Matt

Hey David, a million thanks for all the great videos you produce. I have a question for you. Is The Knife Center ever going to consider selling your cap in the same color of green or red like the shirts you wear when creating your videos? These are two cool colors and I would love to buy a cap with either of these colors. Please let me know David. Take care and thank you very much. Jimmy.

Hello DCA. Ive been looking for a straight blade such as a traditional warnecliffe, but with a button or cross bar lock. Is there something Im missing for why this is so hard to find? Ultimately, Id like the blade to be lower than the handle. Thanks for everything you do!
