Good to see it becoming more common. While not particularly tough, it has excellent edge retention and just as importantly can take a clean, keen edge. A good steel for those who like a slicey blade that's nice and thin behind the edge. Despite it's hardness it's not that difficult to sharpen - although I thoroughly recommend using diamonds. I have never used CPM D2. What is it similar to? I personally don’t like regular D2
@joshuasharrock46619 күн бұрын
There are three qualities a knife steel can have. Hardness or how long it will stay sharp and how sharp it can get. Toughness or basically how easy is it to sharpen and how much can you bend it or smash it against something hard without it shattering like glass. And stain resistance self-explanatory CPM D2 has more toughness then regularly D2. Roughly around Nitro V but it unfortunately suffers in resistance because you're gaining a strength somewhere else. If I am wrong, Internet please have it at me
@lance19619 күн бұрын
@@joshuasharrock466I don’t believe CPM-D2 suffers from any worse corrosion resistance than regular D2. Sometimes the three categories can be increased without a tradeoff in any of them by increasing another category: cost
@johnj.baranski655318 күн бұрын
Similar to magnacut
@realbroggo18 күн бұрын
Firstly D2 & CPM-D2 are chemically identical or very close to. The physical difference between the two is that D2 is ingot cast while CPM D2 is made using Crucible Industries' powdered metallurgy process (CPM = Crucible Powered Metallurgy). The major problem with D2 is that it has large, hard chromium & vanadium carbides unevenly distributed throughout. In summary these carbides: 1. reduce toughness. 2. reduce stainlessness (much of the chromium is used in carbide formation rather than being free to reduce corrosion). & 3. can make getting a clean keen edge difficult. The use of powdered metallurgy both 1. significantly reduces the size of the carbides in the steel and 2. allows the carbides to be evenly distributed throughout the steel. Powdered metallurgy, however, does not effect corrosion resistance. This means that as a general statement (assuming the steels are ideally heat treated), CPM D2 offers notably improved toughness and edge/sharpening performance over D2. The issue with CPM D2 is usually a value proposition - is the improved performance worth any increased price (compared to D2)? This is always a hard question. While I would take CPM D2 over D2 in a heartbeat, I probably wouldn't pay too much more as there are also many other good steels out there better than both D2 & CPM D2. (FYI - I don't like D2 either. Many many better performing 'budget' steels out there. eg. I will take 14C28N or Nitro V over D2 without even a thought.) Hope this helps.
@jimshort926618 күн бұрын
@Damion… I’ve been led to believe that it’s very comparable to CTS XHP. Cold Steel has used CTS XHP extensively and when they had a hard time sourcing it recently (so I heard) they used S35VN in place of it so I’m assuming it must be relatively comparable.
