This guy is one of the better spoken knife company interviewees I’ve seen at shot show this year. Excited for some new case designs.
@chrisjosekuehl10 күн бұрын
You can tell this guy is actually involved in the company instead of a rep who crammed the night before and doesn’t know crap. Everytime I’ve gone to shit show, you can immediately tell who is a hired rep vs someone who’s involved. Usually the reps are always available because no one wants to talk to them, unless it’s one of the very talented female reps, they are usually swarmed, especially the rep for the bra holsters who demonstrates how it doesn’t come loose even if your bouncing up and down. Every 5 minutes or so a 20ft radius becomes dead quiet around that rep lol. That company is definitely taking advantage of physics and gravity lol. I didn’t know she was going to do it the first time, I was trying to negotiate a purchase at the display next them and mid sentence both I, the rep, and maybe 20 other people just paused, even a few lady’s. They probably sold 500 holsters to dealers who will never sell them lol.

That price point on that sodbuster jr. is a spit in the face to benchmade. USA construction and S35VN with wood handles and it still comes in $120 under a plastic bug out in S30V

It’s nice to see Case updating their steels. My Dad got me a sod buster that was ok. Thing kept dulling after a couple cuts, though. Soft steels aren’t terrible, because they’re tougher. However, knives that can’t retain an edge become dangerous for the users. So seeing them update their steels and trying out things like S35VN is fantastic news.

I know! I’ve been waiting for this too! A fixed blade Sod Buster would be bad ass. There is a Chinese brand called Six leaf that does a 3V fixed blade that kinda looks like a Sod Buster it’s highly reviewed and sold out. But like you I want USA made case version.

I like that first sodbuster junior. Has a nice classic/modern look to it. I like that they're doing the cutout instead of nail nick too because it looks better IMO and is probably a bit more functional if anything.

I have a sod buster junior in my collection that is pretty nice. The thing is you can get a < $15 Chinese knife and it will have half stops, come with better quality control and feel more solid in the hand. Case needs to put some more work into the internals of the sod buster junior and their qc. I've sent a knife back that was new because the blade geometry was horrible and it still didn't come back from them as good as it could have been. I've also just straight up returned one because every single part of it looked like it was from a different knife. Like they were just pre-cut parts and they were very mismatched like a Frankenstein.

Thank God they are making a micarta sodbuster with carbon steel. I've had some custom made. It's nice I can get some from case now. In my opinion the carbon steel is the way to go if your going to be using the knife. Plus I like patina.
@JamesClark-lw6sw10 күн бұрын
NO.
@tomt574510 күн бұрын
agree. carbon is the way to go. soo crisp. and who can say no to a nice micarta? :)
@jmount4113 күн бұрын
@JamesClark-lw6sw Yes, Cases Tru Sharp stainless has terrible edge retention. I've sharpened it using rougher 600 grit edges to the absolute finest mirror polish .25 micron edge. It loses its edge far quicker than their carbon steel. Also don't like shiny blades. I'd rather it wear and patina and have a story to tell. Micarta is nice too and has far better traction than jigged bone. If the knife is getting used its a no brainer at least to me. Your mileage may vary.

More micarta!! Finally! Now if you guys could do a convex grind also, shoot, I’d probably buy a dozen. One of your locking designs, either the new modern traditionals or a Barlow of something, some titanium or steel bolsters or full micarta, maybe a basic version in your carbon and an upgraded version with Magnacut or s35c, 20cv, whatever. Make the knife we all wish Opinel or you guys would make. Boker is close but it’s also like $300 lol.

It continues to baffle me that, with so much interest in traditional knives in recent years and so many amazing patterns at their disposal, Case is just so incredibly tone-deaf and slow-moving in updating their traditional knives. They could've been leading the trends that Chinese and American boutique manufacturers precipitated instead of playing catch-up. And they still have so far to go, given their adherence to the inferior blade steels while others offer D2, 14C28n, Nitro-V, 154CM and others for same or less money. Why not even 440C, which has been around for decades? I think this is a classic case of resting on laurels, getting too comfortable with the status quo.
@stephenbarabas628610 күн бұрын
How's your knife company doing?
@andrewdarowski197510 күн бұрын
I agree. Case are going to struggle in the coming years. The last decade saw cheaper companies making stuff of lower quality, but now, you can get a better knife, with better materials for cheaper than Case. I love the Americana of Case, but they're still using their Tru-sharp, which is basically 440a. It's not good enough for what they want to charge.

I'm still hoping but surely not expecting that one day they'll decide to make properly hollow ground V-42's and also bring back the century old switchblade design. It's some rather cool history to so rigorously ignore.

I'm loving the crossroad XX series but my big turnoff is the opening hole. I get that they have to waterjet their S35VN but I would be all over these if they had a normal nail nick.

Not for nothin’ but I don’t shop Case when I’m looking for “modernity” in a knife. I shop Case when I’m looking for the iconic, vintage patterns that my grandfather and father used to carry. I hope they don’t waste too much time and resources on modern designs.

It’s time case drops their ‘’traditional stainless’’ it’s not good and it never has been. It wouldn’t bother me as bad, if they sold the carbon steel on more models.
@Mike-mi3yw7 күн бұрын
My biggest issue with case is the whole tru sharp and carbon steel nonsense. Like just put an actual steel in it. 1095 or 420HC or something better. Just put an actual steel.
