Everything from 7 min onwords is just... stunning. A YEAR of bladesmithing education in 12 minutes. I paused a dozen times to digest your amazing presentation, which is of course an option we are supposed to take. Either you've not done any actual effort in trying or you are not very good at research and learning. You shouldn't need youtube videos to learn things, that's what children and illiterate adults do. Try opening a book. You could have learned everything here within a few hours on day 1 rather than a year later.

Dr. Thomas (and Ms. Jessica and Owl!), Thanks so much for this video and for all you do for the knife community! I LOVE MAGNACUT - IT'S SO AWESOME! 😎👍 For someone who is a big knife collector and user as well as who grew up watching Mr. Rodgers regularly - this video was so funny, creative, and educational all at the same time to me! Part of what made it so funny was how fast it went from very simple Mr. Rodgers land to "Whoa, hold-up, rewind, getting a bit complicated for me and I didn't catch that" (over and over)! I really appreciate that you take the time and effort to make such videos, maintain your website, and write your book (I plan to buy) so that we can all learn more details about the hobby so many of us out here enjoy! I also like that you included the technical details and tried to present it in a simpler format for us regular folk! I just wanted to say how much I appreciate you and your work and to let you know that: YOU ROCK DR. THOMAS! May God continue to bless your work as a scientist with wisdom, knowledge, and discernment as well as bless your family with peace, love, and provision more than you can even ask or think!

Hi Mister Neighbor! I recently bought your Knife Engineering book and was surprised by your recommendation about tempering 14c28n steel at 61hrc. I can see a steel this hard in a folding knife, but I was wandering if you would recommend the same hardness for a 6 inches long fixed knife that would get some abuse, like batoning and chopping. Thank you and keep the good work!

You mentioned that edge angle causes chipping, but so do manufactured burnt edges when they sharpen on grinders and belts without water being fed over them. Once you sharpen away the burnt edges your edge angle becomes better at resisting chips at that angle. But otherwise your correct 100% if there were no burnt edge. I say this because its very common in the industry and you yourself have written about this.

Thanks for this Larrin! Love the on-purpose lighthearted awkwardness. I appreciate your work, and I started a series myself trying to help novice users understand more of what’s going on under the hood with knife steel (mine being more of a layman’s understanding, but based on looking at lots of research). I greatly anticipate trying out MagnaCut, and made a video myself a few weeks back trying to explain why it’s different from any other Stainless steel to my audience. I want to be free of misinformation, so if you ever stumble across any of my videos which fail to relay trustworthy data, please feel free to comment, correct, and interact. Otherwise I’ll keep looking to your data charts and hopefully discovering more about steel performance!

This video was so informative, thanks for making this KZbin channel. I'm brand new to knife making with only two "whole" one week courses under my belt. I just wanted to buy some flat stock to practice and was immediately overwhelmed by the choices. I have no idea what I'm doing so this helped me a ton. I'll continue to practice with 1084 and 1090 to get better at forging, grinding, and heat treating, but just picked up your book to learn more about metallurgy. It's such a deep ocean of a subject and I know without a guide I'm going to get lost. The breakdowns I've seen on some metal stock websites make just a little more sense to me now. Well done. Now, as a video production and animation professional with over 20 years of experience I have to say DON'T CHANGE A THING! Super entertaining, quirky in a good way, and fun to watch. My only critique would be Mr Own needs a microphone to not have so much room reverb. I LOVED that your wife read your script to the owl. She's such a good sport
