Either you've not done any actual effort in trying or you are not very good at research and learning. You shouldn't need youtube videos to learn things, that's what children and illiterate adults do. After watching and internalizing the whole 17-minute video, my main takeaway from it is that “knife steel snobbery” is half-baked. Steel snobs only ever judge a knife steel as superior based only in one key criteria: edge retention. I like CTS-XHP. Very well balanced. But there is always some idiot out there who will say it is trash because it doesn’t have as high an edge retention as the S110v.
@StoneHands252 жыл бұрын
Xhp is my favorite steel!
@scottmaslowe89162 жыл бұрын
I've always felt the same, that CTS-XHP's balance made it my steel of choice when procuring knives. So I guess what's cool about Magna is it appears to be a linear improvement in that exact direction. Awesome.

Absolutely agree. The only time I get snobbish is when Gerber or Kershaw tries to sell me a 7cr knife for $50.

Dr. Thomas (and Ms. Jessica and Owl!), Thanks so much for this video and for all you do for the knife community! I LOVE MAGNACUT - IT'S SO AWESOME! 😎👍 For someone who is a big knife collector and user as well as who grew up watching Mr. Rodgers regularly - this video was so funny, creative, and educational all at the same time to me! Part of what made it so funny was how fast it went from very simple Mr. Rodgers land to "Whoa, hold-up, rewind, getting a bit complicated for me and I didn't catch that" (over and over)! I really appreciate that you take the time and effort to make such videos, maintain your website, and write your book (I plan to buy) so that we can all learn more details about the hobby so many of us out here enjoy! I also like that you included the technical details and tried to present it in a simpler format for us regular folk! I just wanted to say how much I appreciate you and your work and to let you know that: YOU ROCK DR. THOMAS! May God continue to bless your work as a scientist with wisdom, knowledge, and discernment as well as bless your family with peace, love, and provision more than you can even ask or think!

I personally don't believe ratings because Production knives have variety of heat treatments. What most don't realize is when a steel is advertised as being capable of this and that. They only preform that good if heat treatment is right. Production knives are made in large amounts. So heat treatment is a wide variety. Benchmade got caught with 4v but left it so soft it was no better then budget steel. Then they used the famous lie. "We left it soft so it's easier to sharpen". Or so it's tougher. I really wonder how magna cut will do when it's heat treated in large batches.

You mentioned that edge angle causes chipping, but so do manufactured burnt edges when they sharpen on grinders and belts without water being fed over them. Once you sharpen away the burnt edges your edge angle becomes better at resisting chips at that angle. But otherwise your correct 100% if there were no burnt edge. I say this because its very common in the industry and you yourself have written about this.

loved the mister rogers feel of the video. learned some stuff too. so that's the edge retention testing rig. makes me wonder if direction of the polish of steels effects their crosion risitence. which sounds a bit silly however you get a better looking polsh going tip to tang over spine to edge the latter of which you get with factories knifes well the former being involved in hand made kinfes that have a hand polish. Note: you can forge air hardening and stainless steels, however you have to maintain your heat more then simple steels because once you let them get to cold they will snap. i have about 7 forged AEB-L knifes to prove it. however heat treating them is the hard part i keep meaning to send them out.

@@KnifeSteelNerds (latched on to the conversation) I do not know if other smiths realize stainless is still what 80% iron(i do not feel like looking up stanless compositions right now). the dificalty with it is you have to do a lot more old style hot work over modern machining and work it hotter. Your Father has my respect as my respect that is not easy to do with simple propane forges like your atlus.(i used one for 3 years before i upgraded to their grahm forge). i have yet to try it again with a coal/charcoal forge as i dismantled mine after getting the atlus and have not built a new one yet.
