because he wanted to keep the rpms up high so he didn't lose momentum and it helps free spin the back wheels because shifting down into 1st the transmission will stay in 1st no matter what and he upshift going through the trucks so the car could pick up speed

projectomni to gain and to maintain his speed and to spin the rear end of the car by passing friction to slip the wheel for faster maneuver than running on a conrner at the normal speed. Thats why everytime he makes his corner he's using lo gear and applying more gas to the pedal to make the wheel slip causing a less friction for faster swing of the rear end of the car, now thats drifting...

I preferred Pontiac firebird trans AM, as a drift Car, than the Bugatti Chiron, & pagani Zonda, only for circuit, & drag race car, & not for drift car, just like Pontiac firebird trans AM, that's all;-)
