I have an actual criticism of Princess Peach. She did not get to be as much of a goober as every other character. Not as many funny bits as all the male characters got to have. Too much of a straight man, which is a role that girls are often forced into in comedy stories so that boys can be funny.

"Mario nails it because of his natural ability"? I want to remind people that if a woman had a "natural ability" to do something really well, she'd probably be called a Mary Sue by them. Peach was living in the Mushroom Kingdom for years and Mario was new there, of course she had more experience. The whole point of her is that she is Mario's guide and the adventure is one where both have to watch each other backs and defeat Bowser and there is nothing wrong with that.
@zericle1
@zericle1 Жыл бұрын
Exactly, and it's shown that Mario has to learn a lot to get used to the new world he's in. What's ironic too is that in the final confrontation in the movie, Mario and Luigi are the ones who take down Bowser and Peach literally says that they're heroes. They literally save Peach from Bowser. But Mario wouldn't have gotten to where he did without Peach. In my opinion, watching the movie I felt like the obvious main character was Mario, and Peach seemed like a major supporting character, so I don't get why some people were so pissed off. Like, Mario is still the main character and nothing's really changed that much aside from Peach getting more characterization, which I believe is a good thing.

I feel like men like Shad don't understand why a lot of young girls want to be princesses. It's not because they want to be helpless and stuck in a tower. It's more about being rich enough to afford all these nice clothes and having a certain amount of authority and power. Even the being saved element has a bit this in it because a princess is important enough to be defended against harm more than a peasant woman. It is a feminine appropriate power fantasy in a world were other power fantasies for girls are looked down on and not allowed. Young girls do not want to be princesses solely to be the helpless damsel to make boys feel like heroes. They want to be princesses because they want to be rich and important. The pretty dresses are part of the being rich part. Edit: I noticed I typed out feminism because of auto correct when I meant feminine. It is fixed now.

Yep he/them cannot see the perspective differing from their own, the female side of the knight and princess dynamic. They confuse their perspective for hers, thinking her desire begins and ends at the saving, when for women it extends into the "being valued" just as the knight side isn't about the slaying of the dragon, it's REALLY about the glory and admiration/value afterwards. In both ways, they are stopping their analysis early and confusing the act for the accomplishment. (Which I theorize means they are still "questing" for the act, and have not lived the glory of accomplishment. Kind of sad but also not really their fault that their conservative culture set them up to seek a value that is so outdated, opportunities to enact that value are incredibly rare. Plus the patriarchal society assumptions that only certain, "worthy" men get to DO the act, and therefore the act itself is rarified as is the reward they all worship. It's literally the opposite of an egalitarian worldview, trying to withhold and throttle universal happiness + peace to dole it out only for "good boy" behaviour. These men (and women) are starved then thrown a scrap and told it's a feast, and they have to thank their abusers for the privilege. Extremely disheartening that they haven't realized they are being abused and instead dream of being the abuser. This is what we get when we worship the heros journey and totally disregard the following arcs of the king and mage, not to mention freezing women in the flat Maiden arc forever.

Shad on someone else's live stream - why people invite him on is anyone's guess, he brings nothing and talks over people, I guess maybe it is the 'funny accent'... go figure - was talking about the quality of some of the movies only 10 years ago compared to today. Or something. He claimed he often would let his three year old watch dvd/BluRays to keep him occupied and his son now starts picking out the Nolan Batman movies by preference. Okay: One - You babysit your three year old son by getting him to watch movies? Two - You are leaving your three year old son with a movie that is rated as M (Mature) in Australia? Mature is the highest rating before you get into legal restrictions. What they are saying is "We can't stop you from letting a minor watch this, but we REALLY don't think you should let them." Now Shad, cause Shad knows best, laughs it up as "Look at my son, three years old and already a Batman fan!" while I hear this same story and think "Wait, you are self employed and work from home and you are NOT SPENDING TIME WITH YOUR SON?! What sort of can't are you?" Shad is... different...

@samkeiser9776
@samkeiser9776 Жыл бұрын
I’m of the opinion that “Mary Sue’s” aren’t a character trope as much as they are an effect that a story has when one character is transparently the only character that matters. Like in “Into the Spiderverse” the alternate spider-mans are all incredibly competent, badasses who likely could destroy the collider on their own, like peter A was going to before Miles came into the picture, yet that’s fine actually, because the story is fleshed out. Characters existing and being competent with no explanation isn’t a flaw in story telling, it’d be worse if the spiderverse spider-mans all had to show arcs of themselves growing into their own roles to justify their competence when it’d just re-tread a lot of what Miles was currently going through. These “woke media” right winger bros are just mad that a woman is the competent one and that Mario has to go through an arc (I assume, I’ve never seen the mario movie.) So like, yeah, Princess Peach can just be competent and that’s not a flaw at all as long as the movie is still competent.

@@samkeiser9776 I think Mary Sues are more of a failure to be both interesting and believable, primarily as a consequence of a failed attempt to be more interesting. They're failed power fantasies fail to have any appeal. Can't have interest without stakes or real conflict, can't be emotionally believable when there's nothing to hold onto in terms of character flaws or growth. Normally a writer can get away with failing one or the other of the qualities in a character or story, but failing both makes a synergy of unenjoyable. Take religious or mythological figures, for interest. Typically they aren't believable in the least, and sometimes the universe does revolve around them. But they're interesting in their context of myth, legend and faith, along with cultural and moral interpretation. So It not that a character can't be impossibly powerful or unbelievably important, it's that they have to have a very strong basis for being interesting despite these qualities to work as a character.
@pappanalab
@pappanalab Жыл бұрын
@@samkeiser9776 I think you’re thinking of flat arc characters. Flat arc can be used to great effect like Princess Peach. @samkeiser9776
@samkeiser9776 Жыл бұрын
@@pappanalab yeah, but my point is really that “mary sue’s” aren’t a character trope, because a character can have all the stereotypical qualities of a “mary sue.” (Extremely powerful, really important, well liked, significant lineage, other quirks etc.) and still not ruin a story. Some definitions of the mary sue trope have to do with the superficial qualities of the character themselves, rather than how they’re just, in poorly written stories. And when you define mary sues like that, it’s not actually helpful to anyone because it doesn’t really mean anything.

I think a lot of those were just regular insults. I don't think them being pointed jokes makes them less of an insult. If it's intended to "trigger" shad, which I agree it is, that makes it an insult. See 37:55 "like I'm obligated to be respectful of someone". I don't think he feels obligated to be respectful towards shad. Comparing their character feels a little like it's missing the point. The point is shad doesn't have an argument, his use of disrespect over serious arguments is just evidence of that. Jack's disrespect in return serves the same catharsis for his audience (us) as shad's disrespect does for shad's audience. I don't think there's any need to get up on a high horse about Jack's character. I can appreciate the superiority of Jack's argument while acknowledging a parity in creative shit flinging.

I cannot get over the idea of people being upset that the Mario movie featured power-ups. It's, like, the most iconic part of the games. The thing that people know about Mario is that he eats mushrooms and gets more powerful, or that he grabs a star and then he's invincible for a little bit. Like, I don't know what game they thought they were playing, but every Mario game has power-ups
@awandererfromys1680

Also, the film was basically structured like a video game playthrough. Mario fails over and over again because that's the player experience. Games are no fun if you can speedrun them on your first try. And Peach being perfect is because she's literally the tutorial. All that perfection still didn't help her after that. It's Mario who comes to the rescue. Smart writing, fun worldbuilding, internal consistency, and it just goes _whooosh_ right over their heads.

Every single "traditional" hero uses powerups. You know, the trials and tribulations they go through?? Luke goes through training! And he receives a lightsaber! Freaking karate kid goes through training, wax on wax off! And then he gets stronger and wins! ALL marvel heroes go through powerups, bitten by a spider, or building a nano suit with a nuclear reactor in the chest, or getting an axe instead of a hammer - this argument makes no sense! The Traditional Hero Journey is when a single guy goes out into the wild and Learns A Lot Of Stuff! With all these mental gymnastics you'd think he'd be a ninja by now, let alone knight lmao

Women being subservient is more important to them because it takes effort to achieve the "classic male hero" masculinity, i.e. improving yourself through hard work, determination, kindness and the ability to accept failure; it is way easier to blame women for being "too strong" or "a girl-boss" than asking yourself why you failed to be the hero you dreamt of in childhood.

Since Peach’s inception, she has been portrayed as both a damsel in distress and a capable heroine. She’s alway been sweet, but tough. Her femininity rivals her strength. The first damsel wasn’t even Peach, it was the beautiful lady Pauline. Quite frankly, Peach’s portrayal in the Mario Movie aligns well the games (both mainline and spinoffs), comics, two cartoons, and the old anime film. Anyone who looks at the Mario Movie and thinks “ew, Peach looks like a ‘woke girlboss’ trope instead of a pathetic princess” doesn’t understand who Peach is, and has always been, as a character. Also, yeah, the “girlboss” trope can sometimes suck and isn’t always good/positive female representation, but it’s not inherently bad/negative either. It’s all about the execution.

I noticed this particular tic that Shad has of ending the sentence on 'okay' and 'alright' and 'you know' whenever he does an alt-right take. I've usually seen it - and on occasion have done it myself - whenever a person makes a contentious point based on how they feel but don't have the facts or data to push back against the counters that they know are coming. In such instances, the 'okays' and 'alrights' and 'you knows' and 'I thinks' and 'I feels' are more than just linguistic fillers. They serve as unstated beseechments to the audience to accept the arguments being put forth at face value, as well as a subconscious assurance to self. You see similar linguistic patterns with other alt-right media personalities such as Ben Shabubu and Jordan Baronet Pwederson, especially in their older videos. These fillers become less prominent as a person becomes more convinced that their arguments/opinions are correct and, therefore, are both less reliant on the audience's agreement with what they say and less in need to assure themselves that they are, in fact, right. Or maybe that's just the way he talks, I don't know. I haven't watched his videos but the way he speaks - and the little wiggle he did when he said biologically male and female people "are quite literally meant to go together" - does give the impression that he is not himself convinced that the arguments he's making are 'correct' but is too emotionally attached to his assumptions to change his opinions. Thank you for coming to my linguistic psychoanalysis 101 lecture. I shall wait on Munecat to debunk me and my entire linguosphere.

What bothers me about Shad as a person (not just in his history content) is that he will have a surface level take on a topic and then act like he’s an expert who has carte Blanche to dictate what’s correct and what isn’t to people who are far better read and vetted on the topic. It’s ok to be uninformed; but it’s dangerous to be CONFIDENTLY uninformed

@@simoneidson21 facts- Shad went off the utter deep end and by no means are Kings and Generals and Metatron similar in that respect. However; Kings and generals is VERY surface level history; it’s meant to be content to be consumed; and that’s fine! It’s pop history, it’s meant to give you a taste of a topic before you go deeper- I also consider Shad to be pop history. Metatron is not as bad as Shad, but his channel also incorporates a lot of silly culture war discourse and tries to “own le libs” and it’s just kinda silly. I think reading actual books from the past and from respected authors is just a better use of ones time than hearing “this WOKE professor doesn’t know what they’re talking about” or “BARBARIANS is now a BAD show!!!!”. That's the funniest part. People like him believe that the "woke mind virus" claimed Hollywood recently and is destroying our "traditional values" in a giant conspiracy known as "culture war", but cirticism they levy against those movies have been made since the dawn of cinematography. It's true that Hollywood has changed and progressed since the days when blackface was ok in movies, but the whole argument of "They're just trying to push their liberal agenda in my enertainment!" has always been there and was just as bad then as it is now. This so called "culture war" is a process that has been constantly happening throughout centuries as societies and societal norms changed and continue to change. It's really nothing new and he should know it as a history nerd.

He's treating Mario like he's Luke Skywalker when he's not. Mario is Mickey Mouse, he's Popeye the Sailor Man, he's a goofy cartoon character in a slapstick routine. Mario was never meant to be a cool knight on a quest, he was deliberately modeled after old school cartoon protagonists. A character like Mickey mouse isn't cool or competent, he gets flattened and burned and beat but he always bounces back and tries his hardest to get the girl. A character like Popeye is more tough and strong but even he suffers ludicrous injuries when competing against Bluto. Popeye also iconically has his own power up in the form of spinach which gives the incredible strength needed to beat Bluto and save Olive Oyle. In the games, Mario can die in all sorts wacky ways but is able to pop back up and try again and the games are built around using any wild trick you can pull off to reachcthe goal. Shad is so obsessed with this Joseph Campbell valiant hero bullshit that he can't understand what a fucking cartoon is.

How is Peach a Mary Sue? Mario is new to that world and Peach has lived there since she was a child. Of course she saves Mario several times. She’s a princess in a dangerous world and Mario is literally just a plumber.

They will literally just throw Mary Sue at any (mostly female) characters they don't like. That term can't even barely grab on its original meaning at this point.

Yet he wants Mario to just be naturally good at the obstacle course, so good that he's the only one who has ever completed it. Somehow that's not Mary Sue behavior (well of course it's not Mary Sue behavior because they only ever use that term to mean "Woman who is competent and doesn't need help with something") Also, having Mario being the only person who has ever completed that obstacle is very similar to the white savior who beats the natives at they're own games and becomes their leader.

The idea that presenting alternatives to "traditional roles" is an attack on "traditional roles," says a lot about the people that hold such values. If simply having a separate option is enough to destabilize and destroy your idea, it might not be a good idea.

Well, that's the thing. Ultra-conservative views are contrary to how the world and society works - it progresses. Always. Ultra-conservative movements always implode in a catastrophe. So, holding onto conservative ideas for too long leads to them being more and more fragile, because they make less and less sense in a changing world. So, yes, by just presenting the option of a more reasonable alternative suitable for the modern times, conservatives crumble, because their views are outdated and make no sense anymore.
