I don't think people realize they are East Germans. Their uniforms looked similar to the Wehrmacht but there was differences the biggest being that on the cap you can see the national emblem of East Germany the hammer and compass. The reason for that was that East Germany wanted to show that it was still German culturlaly while being a communist nation. It was to stab at West Germany and accuse them of having non german uniforms. The Soviet Union and the Warsaw pact never fell apart in the Fallout world so its entirely possible East Germany still existed before the Great War.

@@friskjidjidoglu7415 Dark Star is a dark comedy movie by John Carpenter about the space ship Dark Star and its crew whose mission is to seek out and bomb "unstable planets" that might threaten human civilization. At one point one of the bombs, which are artificially intelligent, gets activated while the bomb bay doors are stuck, with the bomb refusing to respond to commands. In order to stop the bomb, the acting commander space walks out and has a philosophical conversation with it, teaching the bomb about phenomenology, and thus making it doubt itself enough to stop the countdown. It's obviously not a 1-1 parallel with what's happening here but I have no doubt Dark Star at least inspired this section if it isn't supposed to be an explicit reference. I apologize as I accidentally made it one word instead of the proper title of two words in my original post - probably why you couldn't find it.

@teslashark Germany would have been Socialist before. The Soviet Union didn't collapse in Fallout so I think it's safe to assume the Soviet Bloc part of Europe was communist. Although I don't think that means they were really allies with China or anything

The German military used to have awesome uniforms but after WW2, denazification in West Germany basically stripped the German military of obvious cultural Prussian characteristics. While they did continue to use traditional stalhelms in some units for a few more years, the uniforms were Americanized and the ceremonial swords and other such indicators of German culture were stripped due to the belief that this was associated with the Nazis. Even today in many German regions it is illegal to use older German flags from the imperial era despite them being unrelated to the Nazi Party.

East Germany deliberately hung onto Prussian military traditions to appear more legitimate than the West (and this did sort of work).

Germany is part of the European Commonwealth that goes to war with the Middle Eastern bloc but that might just be West Germany. Maybe there is a unified Germany but for whatever reason they just adopted the much cooler-looking DDR style uniforms in this timeline.

There's also a poster that says "we beat them once we will beat them again" showing the ww1 German soldier the ww2 German Soldier and someone in T45d power armor. Meaning the U.S might have lent Germany power armor after Britain cut ties and denounced the US for its annexation of Canada. Othe posters seem to allude that Germany was the UKs main adversary in the Resource Wars. My guess. The eastern bloc was fighting the Resource Wars against the Western nations with chinese support but had a fragile truce that turned sour once the EU civil war started. And since Britain seized American assets in Britain in opposition to the Canada Crisis. The U.S aided and supplied the enemy hoping Europe would just exhaust each other and couldn't oppose a victorious U.S when it defeats China. Garunteeing complete global empire. Which seems aligned with the mindset that US government had in 2077.

Germans would not use "Ihr/Euch" as a form of adress. In German, the formal style use third person. Hans should have said "Why do they speak English?" to Otto.

Depends on a lot of factors. Second person formal (TV distinction) is not as pronounced in some parts of Germany (mainly southern Germany and Austria). It’s not actually third person, it just is similar to third person plural and Sie is capitalised. Middle English had a similar thing too (using third person plural to refer to people in a formal sense). It’s not wrong. I would expect NVA soldiers to use Sie more often, but this is also post-apocalyptic and I don’t think they care about being strictly correct and formal with someone who doesn’t speak German most likely.
