very very nice, looking forward to getting my mitts on one of those very soon.

The synthetic swords in this video were prototypes. However, they most closely resemble the standard model. As a club we only use the proline extreme model. We find the additioal stiffness far better and also stronger edges (especially good for use against steel bucklers or against steel rapiers as well). If anything I would be happy for the extreme models to be stiffer again, but as they are they are hte model I would recommend. The Steel guard also helps with weight and binding/parries.

@brampa The sword and shield material comes from the renaissance Italian manuscripts (Marrozo, di grassi, capo ferro), where that type of concave double strap shield is known as the rotella. Commonly used with plain hilted swords seen here, upto full rapiers, as you will see if some other videos of ours. When the synthetic basket hilts come out we will be doing more on that front, we used to use a lot of steel bladed basket hilted weapons, but none are particularly ideal to fencing practice.

Thanks. These were the early models, what we would now call the light sparring models. The current model is the heavier version and generally much better.

Yes we have broken a few, A couple had air pockets from the molding in the last few inches of the blade (which they replaced as this was a fault). A couple have broken at the tang, but only a few. We use probably a hundred synthetics from the knightshop in the club regularly and have few breaks. The proline extreme is the one to go for, less flex that seen in this video, but still plenty. Don't expect a perfect match up to a steel trainer, but a very cheap and much safer training weapon.

The Leon Paul (search for their website) Contour Coaching Mask. This is by far the best mask available. The Leon Paul Ultimate Club mask is almost as good, only difference being a slightly thinner bib. We also use the SPES (histfenc) back of the head protectors.

@xbladeblue2 Yeh it is an awesome training centre. The jackets are PBT basic coaching jackets, better than the basic leon pauls and cheaper than the thicker LP's, plus no backzips which I hate :-) The back plates are custom made by us out of leather with a foam liner, simply cut as one peice, they replace the plastic dish that the LP comfort fit masks use.

@LegoGenfilms About 3-4 I suppose, more than a shinai, a lot less than a re-enactment blade. Having good gloves, helmet and joint protection are a priority, aside from that the hits are uncomfortable and can lead to bruising if you are fighting at high contact levels with relatively little armour. We still use steel in the club, like the Albion meyers, but these synthetics are our regular safe beginner/high contact trainer.

Thanks, but sadly the one with all the weapons hung up isn't ours, thats the Knight's shop, we train in leisure three seperate leisure centres, it is very nice though I agree!

I thought you guys were excellent!! Especially the two-handed sword sparring!! It seems that virtually all the other historical martial arts sparring videos I see on KZbin show either 1) good technique but done slowly and non-fluidly, or 2) fast but sloppy technique. You guys were fast but had clearly discernable wonderful technique with great footwork. Really impressive!!! Where is the AHF by the way?
@Nikos300011 жыл бұрын
Yes. We use the Knight shop synthetic Proline extreme range (the stiffest of the models) for longsword, single handed sword and basket hilt, and the lightweight model of messer. They are in use alongside steel about 50/50 in our club.

I haven't seen it in person, but with that spec, and especially from a reputable seller like Darkwood, yes. All fencing masks sold by reputable EU and US dealers are good. Just avoid some of the cheap chinese stuff which can be very weak sometimes.

Yep, they are, its not so different to being hit from a thrust from a training rapier, which is nice.

can you do one handed very easily with the longsword? my friends and I use 2.5 Ft. long composite sticks of bamboo for sparring, but looking to get a set of rawlings swords. I saw some one handed swings with the longsword, but looks too long to be able to wield it like that normally, is my thinking correct?

I understand that this was over six years ago (w0w) but I myself want to get into HEMA and swordsmanship but there are no clubs or events near where I live so I've started solo training myself with a very cheaply done wooden sword I bought for a tenner (well... 9 euro but I wasn't gonna pester him for that change). From watching this the swords seem a lot sturdier than I thought they might be. Would you still recommend these swords to a complete newbie like me? I'd imagine them being a bit heavier than what I have right now so it probably would be better for learning the basics. Since I don't have that much money, I might buy the cheapest starter kit with an arming sword if you still think these are good enough.
@zacrigby44267 жыл бұрын
PJ McDaid yes, I would. I'm in the same boat, no HEMA clubs around and I've been using PVC pipe for longswords and broom handles for spears etc., but I've ordered a pair of factory extras for £25 a piece, I think they should be good, I think you should do the same
@Pamjamelia7 жыл бұрын
I would have done the same if I didn't actually find a HEMA club like I did. But wow... amazing how much can happen in seven months, eh?

What sort of body protection are you wearing ? I don't imagine they don't have some impact when hitting someone
@Nikos300010 жыл бұрын
This was over four years ago and our equipment has changed quite a bit. See the SPES historical fencing equipment company as we buy a lot of our kit from them now and it is purpose built for historical fencing using both synthetic and steel weapons. Largely it means having quilted protection over most areas and hard plastic over joints and hands.

@Nikos300011 жыл бұрын
Its clumsy. Any true longsword should be in one hand though. If you want something that can be wielded one or two handed then you want a bastard sword, this is best represented in the Rawlings range by fitting the extended pommel onto a one handed sword.

What shields are those?
@AcademyofHistoricalFencing9 жыл бұрын
ge ae Police riot shields. These were the clear ones that we painted, they were too weak and we destroyed one during this test. We then moved on to the thicker solid black ones, despite being much stronger, we have still broken a couple of those using synthetic swords. They are great for rapier and rotella though.

final opinion sloppy. i fight with different swords myself even swords from the knight shop. these guys if you look closely are hugging more than anything thier bodies are too ridged...maybe they are being too serious and not just enjoying it but there is definatly something off here
