I spent years dreaming of that game existing! Why, Japan?! I had the chips! If they had just released it in the US, I would've been on that shit like white on rice!
@OPLOmega8 ай бұрын
The issue, you see, comes from the specific chips needed for this itself. The Chip Gate itself is only compatible with Battle Chips specifically made to work with the toy PET used in 4 & the Axess anime season. I might be miss remembering but only the Plug-In model got a US release? (in any case these sorts of toys would only ever see big success in Japan due to walkable cities making it simple to just find a place that sells toy accessories & card packs for shit)

@NumberXIIIEdwin8 ай бұрын
They actually had compatibility like this for 5 and 6 too, although they both needed their own versions of the Chip Gate. 5’s was closest to 4.5 where it turned the battles into a similar style where your Navi would move on its own while you focused on chips (I think they called it Operation Battle?). If I’m remembering right the data was left intact and translated in the US versions so if you manage to find a chip gate and its chips it should work. 6 removed the Operation Battle feature but it still let you slot in real chips during battles, but this is as hectic as it sounds since you’re still in full control of MegaMan. You once again have to buy a new kind of chip gate (dubbed the Beast Link Gate) but in exchange you got access to some pretty cool features including having a permanent Beast Out transformation just for having it plugged in. You could also use Navi Data chips in the post game to swap out playable Navis which also let you play as ProtoMan in 6. All of these features unfortunately got completely removed from the US versions.
@kemix10068 ай бұрын

Knowing John's luck, Capcom will revive both Battle Network and Star Force as soon as he's done reviewing both. And then Shanghai.EXE and ChronoX will also finish. And then Inafune will make his own Battle Network spin-off. I'm just here to continue to insist that all of these games could have been really good in the modern era with a bit of polish. Okay, a lot of polish for the platformers, those have some problems. But like, Battle Chip Challenge with an ability to select chips and potentially a different "board" with bonus effects if you use those chips, and maybe an ability to choose which chip you're targeting with damage? I feel like that would actually be a fun concept to play around with. Heck, Real Operation is already solid, just throw it on mobile, remove the time gates, add a simpler way to power up your Navis and you could make a really good Battle Network experience in the modern day. It won't ever happen, but I can dream.
@bloboblobo7 ай бұрын
Battle chip challenge it's pretty good (once you search or try to figure out priorities, and to be fair, the game manual says elemental chips have priority over non elemental ones) but it's a game you either get hooked into and figure out how to beat it step by step or you straight up dislike. Also it's not a pay to win although you may have bad luck and not draw any wood, fire, aqua or elec attacking chips after the first class tournaments, but that's kinda unlikely, and you only need two of one element to go to the tournament of the element it wins against, then AT THAT SAME TOURNAMENT you get the navi and chips to win against the element it wins against, then rinse and repeat. That is unless you have Ring (which he did) since her shooter is a double 20 which becomes a double 40 on ice and double 50 on ice against aqua navi, oh, and also adds that damage to opponent last chip on execution line.

Cob Nation represent! Also #fucknumberman One thing that's odd is ShadowMan in Network Transmission 'kinda' makes sense since he was also a secret boss in Battle Network 1 even if he had 0 story relevance. As for the Battle Chip Gate...SOME "totally real GameBoy Advance TM" programs on Windows ACTUALLY support emulating it so at least they are usable. So even if we don't have access to the thrill of slotting in chips in real life with a plastic toy piece tacked onto our GBA's at least we can push some buttons to do the same to see what it would've done. Another thing that does stand out to me about how hostile 4.5 is to changing up characters is maybe despite all the character specific roadblocks the game intended for you to get attached to your Navi, much like how in the anime you don't really see people swap their navis out left and right?
@batmabel8 ай бұрын
With how time-gated the game is, I *think* you're supposed to progress with all your Navis at the same time? I mean, you can enroll more than one Navi on the weekly tournaments, so maybe you're supposed to, like, play a bit with a different Navi each day or something? It's still a weird design decision if that's the case, and the fact that each Navi has a separate folder is outright bad, but that makes more sense at least.

As you pointed out a hack for Battlechip Challenge, I want to point one out for 4.5, actually it's a hack of a hack, the PvP Patch for 4.5 is a next step from the Real Battle Network gameplay by making all of the Navi's much more unique, and implementing mechanics from BN6 for an amazing PvP experience. Megaman takes inspiration from both the other games and the 4.5 megabuster by having more Mega and Giga chip capacity allowing him to use and abuse the powers of other navis, while Bass needs no friendship, Roll has self healing and can summon Mettaurs to stall, or Starman being a goofy goober who can use a random effect at the start of the turn. It's a blast and it's worth giving a play session with a friend.

I learned a lot of how to optimize getting every license and how to fight every boss perfectly. You can sign up to 5 navis at a time for a License, but only 1 can be done per day up til Saturday/Sunday. The battlechip Counter will be your friend for everything. The AI is janky, but can be manipulated well if you know what you're doing, like, if you have holes on the field and can't move too good and an attack is coming, suddenly a panel opens up, you can set the distance and enemy youre focusing on, use the buster and the navi teleports to that space! Basically I enjoyed 4.5 a lot more than other daily kinda games, it was fun, i built gimmicky folders for certain navis, got to play as Bass! Etcetc

Great video! I’m glad to know I wasn’t the only one who struggled horribly with the gamecube game. I was super into the anime as a kid, I even put subbed episodes onto my iPod nano to watch in the car, but didn’t have any of the games for this MM series in specific. So you can imagine my excitement when I finally found a used copy for cheap at a game store…. Yeah, it was the Network Transmission game. I knew nothing about it, and I couldn’t get past Fire Man either! I think I gave up after a few times out of frustration and boredom, and had difficulty understanding the chip mechanics, especially not playing the RPGs before. Keep in mind I had my parents' old NES MM games and had beat a few of them by the time I had picked up this game. It was my first experience with being disappointed with a game purchase. My second game I got was… a Japanese copy of Battle Chip Challenge. I brute forced learning that game and the language at the same time out of sheer determination. The limited gameplay definitely helped in that regards. Thankfully, this introduction didn’t sour me to the experience of this franchise.

And while I know it's standard for MegaMan games by now, taking in account that most of these are not made by Capcom themselves, the music is just as amazing.

It had its flaws, for sure, but the unique experience it provided in contrast to the "main series" MMBN games was a pretty cool change of pace. You could also input some codes from MMBN4 into Battle Chip Challenge and you'd fight a special character deck for characters from the series. It was also fun to ask Protoman what he thought the chances of victory were before a match and have him respond with "95%", "56%", "20%" was fun at the time.

BCC: I never played more than a few hours of this. It's only good if you're looking for a Mega Man Battle Network game to fill the void. 4.5: Would you believe me if I told you the BN4 "Tournament Advancement" Music is listed under 4.5 on the Soundtrack? John didn't mention this but you can emulate all of the Battle Chip Gates using mGBA or GreigaMaster's "Battle Chip Gate Homebrew" if you have a second Game Boy Advance, a Link Cable, and a Flash Cart.. I'm guessing John didn't use this because he either didn't know (or it interferes with recording footage).

I personally really love Battle Chip Challenge, myself. But maybe that's just because I REALLY dig Turboman.exe and Ring.exe's designs.

10:37 Actually, if you jack out, you can go to Higsby's shop and buy Aqua Swords, just two of them will delete Fireman. I remember doing this as a kid because I could not beat him otherwise no matter how hard I tried, though I also used to be awful at Megaman in general.

I'm so glad you like network transmission even though it's kind of awful. I feel the same way ha ha. Just letting you know since even the wiki has wrong information on it.... In 4.5 the third row of playable navis on the character select screen were battlegate exclusive navis. As in you had to buy the associated physical navi chip into the battlegate toy while playing 4.5 to unlock them. The English translation patch, knowing most people won't have the toys, give you ways to unlock those navis through in-game means. It's mentioned in the patch notes. Wonderful video, great job! Always love seeing things from you.

Network Transmission - The worst part about being released to launch the anime is that you don't get to take part in it, which is the fate of BN3 in most of these anime-tie ins. The music direction while different than the standard GBA mainline style still screams a Battle Network identity to it. In particular is BrightMan's stage theme, which is clearly derived from the electronic jazz scene from the 70s-80s that the composer Shinji Hosoe is inspired from (look up Yellow Magic Orchestra). Also Blazing Internet, FireMan's stage, is just *chef's kiss*. The Wonderswan game looks like they took a few assets from Megaman Zero, or at least have a similar style to it, in contrast to the weird 3D platformer stuff from NT. PharaohMan gets to shine in both platformer spinoffs after being wasted potential in the games with Ancient Egypt themed stages instead of being bound to the postgame dungeons. BCC - I played 3 and only 3 before trying this out so I was caught off guard by recycled assets from the first two games. The weird music and gameplay didnt bother me that much because I just sped up the totally legit copy as what kids would do back then. I can't believe i beat most of the enemies with multiple characters either, only missing the secret bosses probably. 4.5 - Controlling other Navis seems like a precursor to XDive. Imagine all the barely different alts Mega, Bass, and Roll will get. PlantMan is chosen to return somehow despite not appearing in 4,5, and 6. Also 4.5 cartridge is needed to unlock stuff in 5DTDS which is its own kind of evil.

I grew up on Battlechip Challenge! The game basically plays itself once you get D Level. All you really need to do is beat your face into Woodman until he gives in, then get a few treebom chips of any level. They are powered up by being the same element as woodman, and will absolutely wipe all your enemy chips, causing you to just mercilessly beat down on practically anything in the game. You can hold onto this "strategy" even when woodman is elementally disadvantageous or the enemies are all about shielding, because chip wiping like this is just that strong. I have a soft spot for the game, but honestly it's not very good :')

Tbh I didn't have any real issues when I was playing this on the GameCube as a kid. I'll admit it was a lil tough but the music and the lighting effects of the charged shot was wat got me hooked and kept me going.

Honestly I'm pretty into battle chip challenge. I love deckbuilding games, and I love the gacha mechanic (when it is separated from real money.) It's a super fun game if you enjoy deckbuilding. It sounds like he just doesn't like *deckbuilding* in general. Especially when you consider he does basically buster only runs if his other battle network reviews are any indication. This game was ahead of its time imo.

I hope they reuse these netnavis and some human characters IF (a big IF) they decide to continue the Battle Network series. Ring.EXE, Needleman.EXE and Turboman.EXE's designs are too cool to just use in one game, let alone an obscure spin off of a spin off series. On that note, it would also be cool if they redesigned more robot masters to be different genders in netnavi form. Never really thought about the fact that there are only 3 female netnavis.

I loved the idea of 4.5 real Operation but aside from the fan mods improvements , it was a messy spinoff. But I love it regardless😅😅😅

Not only was Glide ignored in 4.5. But he was such an ignored character that he and Yai weren't even part of a game using static images of navis with some animation for attacks. All they needed to do was give him a battle sprite and a buster attack animation for battle chip challange...and they still chose to give the character slot to a completely new character who needed overworld and battle sprites...do...do they just hate Glide and Yai?

Network Transmission annoys me because its difficulty curve is a freaking sine wave. Fireman is WAY too difficult to be the boss of the intro stage, and then the game has random spikes and valleys

It's always intriguing to hear about Battle Chip Challenge cause I must have major nostalgia cause I remember some features but others I remember very differently like I remember at some point operating Toadman after a shop purchase and I don't remember the battle system AT ALL. I just remember it being extremely hard.

In network transmission you can fight bass too. You only fighting till he loses like a quarter of his health, then his cloak shreds and you see him without it. I find this funny because it’s a classic trope that he’s getting serious by the cloak coming off. But throughout Battle network. That cloak is like a second skin to bass. It never comes off, only shortens for like cross fusion which I find funny
