Knipex 8" Compact Bolt Cutters - What Will They Cut & How Do I Use Them?

Today's review is for the Knipex Compact Bolt Cutters. Mine is the 8" Model - Part # 71-31-200. They also many variations of this tool.

These are a staple used for musky fishing, cutting any large hooks from a lure or if you accidentally get hooked

Best tool ever for cutting barbed wire. I also use them for salvaging copper tubing, good for up to 3/8" if you take small bites.

I don’t do much fencing but the whole time I’ve used them I kept thinking these would be great for that… that’s why my brain kept mentioning it in the video 😂. Good tip on the tubing, thanks for the suggestion 👍

They sold me on thr tapcons man, i live in guam and all our houses are concrete so being able to cut a tapcon to length without breaking out the grinder is super handy

Yeah for such a small pair that surprised me too. Tapcons are some tuff screws

I love those little bolt cutters. They come in handy all the time for me. I never know when I’m gonna run into something I need to cut with those, but every couple of weeks those little guys save the day. I like those ones with the notch to hold something in place between the blades. Mine don’t have that.

Yeah I’ve never had a pair small enough to use with one hand. They have been pretty useful. I’ve always had found a way to get done what I needed without them… but these do it in a way I won’t end up losing a finger 😂. Right tool makes the difference.

I have the same model and have been using them for the last 8 years for cutting filler wire for TIG welding. They are awesome. Before that I used the Klein lineman’s and they did a great job but the knipex are so much more compact. Great video

Good use… I used to Weld quite a bit back in the day. Not something I have done much of recently. I also never got the hang of TIG, just MIG and Stick.

A friend of mine regularly works with fencing and agricultural wires and he swears by the long version. It's small enough to carry on him and it cuts everything he comes in contact with

😂. I was really surprised how easily these cut them. These small one handed bolt cutters are not a tool I had used before. I had used some smaller ones, but they were still large enough to need two hands. These have turned out to be a pretty handy tool… and will no doubt make some of my other tools cutters last longer.

Mine would go through Barb Wire no problem… I haven’t used them for that, but what I have used them on I wouldn’t think it would be an issue

@@MORGANSMaintenance oddly enough, UPS just dropped mine off, so I ran out back to try it on that old fence I need to get rid of. Goes through barbed wire like butter.

I love mine so much and have those exact ones and they cut everything so amazingly including the webbing of your hand between your thumb and forefinger. The scars I have to prove it prove my stupidity which is another issue😂that area behind the river area is scary!

I was thinking of getting a pair of these in the 160mm length for wheel building (or more accurately wheel unbuilding before rebuilding) but I'm not sure if they're overkill or not. Bike spokes are about 2mm thick, often stainless steel and I'll want to cut out a whole wheel (28-36 spokes) of them with minimal effort and without ruining the tool. Has anybody got other/better suggestions?

I don’t have those… or an old bike to go try it out. I can’t imagine it won’t do it, I’ve cut some stuff with these that has surprised me. Hopefully some others will chime in with some suggestions.

I just bought the 71 22 200 and they will NOT cut through a long 5/16 hex head sheet metal screw. With both hands I cut through a short 5/16 hex head sheet metal screw .

I don’t know if I’ve done any sheet metal screws, but I’ve cut quite a few others with these. It’s weird that it cuts a short and not a long. Seems like they would be the same screw

Suppliers are misleading on what these are. they are not bolt cutters. The Germans who make these list them as music wire cutters. I use them in the Knife Shop four cutting stainless steel pins that nips won't begin to touch. They are not designed to cut bolts. KnifeMaker

Yeah the info on it talks about Piano wire. They have cut about anything I’ve put in them that will fit… not saying you should cut the stuff with them, but I’ve been impressed with what they will cut. I’ve been using them mostly for ceiling grid wire and fixture type screws. Appreciate your thoughts 👍
