Holy moly. I don't know why I never looked for a tutorial for this before tonight but to have yours be the first one that came up in my search was a godsend. I also knit using magic loop (I despise dpns). I have knitted far too many mittens and ended up sewing the hole closed. I followed your instructions and...Wow! No hole! Thank you.

I'm working on a mitten pattern that doesn't cast-on stitches after the thumb stitches are put on a holder, so there is an obvious gap where the thumb stitches and the hand stitches separate. Without much hope, I tried the technique described in this video tutorial, and combined it with the technique described by Suzanne Bryan, in her video tutorial, "Knit Perfect Thumb Gussets for Fingerless Mitts / Mittens / Gloves". Much to my surprise, it worked like a charm. Not only does it eliminate the gap, but it does it so elegantly! Thanks for taking the time to produce and publish this video.

Wow this tutorial saved my project! I bought a fingerless gloves pattern but the thumb instructions were so bad. I had to rip it so many times. Your is perfect and there are no holes on the sides just a little one at the base of the thumb. Perfect. Thank you.

@katherinevetter94006 жыл бұрын
Your technique is really neat, literally and figuratively. Right now I am knitting a pair of mittens with lace weight yarn and I’ll be making a liner to go inside them so I can get more practice on the liner thumb gusset before I do the second mitten. I picked up the two extra stitches and proceeded to start knitting the thumb but there still is a little gap . I’m thinking that since the yarn is so fine that perhaps I stretched it a bit and I’m also thinking maybe I should have picked up at least one more. Do you ever have instances where you need to pick up more than two extra stitches? If so, would you pick them up one after the other so they are in the same row? Thank you.

This looks great! I'm curious . . . after you put the thumb stitches on waste yarn and knit around, did you cast on any new stitches before rejoining in the round to complete the top of the mitt in this particular pattern?
@amandas54818 жыл бұрын
Hi Allison! No, I didn't. There was no need with this particular pattern, especially when I pick up the two stitches this way.

The description says you show how to start a thumb....but your gusset is already done! How did you make a gusset without "stealing" 3 stitches from the hand and having to pick them up later? Love this technique but can't figure out how to start gusset
@aknitica2 ай бұрын
Sorry about that! I guess I meant "start a thumb after the gusset is finished and it's time to return to those help stitches." But to answer your question: Gussets can begin in any number of ways. If you don't want to steal any stitches from the hand, you can begin it with a M1 or a Backwards Loop, then build the gusset triangle with that new stitch as the base. That's the method I usually use, so any of my mitten patterns on Ravelry will feature that type of thumb gusset, if you want line-by-line instructions.

What did you mean by "to avoid laddering"?
@cathwn7 жыл бұрын
Often, when you're working in the round, wherever you have the end of a set of stitches (for dpn: at the end of each needle, for magic loop: where the length of the loop is, for 2 circular needles: the end of each needle) the knitting between those two set of stitches runs the risk of being looser than the regular knitting along the length of the needle. If you continue having those looser stitches each row, you end up with a loose line running down your knitting, called a ladder. Tugging the yarn tighter than normal, when you come to the end of a set of stitches ensures you don't end up with loose, laddered knitting.
