Join Kelley as she rediscovers the art of tatting! In the third video of our Shutting Tatting series, you'll learn what a chain is and how to make one. This method does require the use of two separate yarn sources and Kelley goes over a few different options. When it is time to make a chain, Kelley will show you how to use and work with two shuttles at once to make your chain.
Be sure to check out Kelley's Shuttle Tatting Class at the link below to see additional video tutorials:

Thank you for your video. I was having such a hard time trying to understand the words in the same book you are using. Guess I'm a visual person and your video made it so simple to understand.

This series of tutorials is great, but I had one hiccup that I could not solve. When I went to make my second ring after the second tutorial, I was not able to make the thread slide to close the ring without a long gap in the work. I watched the KP tutorial sevaral times and then looked at several other tutorials here on youtube (including a great set by Esther) and could not make any headway. I ultimately used the Learning to Tat DVD and solved my problem

This was an extremely helpful video...reason: couldn't understand why my chains kept turning into rings...duh...needed 2 separate sources...ball string/or shuttle or 2 shuttels...thank you so much for clearing this up...

Having said that, these are great tutorials and I am very grateful to have them as a tool.

After watching the first lesson on Learning to Tat on DVD, my problem was solved. The relaxation of the left index finger to allow the stitch to flow from the right hand thread to the left hand thread was the trick. That was not clear to me from the KP tutorials or the ones by Esther. Kelley does make this point in this third tutorial, but I think it would be useful to move it up to the first tutorial to avoid learning bad habits and then having to unlearn them to proceed past the first ring.

I had a problem with your explanation as to whether you attach the second thread which is equivalent to the ball thread. In this case you are not actually using the thread off the ball but another shuttle instead. So the attaching part is the question.

So far, your videos about tatting have been very helpful and informative. However, this last one left me feeling a bit confused as you spent alot of time going thru the motions and focusing on the gestures involved but absolutely no time or attention paid toward allowing the viewer to get a visual idea of how the piece comes together. I wasn't sure how exactly the two threads came to be joined-for example, will I leave a tail hanging between the picots and chains until it's complete in its entirety and THEN snip it? And will this cause any obstructions for me as I continue on with my work? OR is it somehow nearly tucked away out of sight? In the end, I was left w/more questions than answers, I felt, and it was solely based upon the fact that your progress was always hidden just out of view the entire time. I rewound it over and over, trying to catch a peek of how it was coming along and still didn't manage to get it all figured out. I'm obviously a very visual learner...Oh well though-it's not like you're going to up and reshoot your video on account of MY shortcomings...I just thought I'd mention it and see if anyone else felt the same way or if I'm just a uniquely, supreme moron!

+Brandy Kamarainen I thought the same thing about this video.. it was very helpful but I with it went over if we are suppose to snip the second thread off once one of the chains is made or do we work it through until we we have to make another chain??

i agree with areli. there's no reason to switch back and forth between your face and your hands so much. just .... keep the camera on your hands. that's what matters. going back and forth makes it hard to keep focused. if anyone wants to check out a different tutorial, i recommend the youtube user kcabrera74. hands-only videos, no talking.

II Love your tutorials! But I wish that who ever is holding the camera will concentrate on your hands, so we can see better what you are doing, and all the explanations, because the so suddenly moves from your hands to far away to yourself, to suddenly again to your hands gets me dizziness. Thanks in advance for the attention you may give to my request.
