This is a side level in our brioche knitting series, how to fix mistakes in brioche. I realized there were several mistakes we could address, so I will probable make a couple more episodes over the next few weeks. Today is what to do if you discover a missing wrap (yarn over) as you are working a row.
If you have never tried brioche knitting before, I highly recommend starting with brioche in the round, on which we have a whole series of videos- those are the videos in which I describe the brioche knitting process in great detail, and you learn the stitches with one color doing the knit rows, the other color doing the purl rows.I've also made a video on how knitting brioche flat is a little more challenging, but possible to master!
May your crafting be filled with joy and confidence!
Rebecca
Brioche Helpful Hints and Reminders
Brioche is a series of either knit or purled stitches and slipped stitches with yarn wrapped around them. One row will be brioche knit (brk, “bark”, knit a stitch with its wrap), slip a stitch and wrap it, etc; the other will be brioche purl (brp, “burp”, purl a stitch with its wrap), slip a stitch and wrap it, etc.
Each row is worked twice, once with color A, then again with color B. Therefore, even when knitting brioche flat, circular or double point needles must be used.
All stitches that need to be slipped should be slipped purlwise.
The slipped stitches are never the ones with the yarn-overs. If you find yourself slipping a yarn over, pause and figure out where you might have gotten off.
The worked stitches (brioche knit and brioche purl) after the setup row will always be a stitch and its wrap. If this is not the case, you may either be working the wrong stitch, or it may not have gotten a wrap on the last row. This can be fudged by picking up the strand that was not wrapped!
In two-color brioche, you are always slipping the color you are NOT working with. Therefore the wraps will always be a different color from the stitches they are wrapped around.
You are always bringing the working yarn forward before a slip stitch so it can wrap the slipped stitch. This means on a knit row, you bring the yarn forward before you slip the purl stitch, then bring the yarn over to the back before your next brioche knit stitch. On a purl row, your yarn will already be in front from brioche purling: slip the knit stitch, and bring the yarn over the right needle and back to the front for your next brioche purl .
There are many ways to bind off. The easiest, though not the most stretchy, is to *K1 P1, rep from * with one color in the established ribbing, brk or brp depending on the row, then cast off in the ribbing with the same color on the next row.
When working Brioche FLAT :
If both yarns are at the same end of the work, it is time to turn your work and start with color A (solid or dark).
If the yarns are at opposite ends of the work, DO NOT TURN the work- slide it back to the other end of the needles and work with color B (variegated or light).
The color that is more prominent, with clear “V”s popping out and running down the surface of the work, is the color that is working a brk row on that side. The other color is working a brp row.

Oh my gosh!!!!! I can’t believe I found you. I’ve been struggling to learn brioche for two weeks; I’ve learned the basics, but, I still make mistakes (especially at the end of a round🤷‍♀️). Last night, I decided to quit, unless I could figure out how to fix mistakes - this morning, in one last ditch effort I searched for a video to help me figure it out and this dropped from the heavens into my feed. Thank you!!!!!!!!! I’ll be eagerly awaiting all future installments!

That was an amazing tutorial! I just wish I had found you 6 months ago when I completely frogged 1/3 of a shawl because I made too ,any errors while learning and had to start over. That was teaching in itself, and I learned a lot about brioche and how stitches are formed, so not a loss. I am now on my 7th attempt from scratch starting this brioche shawl-Cinnabar Shawl by Andrea Mowry of DreaReneeKnits. Life lessons! Lol Keep up with the excellent way you teach. I subscribed and am binge watching ALL your previous podcasts and learning so much. Have been knitting for decades and just venturing into brioche and I made my first sweater, and it fit! Woo hoo!

OMG - your video with illustration and explanation are awesome. I'm learning first one color brioche and couldn't figure out what I had done or how to fix. But now I understand how to identify and fix and I'm going to try to make that yarn over mistake so I can practice fixing. I can't wait to view your other fixing brioche videos.

Awesome video!! As a former teacher, I really appreciate how you explained the steps verbally, in writing, with drawings, used color-coding, and demonstrated with yarn. You made this super clear and easy to follow. Thanks so much!

This was so close to the help that I was looking for. I need to know what to do if you have a wrap and you’re not supposed to. But the rest of it looks fine.

That one may be tougher to diagnose why it happened- you can try just knitting or purling it in like a brioche knit or purl, it’d it doesn’t look right after (and you’re not ok with that) you may have to tink out (back out) and redo. ❤️

@@SunDragonTipsTricks I ended up tinking back. Turned out I forgot to Brk or Brp (don’t recall which now) the stitch, must have slipped it which explains the extra yarn over I had that was really confusing me. I think I accidentally dropped it while trying to figure things out.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!! I have been brioching forward and backward to deal with missing YOs and you have made it SOOO easy to fix without ripping out! Now if I could just master switching between knitting and purling and what to do with everything during the end/beginning of the row in the round I’ll be set! Getting there…. Thanks for the clear explanation on fixing brioche!

Thanks for letting me know Donna, glad I could help! My intro to brioche in the round might have some tips on the end/beginning of rows that are helpful- some patterns start with a purl instead of a knit to help that transition go better, but my videos are for starting with a knit :) ❤️

Wow. Very thorough explanations! Thank you. I have suggestions for future brioche videos if you haven't done them yet. I suggest showing us how to actually put the stitches back on the needle from a life line row. Sounds obvious but I think it's a little harder than one might imagine. Also how to tink a bbbrRsl dec and maybe also the brLsl dec. And finally, those end stitches can be buggers to tink. Thank you!!

Hi Linda- great suggestions, I’ll do what I can. I have a list of suggestions, I’ll keep adding to it! Tinking really specific stitches can be more of a challenge for a video, and the one you mention that sounds like alphabet soup 🤣 is probably very specific to a certain patttern? I’ll definitely look into getting stitches back on the needle form a lifeline some time in the future, I have some basic tinking videos that might help a bit with some of the other issues🤷‍♀️……. ❤️
