Hello, I have knitted a bunch of toe up socks with the magic loop co, and then increasing every other row. I never liked the trapezoid toe shapes. I once came across a video that showed how to do a rounded toe. I can’t fid the video again. Was it one of yours? Do you have a pattern for a rounded toe?

This is my new favorite way to knit socks - two at a time or even just one at a time. I’ve used this technique to modify other sock patterns and it’s made the whole process so much more enjoyable for me! Not to mention, I love the look of the finished GSR toe/heel too. Starting one toe at a time is genius. I just knitted gloves TAAT, and when I got frustrated with fiddly bits I just held the stitches on one and concentrated on the other. Easy enough to pick up the second once I'd worked out the problem on the first glove. BTW, I used your trick of holding stitches on size 0 circs - much easier to pick up than from yarn!

You are the only person whose sock patterns I have been able to follow correctly for socks (and I consider myself a medium-advanced knitter). I could never get the hang of turning the heel! Watching a few of your videos inspired me to try myself at sock knitting again. I learned knitting socks the traditional way, with five skinny needles from the top to the toe. What I find especially fantastic is the magic loop technique. Funny for me is your way of holding the working yarn with your right hand and moving the index finger to wrap the yarn around the needle. That looks similar to the 'French' method to me. I am German and learned to hold the working yarn in the left hand, threaded between the pinkie and the ring finger and passed around the back of the index finger. The working needle passes through a stitch and catches the thread and pulls through. Your explanations are excellent. I've got to try this...I've got to try this ...

Ok guys.. i'm a magic loop purist, and I have to admit it's easier to just start these on DPNs and then switch to the loop when you're done shaping the toes. If you don't have DPNs you can still do it, but it's a lot more hassle of untangling yarn and sliding things around

But the juice just isn't worth the squeeze - You could just have 2 completely separate knitting projects and it would be almost the same thing but much less tangling and confusion, what do you think?

You say no for substitutions for the toe of the sock while I say -technically- one could but they must understand that it can change the look of the pattern. I myself can't do a provisional cast on for my live but I can do Judy's magic cast on almost in my sleep.

It's less about changing the look of the pattern by using a different cast-on...Judy's Magic CO starts you off in an entirely different place, and therefore changes the construction completely.

Yes. You can substitute in a different toe provided the stitch count is the same. I say it "cannot" be done, only because changing the cast-on would mean that you would no longer be able to follow the part of the pattern written for the toe. You would need to follow a different pattern, and the toe section of the video tutorial would also no longer be helpful.

You can (I’ve done it). You will have think of the reserved half of JMCO or Turkish cast on as equivalent to half of the first foot round. So you might have do an extra half round to even up. (I didn’t, I just changed how I visualized the toe and foot).

amaizing!!! my next up project is 2 at a time toe up socks and have been trying to find a good pattern. this is EXACTLY what i wanted! though I do like cables/lace/patterns in my socks but I can always add it in. I have second sock syndrome before I even start. I DONT LOVE knitting socks. its ok. but its the most practical and useful thing i can make. I dont wear shawls/cowls/scarvest hat much and havent been brave enough to do a sweater (plus i only use superwash and that gets pricey quite fast)

You mention in your video that you can't substitute JMCO or Figure 8 cast on for the provisional cast on you use. I've done this successfully with JMCO, you just need to place the 2nd needle of stitches on hold until you need them, & no unpicking the provisional cast on 🙂 In fact it's just like knitting a short row heel Great videos 😍, Karen

Yes - it can be done, but those cast-ons generally (in most patterns) start the sock in a different place, as you begin working in-the-round immediately. It can be done, but I highly recommend that people who are learning how to knit socks with my tutorials follow the provoco I use in the video for the easiest knitting, and the best success.

Hi from Pretoria, South Africa. I started with my 1st pair - two at a time on 2 circular needles as the magic loop is my nightmare. Toes completed and it fits like a dream. Thank you for a very well written pattern. But I do have a couple of questions: 1) what is the best way to pick up the provisional cast on stitches direction wise using 2 needles? 2) how does the GSR compare to the Japanese short row technique ito durability, holes, picking up dropped stitches, etc? 3) how and when do I modify/increase stitches to create more height in the gusset? I have an injury in my one leg that often leads to my ankle and leg to swell significantly making it problematic to put on socks.

I'm not sure that I understand your first question, but I'll get to the others...Japanese short rows are another way of working short rows, I recommend giving them a try for yourself on a swatch to see the difference. kzbin.info/www/bejne/p4OZepp4h8iJa7s Unless you're a really experienced sock knitter, I don't recommend altering a sock pattern. Modifying any part of a sock pattern really means scraping the original and writing a whole new pattern. Your best bet is to find sock patterns with long gussets, and probably avoid short row heels. It is more accurate to say 2.75mm needles...different needle gauges put size US 2 at different millimeters. And yes, this pattern uses sock/fingering weight yarn.

Hi, Staci. I have both your loaded gsr and sling heel patterns. Any chance of getting loaded gsr sock pattern with dk weight yarn instructions? Making a "loaded" pair for my bil using dk weight yarn. I've been going back and forth between both patterns, but that can be confusing. I basically used the dk yarn toe instructions in the sling heel pattern for the heels of the "loaded" socks. Have lost my place and some sanity a few times!

Hello Staci! Love your work and your KZbin channel is my “go to” for all things knitting and I never miss your podcast. Just a question in this pattern… once you have picked up stitches from the provisional CO and positioned them on the magic loop needles, pretend you are continuing to use the toe yarn for the rest of the sock (as I am). My working yarn ends up on the front needle. Is this ok/correct? I went ahead and started knitting in the round with my magic loop (although just the one sock as I don’t have second sock syndrome ) however, it looked a bit like a gap was created because the two sides of the sock didn’t get ”pulled” together by having the yarn on the back needle.In the end, when I came back to the beginning, I picked up a stitch from the row below, placed it on the left needle, and knitted what then became two stitches together so as not to change the Stitch count but somewhat closed a hole. Sorry for the long comment. I have successfully used this latter before but it has been a while and I could not remember 👌

No - you probably aren't doing anything wrong. Some people, usually with higher arches, need a bit more room around the heel. In that case, you might do better with a sock pattern that has gusset increases. I have a few of those patterns available as tutorials. I purchased the first pattern before which was called two at a time toe up magic loop socks. Then I discovered Stacy's video I'm doing German short row instead of the traditional wrap and turn. I fell in love with this technique as it was so much easier. Now I come acrossed another of Stacy's video being this one here where she shows how to do one at a time toe and then transfer to a circular needle. This also was so much faster and easier. Thank you Stacey for all your videos and your written directions. I wish that I could buy the all. But I figured it out with the help of your video and written pattern that I had from before. It was so easy to do but my mind was not thinking right.

Hmmm...could you use Turkish as a provisional co? 🤔 So cast on the same amount of stitches with Turkish, then instead of going both sides with Turkish you just work one side for the toe (like you do here), and just leave the other stitches until you're ready to come back. I suppose you'd need either circulars or a stitch holder though, or maybe a 3rd double point if you have end stoppers 🤔

It can be done, but it will be a significant modification to the toe, since the Turkish CO starts you in a different spot of the sock.

No, I don't recommend that...you'll end up with either really huge socks (bigger gauge), or a really stiff non-stretchy fabric (correct gauge, thick yarn). Your tutorials are always amazing - thank you! I REALLY don't like/enjoy provisional cast-ons thoough. I always have a terrible time picking up the stitches from the provisional cast-on. I have other sock patterns that don't use a provisional CO, like this one, a new pattern: verypink.com/2019/07/31/star-toed-fleegle-socks/ The style of toe used in this pattern really needs a provisional CO - using a different CO would start you off in a different part of the toe, and wouldn't work with this pattern. I encourage you to practice the provoco as I demonstrate it in this video - it's a good skill to have, and it makes a lot of toe-up sock patterns possible!

Hey Staci, though I'm fairly new to knitting, (3) yrs, I'm gonna give this a try! I have a sock pattern, lace pattern that I'm going to attempt to use! I was wondering though, when doing provisional cast ons, can we use a yarn slightly bigger than the fingering weight yarn that we're using to knit the socks with?

Yes - I always use worsted weight yarn for the provoco, regardless of the weight of yarn I'm using in the sock. It's just easier.

I've knit these socks and love them so much. Would love to knit them again but with a pattern on the cuff and foot (like a lace pattern or a cable). If I got a pattern for the cuff, would this change the overall fit of the sock?

I can't answer that - it depends on the stitch pattern you choose. You'll need to test it out to see. I can tell you this - a cable pattern is going to make the sock tighter.

Hi Staci, this is my first pair of socks in the sock yarn and I am very excited I finally got the toes finished and moving onto the foot. I have a question about the loose yarn, do you just weave those ends into the sock or do I need to knot them off first befire weaving in the ends? Thank you so much

If you're changing colors and you have two loose ends, I like to tie those together, then weave in the ends.

Hi Staci, how many hours do you knit in a day? Do professional knitters knit 8-10-15 hours in a single day? I love knitting, I could knit for days once I start a project but sitting in one place all day long is not sitting right with me (pun intended) Do you work on a schedule? I usually watch marathons of my favorite series while knitting, but sitting a whole week in front of the TV to make a sweater or more for a blanket makes me cringe and sore. LOL any tips on working smart and finish projects in a timely manner?

Don't sit and knit - so bad for your health!!! Sit one or two rows (or set a timer for 10 minutes - then STAND UP and knit for 10 minutes. Sitting for long periods of time is as bad for you as smoking!

Staci, I purchased the pattern and there was a link for video for calf increases and bind off. However, it linked to this video and no mention or demonstration of either technique. I am interested in the increases because I have been having issues with my socks being to tight on instep and work like to do longer socks. Am I missing something from the purchased pattern?

Just start knitting the toe...it doesn't take long, and you can get enough fabric to measure gauge in no time.

Yes - you can substitute the Sling Heel for this heel, with one change...you'll need to take each sock completely off the two at-a-time magic loop circular, work the heels, then slide the stitches back on to magic loop.

No - I always use a heavier yarn (usually worsted) for the provisional cast-on. Much easier to work with, and it doesn't make a difference in the end.

Which of your sock patterns would you recommend for a knitter that has experience at knitting cuff down socks but would love to learn how to knit a toe up, two at a time, magic loop sock. Appreciate you help and I love your videos. I always start here when learning a new technique.

If you have sock knitting experience, this pattern shouldn't be a huge leap. If you'd like to make an easier transition, I recommend this tutorial first: verypink.com/2015/03/11/toe-up-socks-using-german-short-rows/ That will teach you toe-up and German short rows, then two at-a-time and magic loop will be even easier.

I gotta say I like dpns better I guess call me a traditionalist but when I did the magic loop I would get ladders with dpns I don't, I also knit two socks at a time with dpns I have two sets And pretty much done with the two socks at the same time.

I did too lol. I took my normal sock pattern and her toe up German short rows video, made adjustments, and made some for Xmas. I just adjust my gauge (add so many stitches to be wider for men) and I'm good!

Hmm...you'd be hard pressed to find a print book for $8. My prices are in-line with other sock patterns, and my sock patterns have the extra value of video tutorials to go with them. Other patterns with video tutorials run upwards of $30 each. I do my best to provide great value for knitters.
