I agree with you~I almost exclusively knit all my socks using DK weight !! I learned using DK,,then switched to sock weight,and wasn't nearly as impressed. So I went back to DK,,which has always been my comfort zone anyway~gimme DK yarn and 3.75mm needles and I'm a happy,happy girl lol~!!🧶🥢

I finished these in two weeks! Fastest pair I ever made, and I think it’s the circular needles. It really does work up much faster on those needles. I noticed that my toes and heels using the recommended sizes for the DPN’s worked out a little looser so my next pair I will use slightly smaller DPN’s and that may make the gauge the same. I don’t see a way to post a picture of them, so let me know if there is because of course I took one! I made them for my spouse, and he has really wide feet and these came out perfect.

Martha Reed I mixed and matched a couple of techniques. I did Her German short row toe on DPNs in a contrasting color then switched to a 9' circular for the foot...went back to DPNs for the GSR heel and switched back to the 9' for the leg and cuff. I practiced the heel a couple times first before I broke out my project yarn. It was my first sock so the practice really helped. AND I worked on both of them at the same time. Meaning I worked one toe then worked the second toe. Worked the first foot then worked... Parking the other sock on DPNs. It's easier to make heels back to back instead of forgetting on your second sock... 😊 I'm making a cuff down pair now in fingering weight for my son! It's kind of addicting!

Hi Staci, thanks for this excellent tutorial! I'm a complete beginner to knitting socks (I'm well established knitting scarves, blankets and hats though!) and your tutorial covers a lot of my questions. However, when the video gets to the top of the cuff (where it's ribbed) you've switched to DPNs. My questions are: Why did you switch to DPNs for the end of the cuff? And is it necessary to do so? Sorry if this is a silly question - as I said, I'm a complete beginner and haven't even tried it yet!

It's only a personal preference of mine - I prefer to work rib and the BO on DPNs. You don't have to, you can stick with the circulars!

Hi Staci, my question is not about sock knitting but I'm hoping you can help me. I'm knitting a sweater for a baby and the pattern for shaping the neckline instructs me to knit both sides at once, add another ball of yarn, cast off some stitches, and decrease 1 stitch every row. It means to work one row of the shoulder, drop the yarn, pick up the second ball and work one row of the other shoulder. Turn your work and work back with the same yarn. Drop the yarn. Pick up the first ball and work the wrong side row. Turn. Repeat. You will be decreasing 1 stitch every row, 1st on one side, then on the other. The idea of doing both sides at once is so that they will look exactly the same (actually, mirror images). Knitters often do that with sleeves, or socks.

Grafting garter stitch is very easy. You do "knit, off, purl" on both the front needle and the back needle. Before you start, make sure that both tails are on the right-hand side. (Or check to see that purl bumps are facing you on both needles.)

This pattern, with the help of the video, is a pretty simple sock pattern that uses a short circular needle. Really, you can use short circulars on any sock pattern, it doesn't have to be written especially for those needles. Socks aren't normally a good project for beginners, but if you are a confident beginner, I'm sure you can knit this pattern.

how come when you first mention how to do the knit GSR you don't mention putting the yarn forward you just went straight to slipstitching the stitch but in the next round you say, put the yarn forward between the two stitches then slip stitch. i'm very confused! but will keep at it, thank you for your videos.

I'm probably wrong but I've never knit a sock yet but those I've watched didn't leave a hole for the heel they simply did German short rows and kept knitting and there weren't any holes left to sew, since you do it this way you must like it better but does it really matter?

My question is (I've never used DPN's or circular) I'm not sure why you switch from the circular's after you've been knitting for a bit above that heel set point, back to DPN's? It's all explained in the pattern - if I remember correctly, I demonstrate one technique used in the pattern on DPNs, only because it is easier to demonstrate on DPNs, but you can actually continue with the 9" circulars. I knit everything except the toes and heels on the little circs.

I haven't used DPNs before, but I was wondering why the top part of the sock (cuff side) needs to be split on two DPNs while doing the afterthought heel if they're just holding the stitches while you work the heel on the bottom part (toe side)?

+Elizabeth Thurmond - you can slip those stitches on to a stitch holder instead, if you like. But you'll eventually need to get them on a needle so you can work the Kitchener stitch.

Regarding picking up the stitches for the heel, since I’m left handed and find it much easier pick up from left to right, it looks like I’d go through the front of the stitch. Is that correct?

Ok so I am knitting socks BUT they are on 5mm needles in a 100% cotton #4 yarn. Now here's my issue and I hope you can help me. I have sock yarn, a pattern I'd like to use the yarn for HOWEVER, I cannot "get used" (lack of better words")to the 2.25mm or 2.75mm needles. Yes - knitting socks will be much more comfortable with wool or a wool blend. Cotton yarn has no "give" and it is tough on the hands. Beyond that, the more you use the smaller needles, the more familiar they will become.

I've been looking at other sock patterns as well and most say to subtract 10% length from foot - is this the number I use for your pattern too or do I subtract the amount in your pattern from the actual foot length? Thanks

Staci, I am knitting these for a friend, and knit the foot too long. I had finished the sock when I realized the mistake. Is there a way to remove the toe and rip out the length needed then reattach the toe? If so, can you provide me a resource to get specific instructions? If not, do you have any advice?

Oh no! There may be a resource out there that explains how to do it, but I'm not aware of it. If I was in your same position, I would rip back and reknit - or finish these socks and find someone with bigger feet to give them to, and start over on a new pair for the friend.

Yes - I'd probably put it in two rounds below, so that it doesn't get confused with the waste yarn you knit in to place the heel.

I'm using size 1 needles and fingering yarn. I am looking at your pattern and don't see a lot of what you are saying. I see nothing about slipping a stitch at the beginning of the row, or tugging on the yarn (which does nothing for me about making funny little stitches?) So is your pattern incomplete without the tutorial?

I don't recommend using worsted weight scrap yarn with fingering weight main yarn. Use DK or sport weight scrap yarn.

It may depend on the yarn - using a non-splitting worsted weight yarn is fine, it's what I always use.

+VeryPink Knits, splitting isn't the issue; it's the extra bulk and weight on the needles. It's just an issue with fingering weight. When I knit the pattern in DK weight, worsted waste yarn was fine.

I don't think I did say a needle size - if you're knitting socks, you'll want to use the size suggested in the pattern for the correct gauge. Most sock patterns (using fingering weight yarn) use a needle size from US 0 to US 2.75.

12 inch circulars are a good size for baby hats and sweater sleeves - really too long for socks. This pattern uses 9 inch circulars.
