Wow, finally someone who casts on like I do! Everywhere I knit, people look like they've never seen this type of cast on. I learned it from my mother and it's a lot easier than the cat's cradle cast on that most people do. Great thrum tutorial. Going to knit my own. Thanks!

I commented a couple of days ago that my thrums look more like blobs than "Vs." You very kindly promptly replied, but couldn't give me a real definitive answer. Well, I read through some other comments, and found the answer: Put the thrum on the needle in the usual way, pull it through, but then move the thrum yarn to the right before doing the regular knit stitch above. Then, when you pass the thrum over the knit stitch, it looks like a very nice "v." Every time!

These mittens look very warm and comfortable. I recently came across a technique called "twined knitting" which might seem simple at first but the pattern mentions "twisting over" and "under" and i had to stop right there because it was too complicated for me. So I would love to see a video and a simple pattern for this sometime in the future. Thank you.

Great tutorial! About two years ago, I made your thrummed mittens. But the thrums never felted to the wool mitten. Not the right wool?....So I've taken out all the thrums and found yarn which is described as good for felting. I'm re-making the mittens. My first pair was dark green with white thrums and they looked a bit childlike. I working with navy yarn this time and I dyed the thrums to a red-rust color. This navy and rust combo should be better for this 68 year old kid and maybe a bit more masculine. Looking forward to enjoying these in winter! Thanks again!
@verypinkknits4 жыл бұрын
I can't be sure, but if the thrums were white, that might explain it. Pure white (not natural cream color) wool has been bleached, and bleaching can inhibit the felting process.
@toomiepal4 жыл бұрын
@@verypinkknits The roving was a natural cream color, (now dyed). It felted to itself but never felted to the inside the wool mitten. Hopefully this new yarn will felt well. I'm really loving this new color combo and making the thrummed mittens again! Thanks again!

Have you heard about trigger mittens? the index finger is knitted free from the other fingers to operate a hunting rifle. They have a tradition in New Found land, Canada. It is a traditional way of knitting mittens and people are trying to preserve the patterns before they get forgotten. They have unique motifs on them as well.

I figured out what I was doing wrong. Hold the thrum to the right while working it in and to the left when working the stitch. I wasn't shifting it to the left and the yarn was pinning down the right side of the thrum.

Hello Staci, I ordered your pattern and now am assembling yarns and tools to make these thrummed mittens. I'm obsessed with double knitting and wonder if I can convert your pattern to double knitting and still add the thrums. (Also obsessed with lots of warmth!) I would knit the rib part in regular knitting and then change to double knitting which I think I can come up with a way of doing. (I've gone from double knitting to single knitting.) Any thoughts would be wonderful. Many thanks. Mike
@verypinkknits6 жыл бұрын
Double knitting in-the-round...hmm. I think you're potentially going to make a mitten that is so thick that it is almost like having basketballs at the ends of your wrists. I don't think I recommend it, but good luck if you give it a go!
@toomiepal6 жыл бұрын
@@verypinkknits Thanks for your feedback. I think I will make the mittens with the regular knitting according to your directions and then perhaps make a second pair in the future with double knitting if I feel I need the extra insulation. I've made several double knit hats in the round so that method won't be difficult. The challenge would be how to do the thrums with double knitting. I think I can figure that out with a swatch and experimentation. Thanks again for all your thoughts and best wishes! Mike

Hi I loved the video I have just started the thrums don’t come out in v is this because I continental knit? It is the only thing I see different
@verypinkknits4 жыл бұрын
No...that shouldn't make a difference. If you're working stockinette, and working one stitch in the thrum yarn, you should see a V. Are you possibly knitting your mitten inside-out, with the Vs on the inside?

Can I substitute KnitPicks Wool of the Andes for Wool of the Andes Superwash? I notice there is a greater variety of colour.
@verypinkknits3 жыл бұрын
Hmmm...the superwash yarn will likely require machine washing and drying to hold its shape. I'm not sure that the wool thrums will survive that! Or, it might help them felt up nicely. I honestly can't answer this question...I would stick to non-superwash wool to be safe.

I purchased the pattern. Is it possible to use worsted weight wool instead of bulky if I match the gauge?
@verypinkknits6 жыл бұрын
It's possible - but they won't turn out quite the same. I recommend getting gauge by holding the worsted yarn double-stranded.
@AO-hb1ki6 жыл бұрын
The pattern says "sm, M1L, K, M1R, sm" ... seems like it should be the opposite (Right then Left : M1R, K, M1L) to make a "V" for the thumb gusset. Do M1R's slant to the right when done?
@verypinkknits6 жыл бұрын
Either can be done, I chose what I chose because I like the look of this order, but you can do the opposite if you prefer. M1L slants left, M1R slants right.

Great video, but the written pattern is not worth buying. You said each row is written out clearly, they are not. I wasted $8CAD for links to these videos and 2 charts. You have to somehow merge the 2 charts together and make sure you're following the size you're making....so confusing. The line after the ribbing states "knit all stitches to stitch, M1...." what stitch??? without the video it wouldn't make sense. Even in the video you don't mention the sizes and following these charts is so confusing. I've been trying all morning to get the first increase and thrum row done after spending so much money on this yarn... Paid patterns are supposed to be written out very clearly
