+thefeminista1 From what I have read thrumming started in England in the 1700s? I'm from Newfoundland, so would love to claim it as part of my ancestry. :)
@thefeminista18 жыл бұрын
+Amanda Hartwick I did not know that, I am Canadian but don't live in Newfoundland, however have always heard these called 'Newfoundland Thrummed Mittens'. Thanks for clearing this up :)
@angelique82mon7 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the great video! I would just add that you have combed top not roving. Roving is a carder prep and it doesn't really have a staple length because the fibers go every which way. Just semantics really but kind of a pet peeve to many spinners lol. Your videos are still the first I go to when I'm looking at new techniques ❤️

Excellent video! Can ou thru in purl as well or only using the knit stitch?
@verypinkknits3 жыл бұрын
Doable, but maybe awkward...depending on whether you're knitting flat or in-the-round, a purl stitch might end up with the ends of the thrums on the outside (RS) of the fabric. This is because we hold the working yarn (in this case, the thrum) in the front of the work to purl.

28 years ago I bought a set of interchangeable needles. The point where the needle screws into the cable created a catch point that made a constant irritation. Have the new needles fixed this problem?

This was very helpful Thanks.
@brazilianjk8 жыл бұрын
So you may explain this in the mitten video, but do you typically add another layer of knitting or even fabric to act as a lining and hold the thrumming in? I feel like I would destroy it otherwise with nails and rings...
@verypinkknits8 жыл бұрын
+brazilianjk - no, no need for fabric backing. The reason we use 100% wool is so that the thrums felt to the knitted fabric. When you first put a thrummed mitten on your hand, you'll feel your fingers tangling with the individual thrums. But after wearing a short time, the thrums will become one with the mitten, creating a thick layer of insulation. In the video I demonstrate how I used steam to expedite the felting process.
@brazilianjk8 жыл бұрын
+VeryPink Knits thanks! I totally didn't think about that :)

Hi! I found a superhero hoodie pattern on ravelry and thought it would be fun to add some padding to places to simulate muscles. I was thinking of knitting up a swatch first and see how much I would have to space out the roving to get a nice felted raise. Now my question ; do you think it will be comfortable at all, and will the felted roving stay in the shape I pat them? Kind regards.
@annmorneau8 жыл бұрын
You mentioned that the staple was longer from one of the roving pieces you bought as opposed to the other. Is there a way to know how the roving will pull prior to purchasing a whole thing of roving? I think that was my problem with my first thrummed mittens...
@verypinkknits8 жыл бұрын
+Ann Morneau - staple length really should be listed on the website or yarn label (my opinion), and sometimes it is. So far I've found that it's kind of hit-or-miss with staple length, but I discovered that the Knit Picks Wool of the Andes roving was longer than others. If you're ever in doubt, it's worth it to contact the company and ask. I found the longer staple much, much easier to work with.
@annmorneau8 жыл бұрын
+VeryPink Knits Awesome, thanks for the tip regarding the knit picks roving - will have to try that out!
@mercedeslavignolle18284 жыл бұрын
Hi! I was wondering, what's the difference between this technique and just duplicate-stitching with roving after you're done with the pattern? Love your videos btw!
@verypinkknits4 жыл бұрын
You could duplicate stitch the thrums instead, and cut the yarn with each stitch to get the warm roving inside the mitt. But because the roving is very thick, the fabric won't look as flat because you'd be duplicate stitching over another thick stitch, making the thrum stitches double thick.
@CriaAndKiddFW6 жыл бұрын
Great video! I'm a new spinner and have a small variety of roving. I'm wondering what breed of fiber you're using for your thrums? ty

I understand the warmth factor for thrummed mitts. Does anyone have problems when you make these for children?
@smittenforfiction8 жыл бұрын
I've been meaning to make thrummed mittens for years. This past Winter I made felted mittens for my children and they love them. Can I add thrums to those mittens now? Or would it have to be done as they are being knit?

Stacy, I bought this set of needles because of your review. I’m not very happy with them! They DO snag the yarn!! Also, they don’t have a sharp enough tip for me to use them with all my knitting!! I’m on disability and saved up to buy these needles. I wish I hadn’t!
@verypinkknits5 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry you're unhappy with them...they shouldn't snag the yarn. I have used dozens of Knitter's Pride needles, and they do not (should not) ever snag. I recommend contacting the place you purchased them for a refund, or contacting the manufacturer for a replacement. As far as the sharpness, these aren't especially sharp needles. Knitter's Pride makes sharper ones, but the sharper ones do cost a bit more. The most economical needles they make with a sharp point are Zing. I'm surprised you were able to purchase these, as Knitter's Pride stopped making them a few years ago. Thinking about it, I'm concerned that you might have purchased something else, like a knockoff of the Knitter's Pride needles.

lol I was watching the thrummed mitten video and knitting my own mitten, and i was wondering why the heck my thrums were so wacky looking, and apparently I just need to go into *the row below*.
@lizkimber8 жыл бұрын
Roving is awesome stuff, be aware carded is not the same as roving! Roving is combed so all fibres going in parallel, carded sounds like it should do the same but actually it doesnt, you use two brushes and it ends up less in a straight line with more air in. All fleecey stuff makes great stuffing, you can actually use just washed locks for this, ok, you could use unwashed, but a lot of people dont like the smell or lanolin feel. Lanolin of course is waterproof! I keep meaning to try this with double knitting... Why? Because i am the ice queen and having it contained in knitting woukd allow it to felt better
@lizkimber8 жыл бұрын
My bad, I was thinking of between top and roving.. youd think carding it would brush it all into alignment, but it doesnt.

Have just finished the first of two thrumbed mittens, but many of the thrumbed stitches look more like "blobs" than nice "v"s. Any suggestions?
@verypinkknits5 жыл бұрын
It could be a few different things...maybe a tug will help them take shape? Or twisting the roving a bit tighter so it more resembles yarn than just "fluff"? Without seeing your work, those are my best guesses.
