I love that none of the family members even knows what country Marta is even from, but they each take turns saying that she is like family to them, it’s a great running gag in the movie.

I love how the cheating husband throws the baseball out the window after finding the letter is blank. Because he did that it went to the detective who then gave it to the dogs who then gave it to the wife. Since she knew where the ball was supposed to go she put it back and found the letter.

I too remembered what Harlan said about Ransom, “He plays life like it’s a game without consequences until you can no longer tell the difference between a stage prop and a real knife.” Brilliant foreshadowing! when Marta threw up on Ransom that was actually baby food mixed with water. Knowing that makes it easier to watch. The movie was an homage to Agatha Christie novels. Have you read Agatha Christie? Her works broke the rules of the mystery genre; she became known as The Queen of Crime. Her novels go from 1920-1970s. Actress who played Marta gave a phenomenal performance! Glad they cut away to her reaction to the suicide; the look of horror on her face was outstanding! Like Blanc said, Harlan’s demise was the result of “a tragedy of errors.”

One little detail I love is how Linda says Harlan said that the plots of his books just popped up fully formed in his head. Harlan later said “Ransom is just like me” then he thought up the escape plan for Marta instantly, while Ransom thought up the framing of the murder instantly

Fun fact - Harlan tells Marta he's never been able to beat her at Go, she jokes about how she plays...but the fact is, her strategy as seen on the board is an actual pro Go player strategy! There's a fun YT video about it, they really did their research!

Harlan was played by Christopher Plummer, I believe it was his last role before he passed away. Have you ever seen THE SOUND OF MUSIC? It's from the 1960s, and one of his more famous roles.

The accent is a conglomeration of Southern accents, but mostly Savannahian/Carolinian. Savannah, Georgia is in the extreme Eastern corner of Georgia, just across the border from South Carolina. While the Savannah accent is distinct, it is closer to a Carolinian than a Georgian accent.

Excellent reaction to a really good and fun-filled movie. So far, no reactor (that I have watched) noticed Harlan's portrait painting and how it changed slightly depending upon the events. At the end, that stoic painting had a slight grin.

Great reaction Cristy like always, i love this movie its not only Johnson (director) enjoying himself, but the entire cast is clearly having a blast. And how could they not? Johnson creates for them a narrative playground full of whip-smart dialogue, genre nostalgia, and with a biting sense of humor. There are some fun-facts about this movie, Joseph Gordon-Levitt makes a hidden cameo. The actor appeared in Johnson's earlier works including "Brick," "The Brothers Bloom," "The Interview," and "Star Wars: The Last Jedi," Johnson cast Gordon-Levitt as the voice on the program that Marta Cabrera (Ana de Armas)'s sister is watching in their kitchen. The ending scene, where Marta drinks out of a mug that says "My house, my rules, my coffee," wasn't planned until it happened. On a Podcast Johnson said, "It's funny that was it wasn't an accident, but it was kind of an accident. A happy accident. I knew I wanted her to like sip tea in the final shot, and I had had separately the idea of 'My house, my rules, my coffee,' as that first shot in the movie. Harlan's portrait wasn't ready when the cast started filming the movie. During his interview with, Johnson revealed that the portrait of Harlan wasn't ready by the time filming started. "When we started shooting the movie, we didn't have the painting. It wasn't done yet. We'd done a bunch of revisions to it, and we just didn't have artwork that we were happy with yet," And if you watch closely, Harlan's expression changes in his portrait once his murder is solved. In the beginning of the film, Thrombey appears straight-faced in the painting. Once the mystery is solved, his expression subtly changes, revealing a slight smirk. K Callan, who plays Great Nana Wanetta, is actually six years younger than Plummer, who plays her son Harlan. Some of the lines were changed to keep the film rated PG-13. In one scene, Hugh "Ransom" Drysdale (Chris Evans) tells his family members to "eat s---," a line that Johnson amended to avoid an R rating. "When I wrote it, it was 'F--- you.' He goes, 'F--- you, f--- you, f--- you, f--- YOU…' I decided right before we started shooting, I was like, 'You know what? I really want this movie to be PG-13,'" Johnson named the family members after 1970s rock stars. "In order to keep track of all the family members' names, I came up with a sort of cheat, sort of a code. I named them all after '70s rock stars," Johnson told. Keep up the amazing work.

Fantastic attention to detail by Ryan Johnson at 25:50, they've been drinking Grey Lady which is a craft beer (Cisco Brewers, New Bedford) from Massachusetts (which is the setting). Really places you in suburban, and very upscale Massachusetts. Also the newscaster/reporter is also a local Boston newscaster.

A lot of people make fun of Daniel Craig's accent in this or claim he was imitating Foghorn Leghorn but I've run across it before. I've only encountered it once but this patient I had about 25 years ago was from Georgia and sounded exactly like a female Benoit Blanc. I thought she putting me on but I later met a few of her children and they all spoke the same way. Very fun.

The sequel isn't nearly as good. It might seem that way at first, but given any thought at all it's just... stupid and irrational, and reliant on a cheat of a narrative. This on the other hand, is rewatchable even though you know the ending...or the middle.

I think it's less than that... 1/10th, *maybe*. It's fun enough if you turn your brain off and just enjoy the charismatic cast, I guess? But the mystery is just so fucking dumb, so many clues are wrong and stupid... but there's gonna be a 3rd, I can't imagine skipping 2 and watching 3; if you haven't seen 2, of course you are going to want to judge for yourself. "Brick" was more worthwhile, but that wasn't anywhere near as fun as Knives Out. (It was, like, 15 years earlier? So of course he got better, more talented in the meantime. But it's just too bad nobody will watch Brick first and then upgrade to Knives Out.)

Glad you enjoyed it, but I just couldn't get into it. Maybe there had been too much hype. Maybe there were too many major talents jockeying against one another for the best lines, thereby ensuring no one got any. It just seemed right from the beginning that it wasn't going to work. I would have much preferred one (maybe two at the most) big name attached to this picture, surrounded by up'n'comers most people would never have heard of. The story was reminiscent of an Agatha Christie story, too, which, let's be honest, aren't really terribly interesting or compelling either. Earl Derr Biggers wrote vastly more entertaining and original detective stories, and chances are you haven't heard of him (don't bother with the dreadful movies based on his works).
