It jukes you out that way. It makes you think the movie has switched genres, which allows it to seed its true whodunnit right under your nose, without you even realizing that's what they're doing. That's part of why it's so brilliant!

My favorite detail about this movie is the subplot involving the baseball. When Richard throws the ball out the window of Harlan's office, it triggers a series of events that ultimately leads to Linda finding the letter her father wrote. After it is thrown outside, it is found by Blanc during his outside investigation. He ends up throwing the baseball for the dog, who fetches it and brings it back inside. Towards the end of the movie, Linda takes the ball from the dog's mouth and returns it to its rightful spot on the desk in Harlan's office. Lo and behold, the letter is sitting right there on the desk. In other words, if Richard had never thrown the baseball through the window, Linda would have never found out that he was cheating on her.

The flashbacks for each person's story are filled with a lot of great touches to show they are unreliable narrators. When everybody tells their story they are sitting next to Harlan. It is clear how much they care about Marta from the get-go because none of them know where she is from, they all say different countries. They might perceive putting a plate down in their story but in Marta's you see they are handing it to her as if she's a server. This and the sequel, Glass Onion, are worth a couple watches to see all the nuances.

Apparently the hardest thing Chris Evans had to do when playing this character was the moment where he DOESN'T pet the dogs when they run up to him - and he actually has to act like he's annoyed by the dogs. Because in real life Chris adores dogs and automatically pets them.

It’s kind of like Indiana Jones in that the movies don’t really follow a continual plot and you don’t need to know much to follow each movie individually. Classic. Fun characters and a new and interesting plot for each movie. I’m hoping eventually there’s a third one. Glass Onion was even better than this one.

The whole thing with the baseball had nothing to do with the murder mystery: it was being set up to pay off Linda finding out about the affair at the end of the movie. She was only in Harlan’s office to put the ball back, and that’s when she found the note with the invisible ink. Had her husband not thrown the ball out the window near the beginning, she wouldn’t have gone in there and found the letter. It was done in such a way that you think the ball will play a part in solving the murder mystery, but it doesn’t.

What kills me are all the small things the Thrombey’s do that show they don’t even see Marta as an actual person: -Walt not even listening to Marta when she says his name on the phone -Linda giving her the lightest condescending tap of a hug -Richard instinctively handing her his empty plate like she’s a maid and not his father in laws fucking nurse. (21:44) -Joni somehow not even noticing Marta standing awkwardly in the corner of Harlan’s study. -Walt not mentioning Marta was the one that called attention to the time in his testimony -NONE OF THEM KNOWING WHAT COUNTRY SHES FROM, every one of them says something different. Rian Johnson really made every last member of this family except Harlan the worst. Also YES ABSOLUTELY REACT TO BABY DRIVER. AND REALLY ANY EDGAR WRIGHT FILM.

In the movie, you can see the realization on Harlan face the moment he knew Ransom was behind the mixing of medications. The movie stated that Harlan and Ransom played games. Harlan was not going to let Ransom pin it on Marta to get the inheritance after he cut him out. He was going to win at all costs, even if it meant he was going to die.

that's an excellent point! I was wondering if Harlan, as an author of crime literature, figured out what was happening and had full control over the incidents that unraveled after his death. When Marta was counting off the symptoms that should come up in the next 10 minutes leading up to his death, Harlan didn't show any of these. That was very noticable to me - he's extremely intelligent and I couldn't believe that in his calm state, he wouldn't notice that he felt physically fine even though he was supposed to be close to death

I love this movie (so much), so I thought I'd drop some tidbits about it y'all might not know if you (likely) aren't obsessing over this movie like me! 4:03 I'm in love with the entirety of the set, and the books in this shot are just another cool feature. Harlan's own books, if y'all didn't notice :) 7:53 Peep Meg's shirt LOL love it 8:15 Every time Blanc hits the key, he's telling the detectives to ask what time each family member arrived at the party 10:04 I'm pretty sure they only filmed this scene once, and man was it perfect. the lighting throughout this movie too is just so great 10:42 not really insight but these shots with the family photos helping to establish the groupings of the family members are cool, PLUS the carved elephants! ("Turn before the carved elephant. After the carved elephant. Beafterfore, the carved elephant.") 12:49 Rian Johnson (the director) commented that it's a pathetic throw too which is so funny to me!!! Supposed to show a petty little action! One that ultimately led to Linda finding out about the affair, because she finds the letter as she is putting the baseball back into place. 15:04 Quick note, but something y'all should look out for upon rewatch. These gorgeous eyelines for the camera, of placing the actors in a triangle/pyramid shape. Adds movement while also a sort of connectedness throughout the shot, and these triangle formations are very common throughout the film! 17:38 "There's so much of me in that kid" great line showing us how Ransom has that kind of mystery element to him, and thinks kind of like his grandfather does. The idea for a crazy murder scheme (and the way out of it) was thought up by him in a similar way to how Harlan thinks up his books. Something not easy for everyone, like as the detectives remark: "Cow and the shotgun? How do you come up with that?" 18:34 Rian Johnson really is pointing out to us another possibility to the situation we're watching. "If someone purposefully switched the medicine..." and yet I feel the end is still shocking. He does this a lot, which makes rewatching it feel so fun. Ransom's name is RANSOM for God's sake! 19:55 Marta climbs into the trick window in the same way that we see in the painting ON the window! 20:04 ONE OF MY FAV LINES "that an average cop will entirely dismiss you as a subject" because the detectives did completely dismiss Marta! 20:23 I don't think it was shown in this video, but there's a line where a family member says that "the ideas/plots [of his mystery books] would pop into Harlan's head fully formed," just like it did for him here! ugh so good 21:43 Don Johnson handing Marta the plate KILLS me-- especially because he came up with it himself. It's just so awful and shows exactly how Richard considers Marta "the help" rather than "a family member" as they all claim (and he even says at 9:02), just with one little gesture. 28:01 Originally the line was like "fuck you" or something but 'fuck' would have made the rating on the movie mature rather than pg-13 30:13 a line Jaedan Martell (Jacob's actor) came up with too. Snooty, racist, and perfect characterization. 31:09 THE BEST THING EVER. Subtle puns!!!! Marta needs to "SPILL THE BEANS!" either by telling the truth or literally vomiting beans. It took me a couple watches to notice and when I did I was like oh come on that's too perfect! 31:56 Peep Alan's assistant sleeping in the background because of just how long they've been arguing lol 38:01 Another cool shot-- Marta's hanging cross, and the reflection of the telephone pole looking like a cross in the glass. 40:29 Look at the table on the left side. They found a stature of two German shepherds for the set, like the two dogs the family has! SO GOOD 41:19 As Blanc uncovers what truly happened, his head fills the hole in the circle of knives. THE DONUT HOLE IN THE DONUT'S HOLE :D 42:50 Earlier Harlan said "why do men instinctually pull at loose threads on their parachutes" or something like that and here we can see that coming to fruition. If Harlan hadn't pulled at it, he would be alive. 43:20 Not shown in this video, but in the scene in the background you can see the jugs that you see used in the clip of burning down the examiner's office. 44:08 Great reason for the casting. We all trust Chris Evans, Captain America, right! Rian Johnson uses that to his advantage 100% 44:42 Another connection I LOVE! Fran yells: "I'm warning you!" Just like what Ransom said to Harlan in the study! There's a million and a half more things that I could talk about forever, like the floral patterns constantly throughout (tablecloths, clothes, curtains), to Blanc's little puns (the game's aFOOT (because he saw the blood on Marta's shoe). How they all say Marta is from a different country, and that they were each somehow "outvoted" on her invitation to Harlan's funeral. The metaphor of playing a game. The New Yorker article and tweet, the usage of apple devices, the Joseph Gordon-Levitt cameo. The set pieces that are references to other movies, the lighting and shot choices, the outfit choices. THE SCORE. I could write my honors thesis about this movie. Alas, poor Yorick, I don't have all day lmao. I hope some of these were interesting to y'all!

Thanks for the list, I didn't even notice the most of it after rewatching the movie. After going through your list I noticed that directly after the shot with the cross in 38:01 , you can also see in 38:03 , in the reflection of the window donut shaped objects hanging on the wall of a building while they are driving along and at the same time the detective does come up with his theory of the case and compares it with "a case with a hole in the middle, like a donut".

I think Ana de Armas and Christopher Plummer are just absolutely lovely as a pair. I've seen this movie so many times, and rewatching the scene of Marta's flashback is just so perfect. Like LOOK at Harlan's FACE! UGGHHHHH MY HEART! You can tell that he just loves her so much, as his friend and like a daughter. Watch the way he looks at her! And Marta's expressions of distraught throughout are just so moving. RIP Christopher Plummer.

Not because she is greeding but because she cannot do that to Marta. But with her entire family looking on Meg couldn't say anything. And she also didn't want them to overhear Marta say something either

Interesting, I interpreted her completely different. She was nice to Marta but she was also very much enjoying her allowance and there are some clues that she knew about her mother stealing from Harlan… I thought her phone call was supposed to be that aha moment. That she still values money over fairness/kindness/truth/… I get that she was pressured but after that scene she doesn’t really seem to honestly care about Marta but only keeping the money

There is do much detail that you won’t catch on first view. When Blanc first meets Marta on the porch, you see him look down at her shoe. When Marta goes to Ransoms place to show him the letter, you see the row of bottles with one missing, the one he used to fire bomb the ME office. In the flashback, they show the full row of bottles.

Besides what everyone here already stated in the comments (the immense amount of awesome details and such) I love this movie to bits because everytime I get chills when Blanc tells Marta that if Harlan had just listened to her he would still be alive and in all the chaos she still picked the right medicine because she is just THAT good of a nurse. It's like you said, the good person won. After all everyone in the movie tried to get money or "win" but she just tried to not end up in prison and was still a good person f.e. when she tells Blanc that nobody of them is a murderer in her eyes. It's so satisfying. Also you basically think you know how it went in the first 10 minutes but you as a viewer root for her it's so great!

I'm a dog person, one of our dogs is a small Border Collie who we bought as a puppy from a farmer who didn't need all the litter, her parents were working dogs. Our other dog is a big wolfdog that we helped rescue with our boat after he'd been abandoned on a riverbank, and he's the most chill rescue dog I've ever seen, really loving and non aggressive.

The thing with murder-mystery movies is that usually the biggest star is the murderer. But in this movie, they are all megastars. Captain America may have stood out a bit to some because he is "too much of a good boy" but then the so-called murderer is reveal. So, then the question becomes why and how, which is often more interesting than who.

This movie is filled with so many little details. It's incredible how literally everything is either foreshadowing or symbolic. My personal favourite moments are the ones where the family completely ignores everything about Marta because they're assholes. "Untrustworthy narrator" is probably one of the coolest twists if done right, and by god is it done tastefully in this movie.

I do think there are directors who are better at making their own original projects than they are at working with pre-existing IP. Original projects give them a level of freedom that properties like Star Wars can't really afford them because they're restricted by crafting a story that fits within the rules and formulas of those IPs. Some directors can find that to be a major hindrance to their storytelling ability.

It's revealing that the detective asks if anyone other than the family was there and Linda (JLC) includes Harlan's mother on that list. She doesn't consider Harlan's mother to be part of the family? Why, because she is old and her mind isn't what it used to be? Terrible.

i like meg, she actually has potential to be a good person, she just has selfish POS family whispering in her ear. she admires harlan not for what he's accomplished but because "he's a genuinely selfless person." she's the only one of the thrombys to actually be conflicted and before her mom made her afraid, she was for not fighting marta for the money, and then clearly feels shitty after their phone call. she also apologizes first thing after marta comes back. she's still a teenager (a privileged, sheltered teenager at that) and she's still learning who she should trust and listen to. she just needs to break from her family and i think she'd genuinely be set to fully commit to being the person she clearly wants to be

Knives Out is genuinely such an incredibly well thought out and amazing film. I truly was mind blown by the amount of twists and turns and just incredible writing when I first watched it. Chris Evans did incredible as Ransom, it's cool to see him tap into a "bad guy" side. Ana De Armas killed it too! Fun fact about the movie, Chris Evans loves dogs in real life - so having to act as if he hated dogs during that one scene sucked for him he said. 😂

One of my favorite things about this movie is upon rewatch, halfway through there’s heavy foreshadowing to who it was. Blanc says dogs are the best judge of character and as soon as Ransom shows up the dogs hate him

I love this movie. This is one of those movies that even if you know the ending, you can still watch over and over just because it is so good. None of the characters are caricatures and you genuinely root for Marta and sometimes even the other characters, because even though they are flawed, they still come off as real. Unfortunately, I can not say the same about Glass Onion. I know a lot of people like that movie but to me, the characters come off as one-dimensional and are not wholly developed. They are just box-ticking characters. The one person the audience is suppose to root for doesn't even show up until 3/4 of the movie is done. You don't actually get to know this person. Not to mention that the cast of Knives Out are all A list actors at the top of their game and the actors in G.O. are goodish but they are not in the same league. If you do watch G.O., I would put some time between the two movies. I think you would be disappointed if you watch G.O. close behind Knives Out. It pales in comparison. K.O. is an A+ movie whereas G.O. is a C, at best, in my opinion.
