Arturo could not play like this years back. This is why I respect him so much, he is never afraid to keep improving in other areas. His sound and linear concept here are streets ahead of what they used to be. I think many a seasoned jazz musician would fail a blindfold test on his playing here. Just beautiful.

@MaelstromD3
@MaelstromD3 2 жыл бұрын
Although I'd agree that his tone and approach here is different than on most of his recordings, he has definitely been capable of playing like this since before he came to the mainland. He is a master of countless trumpet styles; his 2004 "Trumpet Evolution" release demonstrated that. He, like most of the masters, plays however he chooses to play. I've attended many of his live concerts during the last 3 decades, and his versatility and virtuosity are even more on display on those occasions than when you hear him on records. In short, this recording would certainly fool many as to who is playing horn, but he could definitely play like this "years back."
@ouruhuru
@ouruhuru 2 жыл бұрын
@@MaelstromD3 That's fair. Perhaps saying "he would have been less likely to play like this years back" would have been a better choice of words.
@MaelstromD3
@MaelstromD3 2 жыл бұрын
@@ouruhuru agreed. I think when he 1st arrived here in the states, he was determined to "outplay" all other musicians, especially other trumpeters. In my opinion, this is why he often got into these high-note battles with other horn players; because very few could compete with him in that range. It was like he was competing with them more than having a pure focus on the art of playing great music. In contrast, this clip shows him truly playing the music with the most artful and utmost integrity. It is also a delight to see him enjoying the other solos so much.

Zane Musa snapped me out of my usual bebop and swing sound I dig. Dig, old fashioned hip, Zane's totally original style; style that's original just like the Hines, Waller, Tatum, Monk, Hancock, Brubeck, Corea, and very few others on the keys are originals. Zane, you're a true artist. Jazz: that's my breakfast, lunch, supper, and in between.

Arturo has already worked with Michael Brecker (in his prime times) several times, so he has a great eye for choosing a Sax player. Zane Musa... A very sad person. He never won a monk competition, and he wasn't a famous player in New York, home of jazz, but he could be the best. He did a really great performance. In terms of jazz linguistics, he was a completed musician, so there was nothing more to learn, and in terms of energy, he worked with Arturo, who was the most energetic jazz musician, so the only thing left to do was to succeed.. Doug Skinner ..Yes, he's been listening to Brubeck and he does have a great future (I hope) -- I thought Zane also had a fantastic future -- that was a real tragedy -- that fatal accident he had in Florida. That still bothers me I didn't even know the guy -- to lose a great talent like that is downright depressing. He was an "LA" boy and I'm partial to that crowd since I'm from there myself. If there's a Heaven (and I think there is) he's entertaining lots of people right now.

the way i think of music is that music is all about telling a story. if you have the best story in your heart but not the ability to communicate it properly, then how would one know that your story is worth listening to. that's why technical work-outs are so important. I work on my technicality so i don't let it hinder my Musicality. like learning a language. learning the alphabet and "the dog is happy" or "there goes spot" leads to being able to tell a story

TheDkjayjay nope, he's just using really warm air and thinking Dark. The coating of the trumpet doesn't change anything that drastic. (Source - am a trumpet player, and have owned gold, silver, matte gold, matte silver, you name it, horns)

I am loving Arturo's sound here. Beautifully dark and he's playing into a fairly bright mic at that. I saw the comment about cliche bebop lines, and I understand a little where that opinion might come from, but he certainly throws down a great coda. I think the whole performance was well-crafted. He was the first solo out of the gate, and given the style of his collaborators, I think he set them up perfectly. I think one of the best roles a trumpet can play, especially in a two horn setting, is to be the mellow voice and to let the sax take the busier role. If you judge it as an overall performance, it's nicely off-the-cuff and yet feels very deliberate in pace. I never followed Zand and Mahesh--wow I agree about the comments on them both. Great players, and Mahesh in particular, the way he's encapsulating so many influences and mashing them up. I enjoyed it.

To Alex Villa. He didn't "mess up" at 7:30, he was dropping a slow valve in a faster time signature: it's hard to catch it: but, listen again. a cool trick that "sachmo" (Louis Armstrong) came up with.

wow. I think often because a lot of the greats are now dead or no longer play, we think of masters as always being in the past.. but that sax solo.. that piano solo... these are performances as good as it gets in my opinion. timeless.

Bible says, a word aptly spoken in due time is medicine to the soul. This music right here did just that. It came right on time. It took me out of my spirit and placed me in another spectral dimension (what ya expect, I'm a New Yorker stuck in South Jersey). Yeah man, I can dig it. That sax.... wow!!!! On point! Loved the piano solo too. THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is not a Summit trumpet, but I did add the cross, saturn water keys and pinky hook/rest. Arturo does play on a Summit Midnight as well as a Wild Thing. He has many horns so you might see him playing any brand or model depending on what tone he wants to achieve. I have never heard a recording of him (on any horn) that didn't touch me in a personal way...that's true musicality!
