You win some, you loose some, but to fail to pick this horrible, cheap DMS in competition, well... ouch! Still I hope you can understand why I’ve been quiet on the comments recently as I’ve been having fun in the Netherlands at LockCon again :-)

Sorry Mr. Ash -- I'm sure the trip was well worth it in all the folks you meet. I went to DEF CON in "Lost Wages" (Las Vegas) just in last August and ran into LPL (Harry) at the TOOOL Lock Picking Village. That's the great part about these TOOOL events -- it's all about the great folks you meet that you only knew via the Internet, but now Face to Face -- Awesome.

It's really hard to pick when nervous. It tends to destroy fine motor skills. Hope you had a great time.
@heatshield5 жыл бұрын
Great insight. You got that right. Once had to pick my own front door, which I've practiced so many times I can do it in my sleep in 15 seconds. The one time I had to get in immediately, it took over a minute. Same with a lot of things. Practice shooting for decades, and the one time I had to draw on someone, I didn't realize I forgot the safety until I went to put it back to safe before tucking it away again. Still safe. Big learning experience that day. Only thing I've noticed that works opposite for me is driving or riding. Something happens and a strong focus takes over. It's like I can see into the future a couple seconds in slow motion.

The human being is a strange creature. Put's itself in torturous situations and afterwards says "I loved it"!!! 🤣 On another note when spp a cheap Chinese lock they feel so unpredictable. You put your short hook in one and it almost immediately surrenders. You pick up another one and nothing in there feels like it is doing what it ought too. "Ahhh don't you just love locksport"!

Can you use any non-destructive technique to open the locks? It seems that raking is often looked down on in locksport.
@LockNoob5 жыл бұрын
I don’t think it’s looked down on, but most of us find more pleasure in doing a fully controlled pick :-)
@demopem5 жыл бұрын
I'm not surprised. I have a bunch of cheap padlocks that I sometimes pick (or rake) instantly, and some other days they seem to be impossible, while I have much better locks that I can pick consistently over and over again. Tighter tolerances make much more distinct feedback.

I completely agree with you :-)

Hi Lock Noob, I’m only new to your videos, but they are very good and I’ve learnt quite a bit from them already. I have a question for you if you have a moment, I’ve picked open most locks around my house already so have to now buy some fortunately or unfortunately! I was looking at the Sparrows Revolver Cylinder practice lock but do you have any other recommendations for something you think I should look at? Thank you!

I'd call it - bad locks and flat bittings. I had few standard pins locks that I failed miserably , so much miserably by SPP-ing. Then , I took TOK tensioner and snake rake and they "miracolusly" opened ! They were annoying me for nearly 2 years , until I salvaged one of them to see why they have zero feedback or acting like spools , and all I saw was all standard pins and very bad bitting. How frustrating !

This is something that puzzles me as a beginner. I find I have a much higher success rate with single pin picking than with raking and I have no idea why. I try several different rakes and movements but nothing seems to take.

welcome back. I have a couple of really good, older spool pinned locks, which I can pick easily. I have 2 old Sargent standard pinned locks, which still defy picking to me... work perfectly with the keys. Go figure.
@LockNoob5 жыл бұрын
Possibly a broken spring in the Sargent :-)
@RAkers-tu1ey5 жыл бұрын
@@LockNoob Thad did happen to me once on another lock, but here's a funny story: I became so frustrated with a 5 pin Sargent that I drilled it out, and pulled the pins and springs - all perfect. So, I threaded plugs, and re-installed all of the stuff. Tested with the key, (perfect) and - I still can't pick it. So I pulled one set of pins, still cant pick it - pulled a second set of pins, Viola! I can successfully pick a 3 pin Sargent. Now I am the proud owner of a Sargent practice lock.

Ok, I try to avoid leaving multiple comment but I gave it a go. Randomly picked out: 5 pin Asec 6 pin Gege 5 pin Yale 6 pin 1* Yale 6 pin Era And...unsurprisingly for my skill level the Gege kicked my butt. Went back after and took me over 10 minutes to get through. I didn’t expect the 5 pin Yale to take longer than 5 minutes though and I threw my hands up in frustration when the timer went off for that one. The other 3 I got through within the 5 minutes. 1* was pretty close to the full 5 minutes though. In summary, I actually had a lot of fun and I wholeheartedly endorse giving this a go.

Well done in the comp though buddy. Wish I could pop over and have a bash, but would probably fail at 5.......
