Knott’s Bear-y Tales is Open! Better Than Toy Story Mania?

Knott’s Berry Farm is gearing up for their grand reopening on May 21, and we attended a Annual Passholder preview of their new ride Knott’s Bear-y Tales: Return To The Fair! This Toy Story Midway Mania-style interactive shooter dark ride is a callback to the classic Knotts Beary Tales attraction that was at the park in the 1970’s and 1980’s. Without the animatronics, does it recapture the magic?
We also check out the Boysenberry Factory Store to see what they have been cooking, including a ton of Knotts Beary Tales t-shirts, pins and stuffed animals. The store also features a large selection of merchandise celebrating some of the closed attractions in Knott's 100 year history.
And finally we got to try Bumble Berry’s Boysenberry Pie, a new personal sized Boysenberry Pie - how does it compare to Mrs. Knotts famous dessert? You’ll have to find out!

Fun fact: they were going to bring back the volcano in the renovation of the Mrs. Knott’s Chicken dinner on the outside portion, but the plans got scraped and they went for a more modern renovation for the chicken dinner. The original concept art showed many other hidden nods to past attractions as well, it’s in their Knott’s Preserved: 100th Anniversary Edition book that you can buy in the park!

We were a team working on it (we were working for the Triotech Company in Montreal) and for my part I worked on the animated concept in the dark ride, the interactive film with which you shoot to target the pies, I also worked on a lot of poster and item that there is at the entrance of the dark ride, where you make the queue, the genealogical tree, the wanted poster also found in the teeshirt, and even the footprint on the ground: ) it's really great to see all this, because of the covid we couldn't go there, we only got pictures, and it's much better to see it in real with people having fun in it :) we were a big team to work on this park, besides the concept artists there were many 3D artists who modeled and animated everything, as well as engineers who designed the technology in the gun, not to mention all the people who remotely and on site had to do the staging and do things in real, with the covid it was a real challenge :) thanks to you guys ! The Whacky Soap Box Racer, in my opinion, was one of the best rides there. It was so fun ride that we used to go on it several times in a row. You could lean into every turn and it felt like it made a difference that you could possible win. Expedition Theme Park did a video on it as well as the Haunted Shack. I'm sorry I missed you guys there but I was only able to go for a couple of hours. I'm glad you had fun. Great Video!

You’re right Peter, there was just one pie thief character in the original ride. I love the retro merch, but I’m a little surprised they don’t have the Motorcycle Chase instead of the Soapbox Racers. I suppose the Soapbox version of the ride is more well known. But the motorcycles were a bit more exciting (and dangerous) because you rode on top of them rather than safely inside a “box”. Both fun though.

I have rode the OG *Bear-y Tales, The Soap Box Debry, went to The Haunted Shack;* that was in 1985. Surprised they did not include the *Kingdom of the Dinosaurs* in the shop because that replaced Bear-y Tales. I rode that one, too. That was the last time I was at KBF. BTW back in the day; Mrs. Knott's Fried Chicken Dinner was one of the best places to eat. I want to go back to DL, KBF, and US; it has been forever going to those parks. But through your eyes I can be there in spirit. Thank you.

Soapbox Racers was my faaaaaaavorite!!! I don’t remember Beary Tales, but I remember Kingdom of the Dinosaurs!! Knott’s back then didn’t have a lot of roller coasters, aside from Montezuma’s Revenge. Calico Ghost Town (out in the desert) had the same Haunted Shack that was at Knott’s; I think they were owned by the same people back in the 80s and 90s.
