What do you do if the knots wind up being messy cuz the hair is layered and dry and just sadness?

You can use a pomade or wax as you section & braid the hair. I have very bleached hair with ‘layers’ aka breakage, and when I go to a braid bar they get it under control with those. If you want something that doesn’t have much movement, you can run gel through the hair before you start.
