Set another 5 gal bucket half way down the run so you have one to change real quick while cutting that’s what we do. Works good. Bucket is only way to go for sure. Makes clean up so much easier. Great video.

Thanks man! That’s why we use the bucket, then we can just empty into the dump bin and all the sawdust isn’t just all piling up at our feet, no shoveling or raking, and it’s just super easy 👍🏼 Pretty simple too!

You were dumping the saw dust into a container. What do you do with all the sawdust? Compost? Spread it out in the woods. Just wondering if there's a practical use for sawdust. Also, when you stated you're sawing 6 inch thickness I thought, "wow, that's gonna be heavy and how many guys to move it". But then you brought out the skid steer, sooooooo phew, thank goodness!

We just pile up the sawdust in the logyard and yes the 6" thick slabs this big are pretty heavy for sure!

Is monitoring blade tension an issue?

On the LT15 models there is really no way to monitor the blade tension, because it uses a rubber type spring for the tension you can really just set it and see how it does, we did however tension ours more than what WoodMizer recommends, we no longer have this mill and all of our current mills have a hydraulic tensioner system so we can see what is happening with it during the cut and we do tend to like that much more! 👍

It all gets pushed up into a big pile with the bark scraps... we have a big pile of chips from chipping our slash pile once in a while as well

Yah, lots of nice redwoods out here on the lest coast lol... It's one of my favorite woods to work with out here... Really have no complaints about any of our WoodMizers! They really are great saws when you use each of them as intended... I have never heard of a Thomas saw out this way, but I am sure there are lots of mill mfg's that are not really common here out west...

Thanks for the video. I’m considering the same mill to purchase. I had a Cooks mp32 and it seemed a lot beefier and The Cooks come from blade background. My question is about blade drift and stability. Looked good in the video but wondering if you get much dip or rise as your cutting? Thanks!

Glad you liked the video! As far as blade drift, as long as a blade is tensioned correctly, that is usually more a product of a dull blade or incorrect profile for a given type of wood, if you keep sharp blades on the mill and its being run how its happy, it should cut pretty straight. Very rarely do we get dips and rises in our cuts 👍

Hello I just ordered the same mill LT15 Wide diesel. Should be here in about 4 weeks. I was told by most the diesel is a waste of money but I went with it anyway! Love your videos action the whole time! Did your bucket hang off the sawdust shoot when you got the mill or did you get different bolts to hang the handle from? What’s your opinion on perfect height from the ground to the bottom of the stock adjustable log bed feet. I am building my foundation now. I see yours is sitting on some type of beam. My current plan is the base the log bed feet sit on will be about 12” off the dirt.

Nice! Can't go wrong with a diesel, it will run forever and uses very little fuel!!! We added some bolts to hold the bucket! As far as the perfect height, it's really all a matter of how you like it, we just used some beams we already had laying around, mostly we did it so we can drag it around the log yard when we need to!

This mill was an LT15 Wide with the Kohler Diesel engine... and for the most part we were pretty happy with it while we had it... But it has since moved onto another owner 👍

Thanks man! No issues with sawdust going right into your boots! Even without the bucket it's pretty hard to get it in your boots! We have multiple WoodMizer's and that isn't an issue unless you just let it pile up really high. The bucket just makes it so there is no shoveling or raking, we just empty the bucket out with each pass into a dump bin, easy peasy! And yes we went with the diesel engine on this one and never looked back 😃 it does pretty well and is not a gas guzzler at all... It will run for a long time on a tank of fuel for sure... I always tell people it would be pretty hard to be disappointed with a WoodMizer unless you just flat out pick the wrong model for what you are wanting to do with it... What are you wanting to cut with a sawmill?

KnottHead Custom Sawing & FabWorx I guess in the grand scheme of things I’m tired of cutting up perfectly good wood for the fire pit. I would assume cut the pines and spruces up for lumber and the better looking hardwoods for finish work. I don’t know how well one of these mills work and thought I would check out a video. Lt15 start, go, and, wide are the ones I’m looking into. I certainly would hate to get a start and need a wide. The reason I say wide is not only the size but maybe it has a little umph for handling tougher wood. (Get the diesel) I plan on clearing some land and use the trees for milling into it’s appropriate category. This could turn into years of work and use of the sawmill! Would you have any advice on which to choose from your experience? I have experience with cabinets and cabinet shop work.

These LT15 Wide sawmills are pretty good little mills! As far as the manual feed vs power feed? I can't really speak too much about the manual feed because we pretty much put the power feed on as soon as we got it... Pretty much all of our milling equipment that can have power feed on it does, we pretty much mill daily so it was a no brainer for us 👍

@@KnottHeadCustomSawingFabWorx That's the mill I need, an LT15 WIDE, Diesel, Power feed and enough bed to cut 30' or more. I have 10 acres in WV where I want to build a true log home entirely from the wood on the property. Up on the hill there are some big tree. The Tulip Poplar is what I'm after first. The longer the bed, the longer my home will be.

Nice Video! I'm in the market for a sawmill also. How do you like your lt15 wide diesel? We have tractors with forks so I'm wondering if the hydraulics are worth it... also, are you glad you spent the extra on the diesel? Is it worth the extra cost? Any issues with the rope drive system? Thanks!!

We really liked having the diesel both for the longevity & ease of maintenance and also the fact that it really sips fuel thru the sawing day rather than drink it like a gasser lol... As far as the lack of hydraulics go, we used this mill only for cutting slabs and cookies, so we never had a need or want for any hydraulics on it, we have other machines for when we need to manipulate logs with hydraulics... It's not really a machine that is geared at high production dimendional lumber like and LT40, LT50 or LT70... An the rope drive system worked just fine as long as you keep the rope tight, however, we did swap our rope out with a chain feed setup by the time we sold this unit.

I couldn’t agree more Galan! Some of the nicest slabs we mill come from some of the crappiest logs we get! That’s why we just line them up to mill them 👍🏼 and keep making beautiful slabs!!! We mill for shape and figure not for graded lumber, however we feel it will look best...

Suggest you push in only the Wood Mizer’s key so that, during operation, there is so much contact with other kes and rings that their surfaces wear until they don’t fit. Also, please take your video at real speed sometimes.
