Connective tissues maintain the structure and the form of the body.
They protect our organs, store energy and move nutrients.
They include several types of fibrous tissues that vary in density.
One of the most find tissues in the body
They are made of cells, fibers, extracellular matrix.
Cartilage:
Provides padding between bones
Reduces friction at joints
Act as shock absorbers
Chondrocyte are the cells that form the cartilage and helps in endochondral ossification
Endochondral ossification: the process of bone formation and fracture healing of bones.
Cartilage lacks blood supply. The main reason any injury to cartilage takes a long time to heal.
The movement of waste and nutrition is through diffusion.
Cartilage has no nerve innervation or stimulus. Hence there is no sensation when it is injured.
It contains a high amount of chondroitin (which occurs naturally in our body) that provides elasticity and flexibility to it.
Cartilage disorders (Osteoarthritis)
In the joints that are under high stress, the cartilage in between is subjected to wear and tear, and with time it starts thinning out.
Results in decreased movement, pain, and inflammation.
Ligament:
The elastic band of tissues (made of collagen) that connect bone to bone.
Prevents bones from dislocating and maintains stability in the body.
Allow bones to move in the desired direction.
They look like ropes or cords.
We have over 900 ligaments in our body and most of them are located in the arms and legs.
Ligament disorders:
Ligament injuries are common in:
Ankle, Knee, wrist, back, or neck
Tendon:
The elastic band of tissues (made of collagen) that connect muscle to bone
Our body contains around 4000 tendons from head to toe.
They are flexible and strong.
The Achilles tendon (largest tendon) connects the calf muscle with the ankle bone.
When you squeeze or contract your muscle, the tendon attached to the bone pulls it and the body movement starts.
They work like a lever when your muscles contract and expand.
Tendon disorders:
Tendon disorders are more common with age.
overuse due to repetitive activities.
Tendons become thinner with time, less blood flow makes them weaker.
