Funny, but keep in mind media of 1941. It was mainly by newspapers and magazines, and some by radio. At that time, STI’s were just not talked about. Nothing related to sex was spoken of in public, therefore, there were no public service announcements in what we’d now call the MSM. Films like this one would be shown to carefully selected audiences and pamphlets would be available only in places such as public clinics, campuses, and on military bases? Doctors would give them out to selected patients. You’d never find a stack of them in the waiting room to help yourself. Children and younger teens were not given them as it was assumed they were still innocent, didn’t even know the basic “facts of life.” (An exception would be farm kids who’d no doubt figured things out by seeing animals, but the moraes of the time were such that decent people didn’t mention such things outside of private situations. No sex ed in schools!) As for using a “rubber,” (condom, really made of rubber!), or other forms of protection, that was strictly limited to adults in specific settings--like the doctor’s office. Many people were too embarrassed to consult their family doctor, so public clinics were really important in keeping STI’s under control.

Well, the doc is right! Looking clean doesn’t mean anything. Use a “rubber” or abstain. Obviously, the poor guys in this film must have all been fairly naive. If you go to a “home of consignation” you’re going there to have sex! Stupid to not bring some rubbers along! These days, the nice mammy at the door would be handing them out as you enter, and the ladies in the parlor would have a supply, also.

It’s still good to get checked and know for sure! Today’s treatments are so much easier. BTW, they didn’t wear gloves and nurses really did reply, “Yes, doctor.” They taught it in nursing school. The doctor-nurse relationship was like that of a recruit to a drill instructor, minus the yelling.

Treated with salvarsan a derivative of arsenic, bismuth, and mercury via injection. Treatment obviously had many bad side effects and took up to two years. There used to be a joke about syphlitics sitting on pile (hemorrhoid) cushions because you’d get a really sore butt! Back in the 1930’s, my mother’s boss always sat on a pile cushion, and would leave the office regularly for “bureau meetings.” Poor fellow was the “butt” of many jokes among the clerks and secretaries! All kidding aside, syphilis was and still is no joke if it goes untreated.

Heavy metal compounds. Arsenic, mercury and bismuth in different forms and combinations. Especially arsphenamine, an arsenic compound, was quite effective. That is what the suicide scene eludes to. Those actually did work, but had severe side effects. When overdosed it would destroy nerves. Penicilin was introduced in 1943, making treatment expensive but very effective. The cost ment that heavy metal preparations were still used untill the mid 1950's in some countries. Think of it as chemo therapy.

Ah, yes. The religious sermon! Not terribly effective at keeping a herd of young stallions in the barn. 🐎 🐎 🐎 No, they shouldn’t be sowing their wild oats, but throwing Bible verses at them as they enter the brothel isn’t going to work, barring a miracle. Not that God can’t perform a miracle, but don’t count on it. Handing out religious pamphlets or tracts to people you’ve judged to be sinners isn’t terribly effective. At least that’s my experience. I know. I used to go to a NYC church that passed out tracts on Saturdays. The sidewalk for an entire block would be paved with them, mostly unread, unopened. I used to stay or show up at 6:00 pm with a broom, dustpan, and large bag to pick them up. The merchants used to complain that they’d find them all over their stores, dropped by people who had no interest, which was the vast majority. The church wouldn’t pick them up, which to me, was a bad witness. Christians should be shining examples of good citizenship, not people who litter the streets! I was there for almost three years and never once did anyone show up in church as a result of getting a tract. It was also a poor use of money to leave them on the ground for city workers to pick up! I used to sort them out, rebundle the good and toss out those that were ripped, dirty, or balled up. I’d return them to church on Sunday and if anyone noticed, it’d be news to me.
