So Magic Johnson woke up one morning and decided to cold call Howard Schultz?? That's not at all what happened and if it had been, still not that impressive. Magic can easily get can audience with anyone in the world. What really happened is Starbucks contacted Magics people and said, "we'd like to grow our underperforming stores/markets in urban areas and we have an idea on how to accomplish this, by partnering with Magic. He won't have to invest any of his own capital and he'll receive a portion of profits. Is this something Mr Johnson would be interested in???"

Aviation So why would they call magic Johnson of all people? This happened in 1998. Magic was not in the NBA and wasn’t at the height of his popularity. There were probably 50 other guys they could have called before magic. Magic Johnson had an idea and he leveraged his celebrity and name recognition and struck a deal. You seem bothered by his success and want to detract from it.

You hit the nail on the head but I don't think they called magic, I think Magic contacted them, but got some distribution rights where he didn't have to put any money down if the stores are performing. 125 is a lot of stores and credit to the man. But lets face it, nobody want's to hear the true story, they like the end result.

Come on man. He didn't build 125 Starbucks. That's an established brand with procedures and systems tested and proven since the 70's. All he did was change the music and some food choices. Something anyone could do in 30 minutes. Big deal. Now if he created a new restaurant/cafe brand from the ground up, then that's newsworthy.
