Hey! if you mentioned bernadette banner, ill say a lot of the female "history" youtubers do seem to cover material history, especially fashion history a lot. Abby Cox was a reenactor, also does fashion history videos. SnappyDragon covers jewish fashion history. NotYourMommasHistory posted black reenactor videos (sadly hasn't posted in a year). But yes, there is a big focus on material history (dress, hairstyles, food) probably because women's history hasn't been as recorded except via material history. Thank you so much for this -- i think a lot of your political trajectory has taken a similar bent than mine and seeing you guys grow as i have has been very encouraging. Still very sad the left is so bad at communication or coalescing to compromise (the right has lots of kooks and they don't let that embarrass them or dilute them!), but we'll see. I feel as a country we have made huge strides in some aspects in my 20 years being politically involved. The near-total acceptance on marijuana and gay marriage is something I thought unimaginable as a young antiwar libertarian (now more left-lib/soc-dem/anarchist bend) in 2002. Even though there is a lot to be cynical in the lack of progress and reactionary forces I think there is a lot to be hopeful about, too. Things will probably get worse, but they will also get better, I think. Just on different axes.

I'm a big fan of Not Your Momma's History, but like you said she hasn't posted in so long. It's funny, one of my most popular videos is about the history of high heels. :) And yeah it does sound we've evolved similarly politically!

@@iammrbeat It blows my mind that between the two of you, neither of you came up with the name Kathy Joseph. She is the TOP history KZbinr in my book. At least for the niche that she covers. And because the best of KZbin is better than anything else out there, this means that Kathy Joseph is the BEST HISTORIAN in the world. To me. For her stuff. And neither of you know about her?! Very strange.

@@iammrbeat The strange has gotten even stranger. I have done a thorough search for such a video, where you appear on Kathy's channel. I cannot find it. I've searched her channel. I have searched all of KZbin. I have searched the entire internet... Nothing. Now it is possible that the video was made and posted, and then taken down. But I cannot think of a reason why such a video would be switched to private. If I were to take a guess as to what has happened here, I would see it to be possible that you are thinking of some other KZbinr. Not Kathy Joseph. Because if you DID talk to her, then she would have made the same kind of strong impression on you that she has on me, and many thousands of others. As I have indicated, she is AMAZING. Not a person to be easily forgotten. And if anyone asked me to name a history KZbinr who is female, she would be THE FIRST person I would shout out. You _and_ KB failing to come up with her name, and pointing other lost souls over to her channel is a major opportunity lost. For anyone who does know of the existence of a Kathy Joseph Meets Mr Beat video, I would be very grateful for a link, or to be pointed in a warmer direction.

I know it’s not y’all’s subject, but I would love to hear an open forum with y’all and a bunch of other EduTubers on the homelessness situation in America. This personally affected me because about 7 years ago I was homeless hitchhiking around the Midwest and eventually making my way to PA. I eventually had to join the army to escape my situation after a year of homelessness, but the struggle is real for millions of people like myself. I think if you were to pull some larger KZbinrs into a discussion on that, perhaps a serious impact could be made. Just a thought. Also, love the video so far. I’m a huge fan. I love hearing both of y’all mention KZbin channels that I also watch. NotJustBikes is also one of my favorites. Just goes to show the power of the algorithm to bring people together

I've had to watch this video in stages because of the length, but I was so excited when I saw both of you were talking together!! Speaking of Handmaid's Tale, I think it would be really cool to see one or both of you break down the real life events that inspired the book and show. Margaret Atwood has said there was a lot in the book that had already happened somewhere in the world (and this was in the mid-1980's), which I'm sure contributes to KB's feeling of "This could happen here."

So I had to stop mid playthrough to address these 2 points that I feel pretty strongly about. Knowing Better makes the comment about how surprising it is that many history channels are right leaning (possibly far right even). This also shocked me when I discovered this because I was under the impression that someone with an understanding of the past and history should also see how destructive the aristocracy, patricians, the wealthy noble elites could be to societies that rise and fall through time. In my mind, the past is romanticized to a few great men who did great things, and anyone who daydreams about past civilizations does so with the notion that they'd be more than a simple plebian, and completely unaware of how poor living conditions could actually be. My limited armchair historian knowledge seems to show many examples of conservatism leading to the fall of empires. My next thought was when Mr. Beat brought up the topic of populists. I had been binge watching an awesome Roman republic series (Historia Civilis is great!) On loop awhile back and was intrigued by how similar our legal and political systems have been influenced by the western Roman empire. Political donations are considered "free speech rights," that's called a bribe (sorry my brain devolved into less coherent thoughts I didn't have time to organize better.)

From talking about how you all would've been sargon or jordan peterson fans as youth, I find that so spot on to my experience, but apparently I have somehow, in my 20s gone through this sort of transformation that KB went through, where you start to realize this compassion for your fellow humans, and more open to the plight of people that are outside your experience. I think maybe what creates conservatism is the lack of this. Whether they're kids that start off right leaning, or elder adults that are living in the past.

For the record, and maybe I just have too much free time, but you're both worth watching for the duration, be that 60 minutes or 180. Appreciate being informed and learning stuff I didn't know before. For instance US in The Philippines War, which as an Australian (born 1957) I knew of but had only a bare guess (given colonialism history) how bloody and brutal it were, which might have been suspected given how little it is mentioned.. After all, the First Nation in Australia did not get voting right until 1967, and an apology not until 2007, and perchance/consensus by vote in referendum for changes to constitution, by 2025, a voice in parliament nationally. Finally!! (at least I plucking hope so.)

Two of my favorite educational channels. I'm over 60 years of age but still want to learn. I took U.S. History in high school from a teacher who taught history as causes and effects rather than names, dates, and places, and he had a dry sense of humor that made history fascinating. His classes in U.S. history began with the Vikings landing in Canada and ended in the 1970s (I was taking this class in 1975), and I find instructors that teach in a similar fashion equally fascinating to listen to.

I highly agree with KB about the more social studies and less English. Knowing as much social studies as I do now would have helped me tremendously in English to grasp the subjects I would write about. The books and literature you read in English are way too narrow in scope for understanding the broader scope of the topic. You can read Huckleberry Fin, To Kill A Mockingbird, or Uncle Tom's Cabin to learn some about black history in the US, but that history hits you so much harder when you read very detailed textbooks about the era. Everyone objects to learning about history of course because history is inherently political. If you see the same patterns repeated throughout your country's history, you might just realize influential parts of your society be implicated in tragic and unjust events.

With regards to women entering the space (5th/6th question), an example of KB's idea of being harassed by male fans was the whole "female chest armour" debate between Shadiversity fans and some female creators, notable Jill Bearup. There was a lot of just blatant dismissal of Jill and other female creators' opinions, even though they are just as knowledgeable. Especially on topics that are discussed in which a male perspective has been the pervasive perspective for a long time (most topics), a lot of people are still very... unwilling to accept an opinion, even one with more historical basis, when it's coming from a woman, which I'm sure would put a lot of women off creating content and I think, in a broader sense, has prevented women from entering the space in schools and academia more broadly too.

Re: Women in Historytube - I'd recommend: •Nicole Rudolph (Fashion History - hella solid research, also has videos on the material history related to clothing/garment (the arsenic as a component in fabric/wallpaper coloring is an example)) •Danielle Bainbridge from PBS Origins (Social history - such as the origin of proms in high school, though sometimes she dwells into more serious topics like the origin of african slavery in the western hemisphere and the second amendment in the US Constitution. The channel itself currently focuses on Pirate History, so the presenter is different, but she has a lot of video backlog in the channel) •Reading the Past with Dr. Kat (English History - Tudor and Elizabethan era in particular, though occasionally she'd go a few centuries back and a few centuries forward, she has a few videos about the Regency era as well.) •Xiran Jay Zhao (Chinese History - might not be strictly a history channel (because they started with media review) but they have videos on China's only Empress regnant Wu Zetian, and some more...) On KB points on how movements haven’t caused change, I think it’s mainly because these movements lack a good leader to guide things and also that sometimes, things don’t change right away. Right now im taking a class on the voting rights act and to me it’s kind of crazy how long it took for black people to get that right. There was ton of good change after the civil war, then after awhile they lost all those rights, then it took ~60 years of fighting just to get that right back. My teacher also mentioned how the death of Booker T Washington was a big deal for the movement because he accepted segregation but once he died, it allowed for people who weren’t supportive of this to take over and lead way(which again, empathizes how leaders of the movements can affect things). Another interesting thing I have taken from the class was how strategic MLK really was. For example, he chose the location of Selma on purpose because he thought it would perfectly illustrate his issue of blacks needing the right to vote. When I think of stuff like Black Lives Matter, it was just a lot of people protesting something obviously bad, but there was no really big figure explaining what needs to change. Of course I have my own ideas on what to change but does everyone protesting it also agree with me, probably not. Granted, I will say that things are definitely a lot harder now a days compared to before. For example, my teacher mentions how during the MLK days, there was only like 3 stations so when the news reported something, everyone saw it. Now a days, there is just too much information out there and we all aren’t watching the same thing. Like yeah, a bunch of the main stream media could be reporting on one issue, but then what if my neighbor is watching some extreme KZbinr to get his news because he doesn’t trust the mainstream media. Now we both live in two extremely different worlds and it takes a lot more work to get us to agree then it probably would have in the past

A great example of a guy who breaks his video into parts and does a great job at it is Bobby Broccoli. His videos on academic dishonesty in physics are very fascinating and it seems like most people watch all the parts (some are 3 parts) given the comments. I don’t think there’s a right answer. It’s what works best for your style. Your videos work as a single video, and I tend to watch the whole thing even if it’s long. One of the good things about breaking it into parts though is that a video that’s 2 and a half hours long can be broken into parts. I don’t usually have 2 hours to watch a video on KZbin and would love to be able to say watch part 1 and come back later and watch the rest.

I had kids at 20. Honestly, it was a struggle but it is worth it. You are gonna pay a million for them, sure, but if you put anything into them, the reward is far beyond anything you can imagine. And I am not talking in your nursing home years, but in the lessons, challenges, and growth they give you on a daily basis. My children have done a great job making me aware of the balance between critical reasoning and intuition. I had two early on, and another after a 10 year break. We have done public, charter, and home school with each kid separately. Honestly, I was a bit struck - but not surprised - that you were both against homeschooling. I think it comes down to the child, first, but home schooling has already paid off dividends with the youngest. Minor disappointment aside, I wish our social structure was more hospitable to family and children. I am still a proponent of 'the issue is the suburb design' and other reasons that lead into cronyism v community.

I'm a substitute teacher in Los Angeles, and this last week i was at a school where one student absolutely terrorized his classmates with his behavior. I stepped in to stop him, i grabbed a stick he was using as a weapon, and then i got a talking to by one of the permanent teachers that grabbing the stick was a bad idea, that this child's parents would have me fired if they found out. Absolute insanity.

There are plenty of female science communicators as well. But I appreciate that the fact that I can only think of one history one still answers your point.

Gotta disagree with KB that English should be deemphasized. Rhetoric and how to use and recognize it is an important skill that is taught by English class. Rhetoric used to be a whole subject in and of itself, but now it’s been relegated to English class. I do agree though that the book report focused nature doesn’t do people much good, and can be liable to turn people off to literary analysis or reading altogether

In regards to standardized tests, I dislike the current way they work. I get the need for a measuring stick to determine how intelligent someone is, but I don't think they handle what someone is good at. Personally, I always struggled with the English tests, but that didn't show what I was good at. I was also really bad about second guessing myself on multiple choice questions. I feel like testing someone's strengths over time would be more important, even if that's a trade instead of an academic subject. At the very least, teachers shouldn't be judged on the output of students in a general sense. Strengths could be found through grades or standardized tests, but improvements of educational development would probably show through the student's improvements on their strengths, not from their general ability. I remember so many teachers getting nervous around standardized testing season and encouraging students a little more or giving a basic summary during that time to make sure the students did well. Some people did great because they were naturally talented with academics. Some people did great because they thought it would go on their "permanent record." Other students tried to prepare as best as they could, but did poorly because the subjects covered by standardized tests aren't their strengths. In that last case of my generalization, there were students that just didn't care because they were already sick of the subjects. At the end of the day, standardized testing isn't a perfect method. I'm not suggesting my concept of testing based on strengths is the way either, but I figured I'd comment since you are both teachers and have a personal perspective on the topic.

I chose a career in City Planning in part for my love of urban design and geography. Unfortunately the job itself is rather dull and highly subject to political meddling. If you live in a car-oriented area, it can be incredibly frustrating to see your new urbanism dreams dashed by the city council that prefers to spend money on widening roadways. In areas that value their urban fabric, public processes are extremely long and drawn out.

I liked the conversation but I think there was a generally unfounded pessimism in the sections discussing the future of the US. To focus on one thing, the abortion issue and overturning on Roe(I'm a law student and also recently completed a comparative constitutional law class). I'm going to be generalizing for multiple countries but have looked in depth at Germany, France, England, and some others. The conception that America is more regressive and/or getting more regressive relative to a lauded progressive European block or the whole world is incorrect(and I believe versions of this bias are driven by both sides of the partisan divide) especially in this subject. In general since around the time that roe was originally decided European abortion law has been: (1) all abortion is illegal (2) abortion after 12 weeks is criminalized (3) abortion processes require women to go before a government associated panel and/or multiple rounds of doctors to justify the reason for the abortion whom are legally obligated to attempt to dissuade the woman (while this is now usually a rubber stamp process in the end it's designed to pyschologically affect the women; many of these panels would detail all the financial incentives/public healthcare that the woman can receive to make the decision seem arbitrary and in fact in Germany I've seen evidence that these panels would bring up that Nazis performed forced abortions as a mechanism) (4) the public healthcare systems pick up the tab either way. It's also likely that because healthcare is nationalized in many of these countries that doctors were fairly compliant and strict with abiding by these laws. What's very shocking is basically that the pro life movement/GOP since Roe have been picking away at Roe by trying to replicate the European standard regime. Counter intuitively with the overturning of Roe, the average American still has higher legal access to abortion than most Europeans today. Funnily the US, which does have a lot of christians conservatives also has a strong pro choice movement that actually grew in response to the overturning and support for the roe/ casey standard is polling over 50% , most of the european countries are increasingly not religious but have little to no broad movements to increase access to abortion or to remove the various punitive barriers.

@@iammrbeat thanks for the reply! And yeah I don't mean to imply there isn't progress to be made in the US(from a pro choice perspective). But I think to avoid cynicism people have to have the whole narrative in front of them, if anything the US was actually far more progressive earlier than the most of the world(on this issue at least) and has now been set back by the Roe/Casey overturning but that also has set it up to likely reliberalize the issue soon. + On the Australia stuff I think they have some good stuff but also some bad stuff that other viewers may have been referencing: (1) Australian public election funding is directly proportional to vote share in the previous cycle for the same position(not terrible but it exponentially strengthens incumbent advantage) (2) their previous prime minister recently tried to administratively coup the government (3) they specifically didn't include several protected rights they considered adopting from the US in their constitution because(and this is documented in writing) they didn't want it used to protect east Asian immigrants in the future (4) they have a more fraught racial history than many realize including a lot of socially accepted black face characters... (5) their COVID lockdown stuff was actually more extreme than most countries but also constantly undermined by letting rich celebrities use it as haven during the lockdown while not allowing normal people to cross domestic territory borders.

The German “abortion process” is a compromise to accommodate the more catholic South of the country. The Protestant/ Lutheran North has always been more “pro-choice”, so the “consultation” requirement was introduced to get a national compromise. There a lots of national compromises as Germany is a Federal Republic of vastly different states. The consultation is not some scary panel but a conversation usually with one or two people over a cup of coffee/ tea in a rather comfortable environment. Talking to women who have been through the process or worked as consultants (e.g. female social workers), neither scary nor manipulative. The “Nazi reference” sounds rather misleading in my opinion as well… in some countries almost every child with Down syndrome and similar disabilities will get aborted, however in Germany the testing for those conditions is optional and even an abortion is still only an option. Everyone in Germany knows that the Nazis murdered disabled people, so many people make a conscious choice to reject that attitude towards people with disabilities. Due to universal healthcare e.g. they would not have to pay for certain genetic testing but choose not to do it as they believe people with disabilities live full and meaningful lives (in contrast to what the Nazis believed - “useless eaters”). All/ Most Germans know what the Nazis did to disabled people, and women who made “poor reproductive choices” - forced abortions and sterilisations, etc - these are not things that are brought at some “abortion panels” as some surprise or something….. Germans know their history, it is everywhere, all the time…. so talking about it is just part of life. Topics like Euthanasia, Eugenics, etc. will always be a different topics in Germany due to the Nazis murdering disabled people. Disabled German people will never fully trust medical personnel in many ways…. how medical establishment treats and views disabled life… and maybe 🤔 people with disabilities in other countries shouldn’t trust those in power and the medical establishment either….
@hrolfthestrange

@@Lorenz1973 my point wasn't that the German process is inherently bad, but that it has been undoubtedly less pro choice than the US during the Roe standard and than many states even post Roe despite a common sentiment in the US left that the US is notably more conservative on this and other issues than the world and specific northern european countries. I think if we were actually value comparing the countries in their totality or on this issue, it's really a matter of various tradeoffs. Let's assume a woman who wants or needs an abortion has the choice of where to instantly be(no additional exceptional circumstances), if she is lacking funds and under 12 weeks, Germany would provide better access, if she has funds and is 13 weeks the US provides better access, if she's 13 weeks and lacks funds she wouldn't be in a good position in either but maybe the US would still be better because she could potentially take on debt that would(at least purely economically) be trivial in comparison to other healthcare costs of giving birth/having a child. Ultimately, this extends far beyond abortion as a policy issue, most countries of a certain level of health, freedom and security offer structures that optimize for different things, preference different situations(and inherently deprioritize others) and people should think of that before idealizing other systems.
