The flow on this is 🎯🎯🎯 plus the word play, alliterations, aggression and the realism is what makes this song a masterpiece for me. Add all that to the fact that the instrumental is so good, almost like a rap/hard core rock sound and you have one of the greatest rap songs ever.

yes, he wrote this because his label said he didn't have a single and needed one. He was was like "ok then, here ya go". but then they still said "nope, a real single"...and "The Real Slim Shady" was born. I remember sitting and waiting for the radio station to play the hours top 5 again, so I could hear the song over and over before the album dropped. I was a sophomore in high school, had JUST gotten my license, and went straight down to Karma the day it released. Walked out the door and got in my car, and immediately began driving around to this classic. Im 37 now, and I still remember that day like it was yesterday lol. Living through the Eminem dynasty alongside Eminem was so impactful, it's impossible to explain the craziness that was the era of Eminem. He's, rightfully, still amazing today but this was before internet and stewing and stuff. It was all MTV and radio and cds. Artists and fame were kind of different back then. He was just on an unprecedented pedestal at that time and it was pretty amazing to witness. I can actually remember when I got the Eminem Show the next year too lol. I remember going between school and bball practice and jammed it out to practice. I remember the exact teammate I had a conversation with about it because he had done the same lol

@@fikilemkhize5776 It’s probably one of the reasons he hasn’t gone stagnant. It always feels like he switched addictions from substances and hyper focused on rhyming and english in general. Hell, he almost talks in rhyme patterns. With how much he’s in the studio and writing, I’d love to see the catalog of random songs, flows, beats, etc.. The library of unreleased material of his has to be staggering. It’s always felt like he took a lot of lessons from Dre, especially after getting clean. Like you said, you don’t have to love, or even like, everything he puts out, but his talent, willingness to try new flows/schemes, has to be respected and that’s before adding how much respect he’s given to the game and other legends in it.

I love how he modifies the third line of the first verse to stay with the flow. "the most MEAN-est m.C. on this E, on this EARTH, and since BIRTH, Ive been Cursed, with this Curse, to just CURSE" That's literally a snippet of the verse and it's packed with lyrical genius and keeps the "stomp stomp CLAP" for the first verse and in the second, he changes it up in a way that he probably only does it to challenge himself by doubling up on the syllables in the first 2 lines of the stanza to 6, and THEN doubling those in the last line to 12. It's truly something that requires savant level of natural ability as well as very high type of intelligence that deals with rhythm and linguistics and audible mathematics, whatever that's called...percussive intelligence?? But he goes into, "I'm so sick AND TIRED, of being ADMIRED" 6 and 6 with the last 3 or 4 syllables with his bendability delivery and finishes the stanza with, "that I just wish I would just die or get fired" 12 syllables!

I was listening to bands like Pantera and Slayer at the time when he came out swinging at that shit. We were like “Fuck Yeah”!! This is the crap that the ones saying he only went at pop stars doesn’t get. He was taking on the industry itself. So abrasive and against the grain for the time. We needed it.

Hey Knox thanks for really breaking down the music just has the lyrics. I recently ran across a like documentary type of video that was by his mother and his uncle. They were talking about how he was such a weird little kid and he would always rock back-and-forth especially when he heard music. And if he thought that something was seriously wrong with him mentally. His uncle said that once he got older he was able to stop rocking and instead he would do this weird thing with his hand with his index and middle finger and make a tapping type shaking motion with them all the time and he would have them on the table or kept them on his pants when he was thinking and it made people think that he was mentally disturbed. When I heard that it reminded me of that I Canik seen an eight Mile when he’s on the bus and he takes out his paper and he’s writing and doing that thing with his hand and almost tapping on the paper with his right hand. This track really embraces the feeling of the frantic nature of his life at a time when suddenly he had all these crazy fans and his whole personal life is falling apart, so when I hear the cadence and the beat and physically rock back and forth a little with it, it feels like wanting to pull your hair out stress and anxiety all combined. I think that might be the secret of how he’s always able to put so much emotion and make the listener really feel a certain kind of way. It’s just an interesting thing to note for musicians, and kind of Geeky thing, but I think it makes a difference in critically analyzing the intent and feeling of the art and what it says about the artist. It like listening to Beethoven’s Ode to Joy after realizing he was deaf and composed it by sawing the legs off his piano and lying on the floor. The art was more about the vibration of the sound against the body instead of in the ear.

Much respect for Eminem, I like his late 90s early 2000s songs and kinda went out of it in recent decades. Music was more important to me during the 90s and 2000s until mid 2000s when life took other paths. But I always remember being amazed by Eminem how he sets up the humor as well as the background story of most of his songs and my teen years went from listening to his funny songs to his more serious ones.

This was the first hiphop song ever I learned bar for bar. I was in lower secondary school and can still bust out this beast out whenever called upon. I think I could do every song from the Marshall Mathers LP to this day. It had such a huge impact on me. This plus Marilyn Manson who is named in this song was a huge part of my teenage years. I had blond hair like him one year and black with a blue tint the other year just like Eminem and Marylin Manson. I used to get bullied a lot at school but music like this made me fight back so hard that people would rarely try twice, and I owe a lot of that fight back and confidence to music like this. I am 5,2 feet "tall" now as an 37 year adult so imagine how hard it was being a child and teenager going to school every day.

Your breakdowns are always great, and very informative. Even though it's not anything I'd get into myself, the way you explain stuff really gives an understanding of how rhymeschemes can be set up and bent. Like... You could bend Callous all the way to something like Liberty if you scheme it out enough. Not something I'd have ever considered as a more fiction writer, lol. A great breakdown as always. E.g: (Warning, horrible rhyming, probably) They say that I'm callous, But there's never any malice. You see? My hands; they're calloused Me sayin' I'm soft is a fallacy, But I just didn't live in a palace, see? My pen ain't blister free, They're paged on leaves from a bitter tree, And ink'll that'll split the sea. I may never write life, love and liberty, But I'm eloquent enough, you'll consider me.

I loved it and almost was annoyed he pulled his punches a bit by saying he doesn't mean to be mean, be mean. I love it because all that's dark and threatening has been the driver of my life and I am at peace with where it's taken me. I've found the most hauntingly beautiful things because of it. I'll be 37 this month feel like I was born at the perfect time to experience things that mattered. Also just realizing he said marilyn and heroin in gnat, too. Totally different meanings and but still said he had it. This song is my helpline in my life. When someone says I don't like that about you then I immediately think of this song and say: you ain't like me well I'm glad that's the way I am, don't like me leave me.

R.A.K.I.M is the song and it’s off of the 8 mile sound track. Flames..flames..FLAMES!!! Then again I don’t recall a song on that sound track that wasn’t pure fire. Lol. Someone please correct me if I’m wrong.

He speaks the truth about people thinking they own you when you’re having private time - on stage is where they perform for you but out and about he owes people nothing. He’s entitled to privacy 👏

Speaking of "rock stations*, Eminem was on the Warped Tour his first year he came out with Hi, My Name Is. I remember seeing him and I was backstage, and I stood on the side of the stage while he played. I am mad at myself for not actually caring, because at the time, I thought he was the next Vanilla Ice, I didn't think he had staying power and thought he was a joke. If I could go back and relive that time and meet him, I would completely change what I did that day.

Man, whatever Dre, just let it run Ayo, turn the beat up a little bit Ayo, this song is for anyone... Fuck it, just shut up and listen, ayo I sit back with this pack of Zig-Zags and this bag Of this weed, it gives me the shit needed to be The most meanest MC on this on this Earth And since birth I've been cursed with this curse to just curse And just blurt this berserk and bizarre shit that works And it sells and it helps in itself to relieve all this tension Dispensing these sentences, getting this stress That's been eating me recently off of this chest And I rest again peacefully But at least have the decency in you To leave me alone, when you freaks see me out In the streets when I'm eating or feeding my daughter To not come and speak to me I don't know you, and no, I don't owe you a mothafuckin' thing I'm not Mr. N'Sync, I'm not what your friends think I'm not Mr. Friendly, I can be a prick if you tempt me My tank is on empty, no patience is in me And if you offend me, I'm lifting you ten feet in the air I don't care who was there and who saw me just jaw you Go call you a lawyer, file you a lawsuit I'll smile in the courtroom and buy you a wardrobe I'm tired of all you, I don't mean to be mean But that's all I can be, it's just me And I am whatever you say I am If I wasn't, then why would I say I am? In the paper, the news, every day I am Radio won't even play my jam 'Cause I am whatever you say I am If I wasn't, then why would I say I am? In the paper, the news, every day I am, huh I don't know, it's just the way I am Sometimes I just feel like my father I hate to be bothered with all of this nonsense, it's constant And, oh, it's his lyrical content, the song Guilty Conscience Has gotten such rotten responses And all of this controversy circles me And it seems like the media immediately points a finger at me So I point one back at 'em, but not the index or pinkie Or the ring or the thumb, it's the one you put up When you don't give a fuck, when you won't just put up With the bullshit they pull, 'cause they full of shit too When a dude's getting bullied and shoots up his school And they blame it on Marilyn and the heroin Where were the parents at? And look where it's at! Middle America, now it's a tragedy Now it's so sad to see, an upper-class city Havin' this happenin' Then attack Eminem 'cause I rap this way But I'm glad, 'cause they feed me the fuel that I need For the fire to burn and it's burning, and I have returned And I am whatever you say I am If I wasn't, then why would I say I am? In the paper, the news, every day I am Radio won't even play my jam 'Cause I am whatever you say I am If I wasn't, then why would I say I am? In the paper, the news, every day I am I don't know, it's just the way I am I'm so sick and tired of being admired That I wish that I would just die or get fired And dropped from my label, let's stop with the fables I'm not gonna be able to top on "My Name Is" And pigeon-holed into some poppy sensation To cop me rotation at rock-n-roll stations And I just do not got the patience To deal with these cocky Caucasians Who think I'm some wigger who just tries to be black 'Cause I talk with an accent, and grab on my balls So they always keep asking the same fucking questions What school did I go to, what hood I grew up in The why, the who, what, when, the where and the how 'Til I'm grabbing my hair and I'm tearin' it out 'Cause they driving me crazy, I can't take it I'm racin', I'm pacin', I stand and I sit And I'm thankful for every fan that I get But I can't take a shit in the bathroom Without someone standing by it No, I won't sign you an autograph You can call me an asshole, I'm glad, 'cause... I am whatever you say I am If I wasn't, then why would I say I am? In the paper, the news, every day I am Radio won't even play my jam 'Cause I am whatever you say I am If I wasn't, then why would I say I am? In the paper, the news, every day I am I don't know, it's just the way I am

Listening to this again (How many damn years later) I never really paid total attention to the lyrics. Not sure really why? Maybe....actually my age. 20-something year old all about the music. There were anthems and albums of my childhood I really did pay attention to the lyrics (One - Metallica, Etranged - GNR, Rhythm Nation - Janet Jackson, etc) But somehow a butt-ton of music was missed lyrically. Now my 40's has been revisiting artists such as Em, and wondering how I missed a lot of music with some damn powerful meaning inside the lyrics.
