Today, I introduced my brother to the magic of Knox Hill. He was a huge Eminem fan back in the day (still is), so I figured that introducing him to you on Mathers Thursday was a great choice. He pointed out that the slant rhyme scheme involving the "signal, insults, pencil, symbol" actually stretches farther back to the "O" rhymes, because of Eminem's specific pronunciations. You're too Old, Let Go, it's Over, ... TechnO And then he pronounces the "-nal, insults, -cil" as if it's "sign-o," "inso' "pen-sO" "symbO" I thought that was a brilliant insight, and an extension to your analysis. (He's not feeling good, and didn't have the energy to back up and comment himself. As such, I decided to share his insight with you.)

Always loved and was so fascinated the way he says the lines: "Some vodka that'll jump-start my heart quicker Than a shock when I get shocked at the hospital" - The repetition of the word shock and the way he says it sounds like he's actually being zapped. And then he also rhyme "shocked at the" with "hospital" - Eminem is scary good. And if that wasn't enough, he had to go and prove that he can rhyme the syllables "Na na na na na na... Fixed your bent antenna tune it in and then I'm enter into...." 😅
@mcoelho86595 ай бұрын
Hi, Knox! I'm from Brazil and I like to study English, specially through films and songs. The rap attracts me a lot, because of the sonority and the pace, but it is also extremely difficult to get some parts when the pronunciation joins or swallows some words. So, maybe, you could make some videos explaining more about the pronunciation in the songs, for exemplo, this one from Eminem. For instance, the part that goes: "A little bit of weed mixed with some hard liquor, Some vodka that'll jump-start my heart quicker" is very though for me, even slow, because it seems to miss some words like "with" and also the "vodka that'll" sounds completely different. I believe it would be really interesting if you approached more of the pronunciation, considering the huge role it plays in the songs, even more in rap (I think)! Thanks!
@chrismcmeekin84702 жыл бұрын
I always assumed that because Dre was in the video that he produced this is but no, it was all Em. Also, people say he didn't start rapping fast until Rap God, but the first time I heard "fix your bent antenna tune it in and then I'm gonna..." I had no replay that like 20 times to figure out what the hell he was saying. Nobody was rapping like that, we'd never heard anything like it.

I remember when this dropped like yesterday. It was the first rap song I really liked (I was more to techno/eurodance/trance at that time). The thing was that the video was funny. I knew most of the references and what's best, the pronuncitation was so clear that even though english is my second (or third) language, I could follow the song. Though it took many more years to bring the stan out of me, this is what started it. I wrote a paper about Eminem, when had to write an essee about our favorite poet. Was going to get a 1 (as in, failed) out of it, but once I opened up what I see as poetry and that I've read more than my fair share about "real" poetry, it went to 5. And I know I got that 50 plus-year old lady to listen to Eminem and rap alltogether, as she realised how intricate it all is, and that it really isn't literal, but it's real.

My introduction to Eminem was this song. I was 6 years old, my dad and I were going to Wriggly Field to watch a baseball game. And during the trip, the song played three times on the way there and three times back. I didn’t know what it was saying, I didn’t know who Eminem was, but man I remember feeling this beat resonate through the car and bopping with it. I was repeating “guess who’s back?” for a month. It wouldn’t be another several years before I ‘rediscovered’ Eminem - a little before Relapse - when I became an outright fan. I just remember hearing Without Me for the first time in years and it just… Resonated through my body. The nostalgia that accompanied it made it my favorite Eminem song. And it still is. I still feel the vibrations of the beat in my whole body when I hear it.

Lol i just realized this but the font of the "ENN" at the end - with his backwards E he uses throughout- when turned upside down, just so happens to look like "ME"! Also, something else I don't see get pointed out in reactions to this music video is, while overall you are following Eminem as "Rap Boy" on his way to the little kid's house to stop him from listening to his music, which had been deemed "too controversial", a lot of the side scenes scattered throughout show all these other quite controversial stuff that was also shown on TV or was popular at this time. So he is kinda pointing out the hippocracy of society there, because all these other things are fine but "oh no not Eminem! We cant let the kids hear him! We need to protect them from those bad things!" Lol. And then yet again, another layer, having himself in each of those scenes plays to the idea that if he is added to the picture, he'd make it even more controversial and therefore "too much", which is the point he is both embracing/having fun with, as well as criticizing it in this song and video.
