Knuckles' Chaotix playthrough ~Longplay~

This is a playthrough of Knuckles' Chaotix for the SEGA Mega Drive/Genesis 32X (timestamps below).
During regular gameplay the order of the levels you'll play will be decided by the semi-random level selector in the Newtrogic High hub world. In the interest of making this playthrough easier to follow, I've grouped each of an attraction's levels together.
Knuckles' Chaotix was pretty much the only game anyone's heard of from the Mega Drive's ill-fated 32X add-on, and it's quite an interesting, experimental take on Sonic gameplay. The main mechanic of tying two characters together takes some getting used to and is understandably the most divisive part of the game, though I do enjoy how some of the levels like Botanic Base and Marina Madness look, and the soundtrack is fantastic.

Chaotix is quite an interesting game in my eyes, has really cool visuals, great music, fun special stages and interesting bosses, and it can be fun to use the combi mechanic once you get use to it, but the level desing is so insipid It makes it a little bit boring, i still find this game quite enjoyable

What I always found weird about the game is how empty the stages feel, enemies are only seen sparingly. Feels more like a maze explorer than a true Sonic game.

It ain't perfect, but a few things they did in future sonic titles seem to harken back toward this game. Namely mighty and the crane game character picker in Sonic mania plus, though the bonus stage in Sonic heroes looks familiar....

All of these games vary in quality, but all have the same generic feel of either Green Hill Zone, bland, or realistic sorta fantasy (that’s been done a bunch) Again, vary in quality, but kinda disappointed in the theming of the games not going for anything surreal or out there. Probably why I love CD, Colors, and Mania so much lol

I just started playing this game. After about 15 minutes to figure out the controls, I have to say this game is insanely underrated. Is it ok to say I prefer it over Sonic CD? It feels a lot like Sonic CD with the huge levels and a lot of vertical exploring. I don't understand why this game got so much hate. It's fantastic.

@@minecraft6829 I haven't experienced any glitches. I am playing an emulator, so maybe the original cartridge on 32X was less reliable? I will say the game does feel a bit undercooked - the play style is really fun, but the levels feel a tad empty. Overall, I love the visual design though.

Because this was supposed to be a Saturn Game and much bigger just like Sonic CD with more playable characters. It was cancelled for many reasons and when the 32X came out they were desperate for titles. They then downgraded what they had to fit on the 32X and this is the final result. Sega was very protective of Sonic's reputation at the time so this is why both him and Tails were removed. One of the executive managers even had to beg to have Metal Sonic included, which was granted with the condition he would be a secondary character. Also some stages like Techno Tower recycle a lot of areas between acts, which shows how rushed and downgraded this was. So in short it's a downgraded and rushed version of a cancelled, much bigger Saturn game. If you play without the combi link and then play Sonic 3, you will notice how inferior the physics are.

So far, this is the only Sonic game where Knuckles appears as the protagonist instead of Sonic. The other 3 games also have Tails and Shadow as main protagonists, too. Maybe other Sonic characters can have their own games in the future, too, like Blaze the Cat, Silver the Hedgehog, or the Babylon Rogues.😃

They should had selled this game with a lock on system like Virtua racing in some regions and S3&K...but nooo, they went for the 32X ad on... Sonic CD is understandable, but not this one. To the guys above. This game is good, no argument there, and SEGA had it's response to DKC in the form of Vectorman 1 and 2, which had nothing to envy on DKC except for its marketing (which maked better could had been a good companion franchise to Sonic, along with Ristar and others)...gtfo nintdrones...

And not to mention it was also a great showcase of the SNES' sound capabilities, far more superior than the Megadrive.

Apparently, the 32X is notoriously difficult to emulate, hence why this game has never been re-released. (Sega wanted to include it on the Sonic Gems Collection for GameCube, but they just couldn't get it to run right.) I wouldn't hold your breath, unfortunately 😕

In 1994 a better ps1 was released with 3d games while Sega was still stuck in 32 bit 2d games. N64 was banging the market with Zelda and m64 and kart and smash games while ps1 well they had a huge bunch of master pieces. Honestly Sega deserved it They digged out their own grave
