Grob spline machine comes from Grafton, Wisconsin, USA. Grob was a German immigrant, very inventive. Splines are formed by impact forging. Spline shaft is actually indexed while it appears to be rotating. Grain structure makes for very strong teeth. Grob also made filing machines, and excellent band saws. At one time, he made floats for a float plane, no steps. Couldn't break suction and never took off. His home outside Grafton had a trout pond with a staircase underwater, to watch the trout. My dad worked for him in the 1950's. Now company is employee owned - good stuff!

Interesting story. Reminds me of The Mosquito Coast. There is a Grafton in Australia too, near where I live. No Grob there. Famous for the Big Banana.

We had the very same Grob machine for hand loading 6,354 Crankshafts & another which was automated for 4,236 Crankshafts at Perkins Engine’s in Peterborough U.K. the automated one knocked out around 34 + Crankshafts an hour, Obviously the operator in video hasn’t got hydraulic assist clamps as we had on ours.. Great machines & easy to fit new rollers & easy to set sizing.. Swiss engineers would come every year, take them apart & renew any parts that required replacing.. When the crankshaft stub end design changed from splined to finish ground surfaces, I believe they were sold off to a company in Pakistan for distribution,

Soo, that bit spins, and that bit spins, and out pops some straight lines. Mind blown.

@mohdfaizul59313 жыл бұрын
It was forged...slowly...bit by bit...same as the usual knurling wheels...listen to the hammering sound...usually when we knurl a part we continue adding pressure to the part by the cross slide...same technique, different approach..

Splines aren't cut. The splines appear to be hammer forged into the piece.That would make the piece very strong & wear resistant.
@prabakaranasokraj1743 жыл бұрын
Splines are usually ground. But rolling spline is better. Watch the operator checking the mating.. Great

Those splines seem to be raised, rather than cut, no? What would you call this process, if not knurling?
@electech33393 жыл бұрын
@@leehaelters6182 I might call it upsetting or maybe hammer forging by the sound of it, but I can't clearly see what is happening inside the machine during the process. Not sure if I'm hearing some sort of impact hammers or what the clacking noise is for sure.
@leehaelters61823 жыл бұрын
@@electech3339, point taken that the process is obscured, and therefor inscrutable.
@benwilms39423 жыл бұрын
@@leehaelters6182 i think it's just roll forming, so the shaft would be turned to a diameter somewhere between the major and minor diameter of the spline, and then when the rollers displace the material from the low spots, it must flow to form the high spots. I think so anyway.
