In this episode of Cruising Off Duty, we are at the Annapolis Sailboat Show checking out the Catamarans to see what we think would suit us as a for a full-time live-aboard catamaran for when we sail full-time as we circumnavigate the globe.
This episode we cover the Knysna 500 which is a 50' Catamaran made in South Africa. Watch to see what we think.

Thanks. Problem with prices, is most production companies quoted a low price but then racks on all sorts of needed extras. So without getting the exact same gear on each boat, you can’t really know the price. So I avoid quoting exact prices. Often an apples to oranges comparison.

wood on a boat gets wet, rots and get moldy. since the hull and exterior are plastic why not just make the interior plastic. the plastic chosen looks tacky but there is nothing stopping you from getting a better faux wood/plastic finish. another advantage is the weight - wood weighs a lot more even in mdf than a good plastic part. i would go for an all metal boat if youre going wood so you can strip out the wood at some point and replace it while keeping the hull intact.

Our present boat has a lot of teak inside. Wood on the outside takes a beating. Wood on the inside is not hard to keep looking nice. We don’t want IKEA Bristol board cabinets if we can avoid it.
@keithmoser1495

OK maybe wood on the outside is not a plus. Plastic requires at least two waxing a year or more a year while interior wood a wipe down with Olive oil every 6 months.

Like this boat a ton with one exception .....the slanted bows in the wrong direction (my opinion) as it would seem they would catch a wave when surfing and be dangerous. The reverse bows or plumb bows seem to be a better config.

I showed the helm area with all the winches and lines heading to that one area and said it is set up to single hand. So clearly if you can single hand then sailing with 2 people is even easier. I can't test sail every boat we look at at the show to prove it can be sailed by a couple? Our reviews are a walkthrough of the boats at the show. If you want to see it being sailed, I'd suggest you search KZbin for videos created by the manufacturer showing it being sailed. Most of them produce videos like that to showcase how their boat looks under sail etc.

Personally, I'd also choose the plastic over the wood interiors. The wood looks better but the upkeep would be massive over time. The plastic will wear much better and be cheaper to maintain. I'd go for all smoothed fiberglass interiors with a dash of paint here or there for color but low maintenance being the ultimate goal. I want to spend my time and money on cruising...not updating and repairing interiors every few years.
@Bowmans-Woods
@Bowmans-Woods 5 жыл бұрын
Our boat now has wood. Other than the companionway stars, the wood inside doesn’t need much if any upkeep. I totally get that wood anywhere near the outside is a bad idea but wood in cabins is a richer look than fiberglass. IMO.

@@Bowmans-Woods I totally agree. The wood looks better. WAY better. The darker/redder the better. Especially with green or blue leather covered cushions. I love that old 1930's look and feel on a boat. But...with that said....on day 355 of the circumnavigation and the 15th empty bottle of Wax headed for the trash ...all that wood would come back to haunt me. 1 bucket of warm bleach-water and a rag and an hour wiping down all the smoothed fiberglass/plastic surfaces and call it won and done!

I found your review to be severely lacking. Yes, you show the accommodation space but you do it like a real estate agent would be showing a condo in Florida. Your review I think left more questions than answers! I don't think you guys opened a single locker, ie, is there somewhere appropriate to handle wet weather gear? (On the Kynsna, yes there is). This is a boat that people are going to sea in, not going to be living in a marina full time. You didn't show any of the machinery spaces, ie, did you know the engines are 56hp Yanmars (which are upgrades on many boats, standard on the Kynsna). The engines are beneath the aft berths, that would be importent for people to know, some will like that, some will not & that is a serious point of consideration for most which isn't covered at all in your "review". You didn't show the machinery space that contains the generator, watermaker, etc, which is all in a cabinet area accessed for example from the owners area, quite nicely laid out. All you would have had to do is open a cabinet door. Nice selling point for a boat you're going to take to sea. Did you know it has hydraulic steering for example? A huge consideration filled with pros and cons (rudders are operated independently for example), no tie rod between rudders, dependent on another pump, etc. Some will like and some will hate that, but your audience would want to know things like this I think. It would have been easy to show the vast storage area for gear where the engines are on most other catamarans, again, pros & cons that would be importent consideration for people considering buying a cat. Where is the life raft stored, do you know? Many cats have them in places which would be almost impossible to access if the boat capsized. The Kynsna has it in a brilliant location that not only keeps it dry but can be accessed no matter the orientation of the boat. It would have only taken seconds to show this. You totally missed the furling main (as opposed to the usual stack pack), the forward storage areas, etc. I could go on & on but my point has been made I think. I am in no way connected with Kynsna, just a guy looking for a well thought out world cruiser. You could have shown all the above and more within the time constraints of your video I am convinced. I appreciate what you're trying to do, please just consider this constructive criticism. I hope your future reviews on other cats at the show cover at least a little more depth, I think many of your viewers would really appreciate it! Good luck in your search!
@Bowmans-Woods
@Bowmans-Woods 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Mike. Clearly you have researched the boat. Some of our future reviews have more detail because the person representing the boat either gave us a tour and allowed us to open lockers and lift beds to show engines and some boats are just privately owned yachts where the manufacturer just paid them to park their boat at the show but you are forbidden from opening cabinets and lockers because their personal stuff is inside. So if it’s a private boat we do sort walk through it as it is just a walking tour. One boat builder, Bali, even said they didn’t want us to film their boats??! So we can only do what we are allowed. If we get offered a guided tour we take it. If not we give a walking tour, which is better than nothing. Be a bit more understanding.

@@Bowmans-Woods Craig, I viewed several "private" cats at Annapolis, was never denied access to anything I wanted to see but I did have to ask for permission at times. Everyone was very accommodating. Anyway, wasn't trying to "get on your case", just thought more practical boat systems review & less of the accommodation would be appreciated by many (or at least "equal time")! Take care & good luck in your search!

Often the people at the entrance are not sales people and know little. The sales people are off making deals in desks off the boat.

my advice is to not spend all that money on something this expensive. there is a lot of boat that can be had for far less money. By less money I mean fractions, there are plenty of very seaworthy and comfortable boats under $150,000. Granted they may not all be catamarans but I think you might want to get your feet wet before you commit to that much money invested into a boat.

A) We are only interested in Living in a Catamaran. B) We don't plan to buy new. We quote the prices from the show but we will not be spending as much as they want for a new Cat. What we sell our house, cars, motorcycle and existing 35' monohull for is how much we can spend on out new (to us) Cat. No boat loan for us.

1.3 million Canadian. Good luck buying that. That comes up to 8500$ a month for 20years at 5% interest. You can get a 2012 Lagoon 500 for about 750 000$ Canadian, that would end up costing half the other Knysna a month... To me that makes more sense. I believe you're the one that said in the following video that it's not smart to buy a new boat because you'll end up paying for the depreciation....kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZnTGnaWYf6dngrs You should probably listen to your own advice.

This boat is not $1.3 million. You are confusing it with other boats we spoke of. You wouldn’t buy one of these and finance the whole thing. We are selling everything and that’s what we will spend for something used. No boat loan for us.

@@Bowmans-Woods at the end you indicated that the boat or a similar boat with different interior finish was 895 000$ 12:52 ....Annapolis is in the US...that's probably the US price. If you can swing that, cool. More power to you. But it seems like a lot of $ for not much boat.

Everything I quote is in US dollars. I have already factored in what we can afford to buy, used, in US dollars. I'm ballparking 500-600K. That will get us something pretty decent on the used market. It's still 4-5 years away so the exchange may get closer to par (or not) so that is always something to hope for. When we bought our present boat in 2010, the dollar was par and just after a recession when boats were cheap. So maybe that comes back again. I'm expecting a recession between now and when we buy in 4-5 yrs. That could make cats on the used market, really cheap again and chances are the US dollar goes down in a recession. Just like in 2009-2010. When people are losing their jobs the one thing that get sold at fire-sale prices in their boats.

Got to wait for my pension to vest. 5 years and counting down. If I was all of a sudden fabulously wealthy (I can't see that happening) I would go now. But since we are on the 5 year plan, I will probably sell the house in 4 years and then buy the boat that we can sail away in 5 prior to retirement. Patience is a virtue, or so I am told. ;-)
