If you think about it, Simpsons is a lot like The Music Man, and Springfield is a lot like River City - it's a warts-and-all look at the quintessential American town with all its prejudices, unfriendliness and small-mindedness, but somehow you STILL find something loveable in the people.

When the Simpsons was on fire, it literally bombards you with a joke onslaught, hit after hit.
I'm incredibly slow so I just realized that when Smithers and Burns escape using the grappling gun there is a "Batman-esque" musical flourish which makes sense, Danny Elfman wrote the score for the 1989 movie as well as the theme from "The Simpsons". Just realized it now.

Apu representing a culture and people that has been overlooked in the states for decades. Shot 8 times. Never missed a day of work. Stereotypes can be positive and funny at the same time. Erasing him from the mythos of the show is a refusal to acknowledge that this person existed in many of our lives. We had an Indian convenience store owner open up in the middle of town sometime in the mid 90s. He knew everybody locally and would remember whatever it was you usually bought. I didn't think of him as less than or more than anyone else in town, but that doesnt mean he wasnt a character deserving of time and proper arcs. I certainly asked more questions about his deal to my parents in our half assed catholic house than I ever would have if he weren't that guy in town at that store. He also sold us those cool like high powered lighters when we were like 12 so respect to that guy.
@Hebdomad72 жыл бұрын
Apu Nahasapeemapetilon is no more offensive to Indian Immigrants than Homer Simpson is to White Americans. Apu existed at a time when representation of Indian immigrants in media was non existent. Apu was a stereotype sure, all Simpson characters are. Apu is a man who came to America with dream of making a better life, he went to university and wrote a tic-tac-toe program using only punch cards "that that only the top human players could beat". Apu was a member of the B-Sharps. He has been a devout Hindu and proud American Citizen. But he's not without flaws either. Much like most of Springfield, he's an alcoholic and has had issues with Infidelity. But deep within is a bullet proof heart of gold. That said, I don't think Apu should have been retired. The whole Simpsons TV show should have been retired long ago.

I went to work for the Indian man who bought the BP station in my hometown in the 90s. After managing his station and becoming good friends with him he eventually invited me to accompany him as his guest at his home in Gujarat for a 3 weeks. It was the most incredible trip I've ever taken or ever expect to take. Truly an adventure for a 26 year old dude from Indiana who had never been outside of the US except for driving through Canada once as a kid My friend passed on a couple years back and I will always be thankful for his kindness.

I remember watching this when it first aired, back when the show was on Thursday. This actually happened in Peru and they still have abandoned monorail tracks standing. The president or someone high up embezzled money from public works and skipped town for France where the banks accepted his money. There’s also an abandoned subway up in Rochester New York where much the same thing happened. Classic con.
