Kobalt 40v Battery Review & Questions Answered

Lithium ion batteries don't have memory. The problem with Lithium-ion batteries is you don't want to leave them fully charged and you don't want to leave them fully discharged. Lithium-ion batteries are sensitive to both those scenarios. Lithium ion and Lithium Polymer batteries should be at around 50% charge when not in use. Overcharging and over discharging will destroy lithium ion and Lithium Polymer batteries. You will get the longest life out of these batteries if you stop the charge a little bit early and not discharge them completely when they are used. Heat is the other thing that will damage these kind of batteries. Don't leave them in the Sun. Let them rest after charging and let them cool down after use before charging. This will give you the most charge cycles and life of these batteries.

Thank you for this informative video 🙏🏽. Some tips from and for the Great White North - don't leave your batteries in your snowblower in an unheated garage - store them at room temperature. Before charging, let them warm up to room temperature. From my e-bike ownership I have also read that for long storage, batteries should be between 60 to 80% charged.

Great tutorial! I have the same tools you have - weedwacker, blower, and mower. I'll probably get the lawn edger and hedge trimmer next summer. The original question I was researching was charging time for the 40v battery. I came across your post and was happy to find out you answered every question I had, and some questions I would have never asked! Every item covered was news to me, so great job! I have several Kobalt outdoor equipment, but I bought a different brand string trimmer and edger recently and I’m going to return it unopened and go to Lowe’s and get a Kobalt so I can continue to interchange batteries. I have had good success with Kobalt so no reason to change to a different brand. Was just an impulsive decision.

About a year ago me and my uncle went to battery plus to have them check put some dealt batteries. None were good and we were told all rechargeable batteries are vulnerable to cold and heat and it's best to take them out of the shed and leave them in the house

So I just bought a Kobalt 40v battery and charger. I noticed my charger looks completely different than yours. My batteries stand straight up in the charger. Is there any difference in the regular batteries vs the Max? I'm hoping I can continue buying different 40v batteries without having to buy a different charger

Great video. I’ve got the ryobi ecosystem just because that’s what Craigslist offered up when I needed a used weed whacker. But I do the same things you say. Let the batteries cook off before charging. If I know I won’t mow for a couple of weeks or months I’ll leave them at 3/4 charge and then top them off every month or so. Then before use give them a quick charge. Hope your kobalt batteries last a long time snd hope my ryobis do too. 👍

Yeah,wish you the best with your Ryobi. I don’t get to caught up with the brand names to much. I’ve had a ton of battery powered tools by Porter Cable, Ryobi, Dewalt, Black+Decker, Kobalt.. You name it.. I think the key to enjoying these types of tools is knowing there limitations and work within those boundaries, and of course, care for them properly.. thanks again for sharing and watching the video’s.

Great video! I have a 40v Kobalt lawnmower (not self-propelled) that is now exactly 4 years old. At first, I was only getting about 50 minutes of run time (mowing thick bermuda grass on the middle height setting). Today, it only lasts about 25 minutes mowing the same lawn. I assume the battery is slowly dying, your thoughts?

Yes, they do start shortening on run time, but that sounds a bit excessive. A good sharp or new blade always brings things closer to their peak. Just a thought if you haven’t done anything with the blade in a while. Thanks for watching..!

If it came with it on there, it’s probably a white lithium grease or some type of electrical component lubricant, and you would want to leave it on there.If it’s something accumulating from the battery then I would be concerned about a faulty battery. Thanks for watching.!

I do not have a 80v, and I’ve never used one. I wouldn’t buy a 80v if I were going to replace the 40v. Simply because the 40v has done me an excellent service for 6 years now without a glitch. Thanks for watching..!

We own the mower, weed eater, pole bar chainsaw, and the pole bar hedge trimmer(that one was hard to find), plus the blower. We love them; especially now that gas is over $5 a gallon, even the lower grade (THANKS AOC AND BRANDON) We haven't had any problems yet; knock on wood! I take my batteries in around the first signs of 30-40 degree temperatures; I store them in a cat litter pale in my basement shop to keep them all together. Charger(s) stay in the garage.

No sir, it kicks up under a heavier load, have you checked to see if a string or wads of grass aren't constricting the blade from turning properly. That could be a simple external cause.

@@meanderingyogi6562 Thanks for you response! I checked the blower blade and saw nothing constricting it. It's nice to have a great view of the innards of this leaf blower. I purchased it in April,2021 and I saw it had a five year warranty so I will contact customer service on that. The battery gets real hot when in constant turbo mode and that can't be good for it.

My kobalt battery slipped out of my hands when I was about to put it in my lawnmower. It landed partially on my foot and the rest on the concrete driveway. Should I be worried about it been damaged? Are there certain signs that would inform me if it is damaged? The case is scratched but no cracks. I was able to run the mower normally and it charged.

Hello Erika, If it were mine and the charger didn't have any issues with charging it and it shows no signs of real damage, I would say it's fine .. Those cases are pretty tough. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching !

If it had been there from day one, I would venture to say it’s just some electrical terminal lubricant. I.E. white lithium grease. Since you said it just started showing up, I would side with caution and do some more research to see if something could be damaged.

I just bought the 20" Kobalt mower, charged and mowed then took the battery out is it normal at first to have a white grease on the terminal area, Kobalt told me to return the unit I did. Got the new unit the other one is the same with a grease on the battery can you advise?

That is a electrical grease applied to the terminal to prevent corrosion, and insure good contact.

I have a single 40v Kobalt battery that only ever charges halfway and then starts throwing a blinking red light. I can use it, it'll run for about half as long as normal, and then re-charge it but again only halfway. Any chance I can rehab it, or is it going to be this way forever?

Without your yard size, how is one to know. I have a standard 1/3 acre lot, I probably only mow 1/8 of an acre. I don't really know. It takes about 45 minutes for the front lawn, wet will kill 2 of the 2.5ah batteries, I pull them as soon as they struggle. If the grass is dry, I can do the front with one and the back with another. The taller and wetter the grass, the less time. Which is inverse to a quality cut. On the string trimmer, and pole saw I have a ton of time. I have a blower coming, I don't expect it to be very power efficient, but I'll have four 2.5s then, so I should be good. I like the battery system though, I had one die and just left it on the charger over a Florida winter and it recovered before I RMA'd it. I can't tell which one it is in my current rotation. The cartridges are the same, so the larger capacity units simply have more cells in them. So they'll be heavier and potentially less protected. I'd use the 5.0n in a mower and blower. And the 2.5s in balanced handheld tools like the pole saw and string trimmer. If I had any 5.0s.

I find the blower is definitely the battery eater.. all the batteries will drain quicker running a blower..

Towards the end of what I was doing though, I noticed the trigger and "cruise control" work a speed controller! If you set a just adequate speed with the "cruise control" then you have a medium burst with the trigger, and a big burst with the turbo button.

That usually signifies the battery is a little to warm to charge, the charger will start with a couple green lights then it picks up on the warmth of the battery and starts flashing red to let you know it’s to warm to charge. Once the battery has sat for just a bit you can put it back in and it will charge. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching..!

Dang neighbors..! Not sure what you’re referring to when you say spinner. A wild guess being motor or blades. I would first try another battery if you can. Then I would recommend checking safety switches and any wires that could cause trouble. You’ll also want to take a Q-tip and some alcohol to the contact points of battery and device.. thanks for watching..!

I bought the weedeater for my wife so she could help me she cant Handel the has stihl lol but anyway my battery bairly lasts 12 min.i contacted the manufacture they are sending me a new battery it's the 40v 2ah I'm pretty sure that what it is it suppost to do a half a acre it hardly gets any done lol so hopefully the new battery lasts longer

The instruction manual states that a battery should do .25 acres (1/4 or quarter). My personal preference is to get a battery that is the max available. I have the 4ah and 5ah. I would not buy a 2ah.

I agree on the bigger battery being much better, and I as well would not purchase a replacement less then the 5ah. Although for now I’m still waiting on one to go bad, over three years of service so far on both my 2.5s and my 5.0. Unfortunately in JPs case stated above, he received a bad battery from the get-go and hasn’t even seen what the 2.5ah can actually accomplish. I appreciate your input, very kind. Lithium batteries aren't dilithium crystals, they don't create power they consume it, they don't manufacture power they eat it. I had to replace my roomba battery 4 times because run time dropped from over hour+ to under hour. Roomba still going over 15 years old but batteries just don't last constant charge/recharge. Simply electric mowers will never out preform a gas mower

Valid point, I’ve been running three pieces of equipment for 6 years off the same three batteries it came with. That’s a ton of use especially when you consider the current property we’re mowing is ten miles of walking to complete it in one day. I’m finally going to replace one of the 5.0ah this year with a 6ah. The calculated savings from gas and maintenance well makes up for the cost of replacement. Thanks for watching.!

Can’t imagine what could’ve happened other than something may have fallen into the pocket under the battery and not allowing it to go down enough to release the lever. A good sturdy push is all I know to suggest. Sorry for your dilemma.. And check the battery pocket for debris when it’s out.

Agreed, but figuring the cost of fuel, oil,& the time invested in upkeep and I believe it would come out considerably cheaper over a 5yr span. That’s a good average life expectancy of these batteries.. I apologize for the delayed response, somehow I missed your entry… Thanks for watching..!
