During an interview performed by Bill Russell when he worked for TBS...Russell is talking with Bird and Red Auerbach, who for my money was the smartest Coach/ GM EVER. And Red pushes the credit to the players saying that "I never scored a single point" Russell then says "Well you're the guy responsible for getting all the guys that scored all those points" Before Red can respond Larry says "So you're overpaid" Russell doubles over laughing and Red just smiles. There are only 2 people in Celtic history that could get away with saying that, even if it was just a joke, and they were both standing there

When Bird was playing in a game he wanted to challenged by the opposing team - that was his motivation. In NBA history only 4 players have had a quadruple double - Bird is not one of them, but could have been. In a 1985 game against the Jazz at the end of three quarters, Boston led 90-68 and Bird, who was already resting comfortably on the bench, had 30 points, 12 rebounds, 10 assists and nine steals. Thinking the Celtics might like to know this information, the stat crew at the Salt Palace sent a note to Celtics coach K.C. Jones. If Bird got one more steal he would have the first quadruple-double in league history involving points, rebounds, assists and steals. Jones went to the end of the bench, knelt in front of Bird and delivered this information. Bird shook his head sideways, left his warmups on, and never re-entered a game the Celtics ended up winning easily. In the visitors locker room, reporters surrounded Bird, asking why he didn’t go back in the game. He said he didn’t see the point. The game was already in hand. Why rub it in? I distinctly remember him saying, “That’s not why I play.” Apparently, numbers didn’t mean that much to him. Bird was all about winning and be challenged. That, not statistics, is what motivated him.

*** Must Read *** This is all you need to know why Larry "The Legend" Bird was so respected. 1. Larry was the only player ever to constantly tell the other team what play the Celtics were running especially in the last shot to win the game, and still they couldn't stop him. 2. The famous Laker's Coach Pat Riley said: "If I had to choose a player to take a shot to save a game, I'd choose Michael Jordan. If I had to choose a player to a shot to save my life, I'd take Larry Bird" 3. Larry was the founder of the 50/40/90 Club. 4. Larry won the first three 3 point contest. Larry was injured at the time of the fourth. Btw, one year he asked who was coming in second, and another year he won player in his warmup jacket. 5. Larry Bird played with a genetic defect in his back. He had no structure stability in his back and yet he played like no other. 6. Michael Jordan never won a tournament against Larry Bird. 7. Larry Bird played against and has beaten all the greats. Now you know why all the greats have so much respect for Larry.

If Magic was 6'9", then Bird was at least 6'10' because every time they are shown together Bird is noticeably taller. And as far as not being "athletic", watch Bird pass, dribble behind his back (in the 1980's!) and score inside and out. Tell me he' not "athletic"? Then realize that Bird had severely injured his back in the summer of '85, so a good part of his career was played with a permanently damaged spine.

Gonna lay some Bird facts on you, just to show you how little respect Bird gets. Bird was a better all around player than Jordan. Look at their stats side by side. Their FG% is practically identical, but Bird had a higher Effective FG%. Bird was a better 3 point shooter, a better free throw shooter, had more assists, had WAY more rebounds, played more minutes, fouled less, was a MUCH better passer, and was arguably the most clutch shooter ever. Jordan had more total points, but he also played 175 games more than Bird. And even at 175 games LESS, Bird had more rebounds and assists. Bird is the ONLY player in NBA history, to retire with totals of at least 20 points per game/10 rebounds per game/5 assists per game. Larry had 24.3/10/6.3. Bird is second in careers win percentage....less than 1/10th of one percent behind Magic, who is first (Jordan is 14th). From 1980-88, Bird got 67% of all MVP votes cast, never finishing lower than 2md. In those years, he finished 2,2,2,1,1,1,2,2. He's only the 3rd NBA player in history (other than Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell) to win 3 MVO's in a row (and the ONLY one that's not a Center). He's the only player in NBA history, to win a championship, MVP, and executive of the year (and also win an Olympic gold medal). He's the founding member of the 50/40/90 club. You will hear that Larry wasn't a good defender, but he led the league in Defensive Win Shares FOUR TIMES (79, 80, 83, 85), and finished 2nd twice. The only other player tied with him on that stat, is Hakeem Olajuwon. The only others to do it more, are George Mikey, Bill Russell, and Tim Duncan. Bird, in my opinion, is the GOAT. The best all around player to ever step on the court.

I say well Bird swept MJ not once but twice in the playoffs. They say well MJ didn’t have a good team. Ok do players win playoffs or do teams? Can’t have it both ways.
