I loved your comparison, many only analyze physical characteristics that in the long run do not make a big difference such as the light, weight or material of the product. I recently bought the kobo libra 2 and although it still did not reach me, I still doubted whether I should have bought a "better known" product, but with your video I am now totally sure of my purchase and very eager for it to reach me! thank you !!

Kindle Paperwhite has a 6-inch screen but Kobo Libra H2O has a 7-inch screen. It may not sound much but that extra 1 inch makes a huge difference if you happen to read pdf in them.

Allow me to bother you with a question, I am intending to get a Kobo/Kindle specifically to read PDFs. The PDFs that I usually read has huge margins on all 4 sides. If I zoom in to eliminate the margin then will the zoom in remain on following pages or do I have to do it on each page?

I am in America. Yes I can send overdrive books to my Kindle. There are a small handful of books that cannot because the Kindle format of the book is not on Overdrive. As for sending a file to my Kindle, I do this with soooo many PDFs that I get for free on the internet. I have my Kindle address in my address book so I just type “MyKindle” on my to address line and the whole address appears. If you type CONVERT in the subject line it will convert the PDF file to MOBI so it is much easier to read on my Kindle because it reads like a Kindle book instead of a PDF file. Thank you for your review!! I appreciate it!!

The Kindle costs MORE because of hidden costs The store states "FROM 94.99". BUT that includes ADS!!! For Ad-free it's 114.99. Add more for the Wifi feature, now it's $209.99. There's MORE. If you order the 7" Kindle, it's now $249.99, and with ad-free and wifi, $349.99! My first device was an early gen. Kindle, and I loved it--only $99. But I'm not spending $350 + tax!

All Kindles have Wifi, that is not a separate feature that you pay for. You must be confusing it with the 3G network feature that is a separate purchase for the Paperwhite and the Oasis. Really not a feature that is needed unless you travel a lot where there is limited wifi access. Amazon also offers a lot of free books and sales on books, so you can make up the cost over time.

i am considering getting kobo as i do like the stats it showing in books but i also heard the software can be very glitchy and devices often freeze, did you had that issue? also i do have kindle[s] and i do looove the time in chapter thing, for me it is actually fairly accurate +/- minute or two, depending how focused i am on the reading XD so maybe yours is just faulty with this, because i have 4 kindles and on each this option is equally accurate for me ;)

The Kindle 3 (the keyboard) had a progress bar at the bottom which was really helpful for seeing where you were in a book. They got rid of it at some point and it was a real shame. I wish they’d bring it back. That book info on the kobo is wonderful! Your kobo device is more comparable to the kindle oasis. Hopefully your kindle has now updated so you’ve got the cover display on sleep function that they recently added!

You can organice your library on Calibre, is a free program for PC. I own a kindle and a Kobo, and I´m able to move the books through my devices that way. If you´re going for a kobo device I strongly recommend the kepub file format (In Calibre), works amazing on kobo devices. If you decide specifically for a kobo libra H2O I recommend to read in landscape mode, it´s waaay more comfortable.

For your Kindle books, if they are not DRM protected, you can convert them easily to ePub or the older MOBI format (I believe Kindle now uses .AMZ or something other than MOBI) using the Calibre software. But if it is DRM protected, you’ll have to strip the DRM protection first using another software which I have not tried. That way, you can side load them to your Kobo Libra. 😉

While I'm a Likebook user as their e-readers are better suited to my more advanced use cases (at the cost of battery life, though), I still recommend Kobo e-readers to people who just want to read books digitally without much additional gimmicks. Also, judging by the hashtag, I can tell that your reading interests are greatly different to mine, so I'll try not to bias my opinions too much. 1. (0:15) (0:31) Ah yes, the "Cobra" e-reader… 🥴 2. (5:25) Ugh, I've had to deal with that! At least with 2 authors Keri Johnson and Alec Anderson. I had asked the former about publishing on Kobo, but I can't remember what he said (I think he had no plans), and I feel too shy to ask the latter about Kobo Writing Life since he's young and I believe his mum handles uploading to Kindle Direct Publishing. 3. (6:28) I did consider signing up for subscription services like Storytel, Scribd, and Comichaus, but I find that I don't read often enough to justify subscribing to such services, except to review in future KZbin videos, and as additional platforms to research as part of some publishing industry research work that I'm working on privately. 4. (9:05) Yeah, I don't like that too. Back when I had my original Paperwhite in 2014, I found that it would encourage me to rush to the end of the book. It only applies to reflowable text e-books, but not print-replica e-books. 5. (9:28) I didn't know I could tap on that! 🤯 5a. I should mention that while I use a Likebook Mimas as my main e-reader, I also have Kobo and Kindle e-readers as part of the aforementioned research project, and to show off in KZbin videos I'm currently working on. 5. (10:02) That confirms to me that Kindle is the iPhone of e-book platforms. 6. (11:11) I too like Kobo's approach much more! Pages left in chapter on the top, and pages left in the book on the bottom! 6a. Likebook has a similar approach, though their implementation, at least in firmware 2.3 (my Mimas still hasn't received firmware 3.x), only displays either pages left in the book or percentage read of the book, however, I can live with that as I usually read reflowable text content on the e-book platform's respective tablet apps, and primarily use the built-in reader app to read print-replica content. 7. (12:16) I do like Kobo's 'Activity' feature too! It even clocks in how long I have read on the e-reader itself! 8. (13:26) Yep, Kindle OverDrive integration is exclusive to the US. As someone who lives in Singapore, I have another reason to recommend Kobo, as their integration is officially supported here. I can of course also use the full OverDrive Libby app on my Likebook, which I do for OverDrive Read & Listen content, and I have the old Media Console app for reflowable text since page transitions can be disabled there but not with Libby. 9. With Kobo's OverDrive integration, it basically pulls the Kobo version of a book, and I can prove that because with "Ozy and Millie" (by Dana Simpson), both reflowable text and print-replica versions are available on Kobo, but only print-replica on OverDrive. If I borrow the OverDrive version, Kobo pulls down the reflowable text version, likely because of how the ISBNs were assigned. 9a. The integration requires that the book be available in both any country's Kobo store and the library's OverDrive collection. 9b. I live in Singapore, where the NLB offers a mobile app and one of the features is the ability to search for and borrow OverDrive titles from that app, then it switches over to Libby (or the Libby reader component in a Web browser) to read. If I borrow a book from there, the library's OverDrive website, or the Libby app, I can then sync my Kobo e-reader and read it there! 10. (15:04) 'Mobipocket' is the actual name of the format, at least according to Wikipedia. 11. (15:07) You can plug Kindle e-readers into a desktop OS device, but while I found it to work on Windows, it doesn't play nice with Linux-based desktop OSes (like Debian, Ubuntu, or Fedora), which is a problem for me as my Calibre library is hosted on my custom NAS, which runs Debian. I can easily copy files to my Kobo e-readers, but not my Kindle e-readers because it'll randomly disconnect while copying files, resulting in errors in Calibre, but with Kobo, it doesn't randomly disconnect. 11a. On Kindle, it only works when copying files into the "documents" folder, but on Kobo, I can just drop files into the device root, though I create my own 'Books' folder in order to keep things neater. 12. (18:34) Me too! 12a. I live in Singapore, where availability of specific regional editions of e-books can be a mess, and I have examples with long explanations of what those are if you want to see those, but it's why I use multiple e-book platforms, in order to increase my chances of getting the edition I want. Outside of that, when it comes to DRM-protected e-books I prefer Kobo when it comes e-books in reflowable text formats (like EPUB), and Play Books for e-books in print-replica formats (like PDF). 13. (18:45) The book cover screensaver feature on Kindle is likely something Amazon is testing only in the US. In other regions, it's only that set of writing-related screensavers that has remained mostly unchanged since the Kindle 4th generation back in 2012 or so, and on the subsidised ad-supported models, adverts are shown there instead, with an additional swipe required after pressing the power button or opening the cover. 14. (18:57) Again, they're supposed to relate to writing, usually relating to writing books or news. The one on-screen there is a close-up of typewriter heads, and at 19:11 in the video that's an inkwell and brush, but other screensavers include printing blocks spelling 'A', 'Kindle', or 'Read', as well as newspapers, fountain pen caps, barrels, or tips, close-up of a calligraphy ink stroke, close-up of an IBM Selectric (typewriter) typing element, and some others. Amazon doesn't allow the screensavers to be replaced. 14a. (19:16) I too like Kobo showing the cover of the last read book on the screensaver! It feels to me like closing or opening a physical book! They don't do it for devices purchased from certain stores like Fnac (in France), but they do it for most of them. Besides that, you can tick 'Show book covers full screen' to get the old firmware 3.x screensaver, or remove the tick from 'Show current read' to instead show a plain screensaver that's just solid white while sleeping or solid black when powered off, with the appropriate status text near the the bottom left. 14b. On Likebook, there's just a single screensaver image, and the user can add their own screensaver images, then select to display a single image, or rotate through the entire folder. However, the images have to be manually scaled. On Boox, however, there are more options and images would automatically be scaled, at least according to a video I saw. 15. (19:44) I agree, even though I never thought of it that way! When I pick up my Likebook, I usually feel like I'm picking up a tablet, also because the case feels like a regular tablet case, but when my imagination is active, I feel like I'm picking up a big hardcover book. When I pick up my Kobo (Clara HD), I do feel like I'm picking up a small book! 16. (19:56) I believe Amazon sells their Kindle e-readers (and Fire products) at a loss or to break even, and that combined with the limited format support, leaves Amazon to recoup profits from book sales, but then users are left to only buy their books from Amazon and nowhere else, whereas I believe Kobo, Boox, and Likebook all have more honest pricing, and those all allow users to get e-books from various places, and on the median and latter, run some Android tablet apps too.

@@rodhernandez4134 Some books I've read make use of bold and/or italic text, and some even have sections within the text where boxes containing additional information (sometimes icons and/or illustrations) would be provided. Also, illustrations, especially in illustrated novels, where they're usually aligned in specific ways, at least in print. As I read illustrated and graphic novels, and have trouble reading plain novels, I can visualise!

This was really interesting, thank you! The time left in chapter & loc on the Kindle really bug me too. The first is NEVER accurate & the later is totally unnecessary imo as it’s meaningless. Being in New Zealand we can’t borrow Kindle books from the library either which is really annoying & means I tend to only borrow audiobooks from my library as I don’t like reading on backlit screens at all. I will definitely be doing some more research on the Kobo to see if we get the same features here that you do in Canada. Merry Christmas 🎄

You’re comparing a 6” Kindle with a 7” Kobo which is about double the price. Although I think that the Kobo is the better choice for many reasons, it’s hardly a fair comparison. It’s like comparing a VW beetle with a Porsche 911.

I personally find Kindle e-readers to be sold at a loss or to break even, considering their limited file format support (in comparison to Kobo) in order to push users towards buying their books only from Amazon and nowhere else. Meanwhile, pricing for Kobo e-readers seems more fair.

It's funny because I just got myself a paper white in November - after having used the kindle app on my iPad for the past 7 or 8 years or so since I broke my first kindle. I was super happy to see the count down feature, but I've also realized that it's not very correct. They definitely seem like some long minutes. Libby is great with the countdown and changes all the time. I have adds on my kindle when it's on pause. I think you can spend more and get it add free. I thought I'd bought mine add free from the Danish store I bought mine from, but I didn't. Turns out the store worker didn't know what that meant. It doesn't bother me too much, because it doesn't show anything when you're reading.

I love having my Kindle and am glad to read off it though I agree it would be nice to have the feature of knowing how many pages are left in a chapter, really understanding reading speed and how long it might take to read to the next chapter. I can see why you're excited about the Kobo with having those features and because it's more Canadian friendly than Kindle tends to be. I am in the U.S. and I've also been tempted to buy a Kobo as I've heard great things about it so it's something I want to keep in mind for the future as the Kobo Libre is much cheaper than the Kindle Oasis in U.S. dollars. I think the feature to display your current read on Kindle is for those whose Kindles don't have adds on them whether you pay for it ahead of time or after having the Kindle.

I think you can drag and drop to the Kindle if you plug it in or use Dropbox to transfer books to your Kobo wirelessly, which I believe keeps them in the Dropbox cloud. I personally find plugging my ereader in to be far less hassle than logging in anywhere or emailing books etc anyway, especially as I usually do a few at a time (downloaded free from Project Gutenberg). The other thing about the Kobo which you didn't mention and really appeals to me is that you can borrow books through overdrive directly on the device whereas you have to log in on something else and send it to your kindle. That alone is why I'm so so tempted to grab a Libra H2O myself. I have an 8th gen kindle but not having a backlight (and just how easily the cheap plastic bezel gets scratched up) really ruins it for me, and my 5 year old Tolino Vision 2 which I bought on a trip to Germany is brilliant but obviously the bookstore isn't really supported here in Australia. Thanks for a great video :)

One thing I will say is that when I want a new book, I just search for it right on the e-reader's browser and download directly to the e-reader!!! I don't use my laptop at all in the process. It downloads automatically and I can start reading instantly. I love the orange light for night reading and that it's waterpoof so I can read in the bath. I found that Kindle Unlimited was disappointing--it was the "Light" reading you mentioned, 40 page books or quickly written, non-quality books. I dropped Kindle Unlimited. My only question is, does Kobo have a selection as large as Amazon? Amazon is the dominant e-publisher in the US, and they have an enormous selection. In comparison, itunes/Apple's selection was noticeably smaller than Amazon when I was searching for specialized book topics.
