I'm ALL about the recipes. I live in my 7 presets and shoot Jpeg + RAW exclusively. Like you said, I'm old enough that I feel like I'm done sitting in front of a computer editing shot after shot for hours on end. I get great results right out of camera. I might crop. I might do a curves layer. Boom! I'm done.

If you don't know Bill Fortney, he is a Pulitzer Prize winner, NASA trainer, Pro sports shooter, and landscape guru...he only shoots jpegs. In an interview with FujiLove, he discussed how he shoots the image in three different simulations and then selects from them. Building recipes is something I think I will checkout...thanks Andrew.

Yes, you can do that with bracketing and choose three built in sims. I still haven’t found a way to use my custom sims with bracketing but maybe with Fuji Raw X Studio?

As someone who's been shooting since the 1960's, I shot a bit of Kodachrome 64 and I think Fuji's "Classic Chrome" is much closer to Ektachrome than Kodachrome. Ektachrome is like Kodachrome, but less warm and bluer. I still have some Kodachrome in my freezer (along with other films I saved when I switched to digital 20 years ago) ...

I've had my Fujifilm xt-1 voor a week now and it's amazing. I don't have a fuji glass on it for it's over my budget. So I'm using the minolta md 50mm f2. I'm loving the results!!

I’ve been aware of Fuji recipes since I got my first Fuji in 2013 and have been using them since over the years. It’s so much fun to come up with a cool in camera look and do minor adjustments in post. Back then the “DSLR pros” would think I’m shooting film and were blown away when I would share my jpegs with them out of camera but at that time they were too proud to make the switch because mirrorless at that time was like a toy camera in their eyes.

I still shoot with an X-E1 that I bought new back in 2013. I might upgrade soon but I also feel very proud with what I've shot on JPG using the built in settings. I will say though that I've spent a lot of time tweaking settings (and made probably 1000s of temporary shots) because I can't use Fujis studio software. I also can't use C1 or LR Fuji profiles. This is pretty much the only reason I want to upgrade to XPro! Lol.

Andrew & Denae love it so far, I’ve not taken the 5D out since I got it. I’ve found that it’s changed how I shoot, slowing me down. It really does feel like using a film camera. My only negative is the small size with my big hands, however once I can find and pick up a hand grip that should help.

I really like your content and the way you convey ideas so clearly and eloquently. Good job!! One thing about Kodachrome is it had a very compressed dynamic range, so shooters had to find a sweet spot when shooting.It was the film I shot every chance I get. The thing about Richie’s recipe is that the skies look more Portra than Kodachrome; the recipe, as you noted, works well in certain settings but not so well in others. And so, I’ve gone back to RAW and using presets to get me the Kodachrome look (though I have yet to find a preset that renders skin like real Kodachrome). Keep creating your great content!

Thank you for that recipe. The soft tones and less contrast is lovely and it replaced the Kodachrome 64 in my X100V. I already have a few high contrast, saturated recipes so this is a perfect addition.

Nice video. I love to read Fuji X Weekly. I almost always shoot RAW+JPEG. Most of my photography is as an enthusiast but I do occasionally shoot a paying job. When I am shooting for money I generally use your first profile as it is other most efficient and allows more flexibility. However when shooting for fun I love to pick either a recipe I have read about or one I came up with on my own and constrain myself for the entire shoot or day. Sometimes it is fun to do it with just one prime lens chosen before I start. It truly is all about the process with Fuji. Thanks for sharing and good luck on your workshops.

I’ve been shooting JPEG+Raw since the holidays and I like the workflow of having JPEGs I can instantly share but having the raw to mess with when I either miss exposure a bit or want to tweak something special. Usually do Classic Chrome with a slight purple WB adjustment. Got to toy with some of the recipes since the X-T2 doesn’t have all the adjustments, but such a fun way to keep things fresh.

I looooooove shooting jpeg with my Fuji x100f. I definitely understand why people shoot in raw, and I do on occasion, but it's just nice to be able to point and shoot and what you get is what you get, and it's based off of your initial understanding of how your camera works.

So glad you made this video Andrew! I LOVE Richies Portra 400, Kodachrome 64, and Tri-x sims. It’s nice to see the simulation of the film in the viewfinder. Oh yeah!!! You’re right us Fuji shooters many of us came from film. I later left Sony for Fuji all because it brings back the romance of analog photography. The film simulations are the icing on the cake after having all the dials and tactile feel of shooting. I still feel a connection to legacy photography and everything analog shooting Fuji. It really gives you the best of both worlds. Fuji cameras really grow on you. Thanks again for all your Fuji videos and thanks for being loyal to this Fuji community. You didn’t fall for Sony for more clicks and leave like some former Fuji you tubers did. Thanks!

Brother, this was a revelation to me. I have done my 10,000 hours processing RAWs and I have switched to Fuji precisely to get back to basics - and a big part of that is shooting JPEGs. I hadn't even considered RAW processing applications, and certainly not Fuji's. However, this will be EXTREMELY useful for developing a few versatile recipes that I can rely on for the JPEG results that I am looking for. Thank you!

One thing I'll say about all of the "film recipes" as someone that shoots almost exclusively film is that it makes zero sense to have white balance adjustment for a color negative film recipe (I know that kodachrome is slide film, so this is more of a general comment about film recipes). If you've ever scanned color negative film you know just how much editing a scanner, or inversion software does to that final image. If we're talking about lab scans then the image will be hugely influenced not just by the scanner used, but by the lab tech that is calibrating and running that scanner, and applying tweaks to the overall images. So I personally find it so silly that any color negative recipes adjust the white balance when color negative film doesn't have inherent casts to it. Slide film you could certainly make a case for since what you see is more or less what you get. Great video, and apologies for a comment that's somewhat divorced from the video itself :-P

I shot Kodachrome 64 in Hong Kong, China, Thailand,The Philippines, Australia. When Fuji Velvia came out that was the end of that. K64 was almost as contrasty as lith film in sunlight. Took a week to come back from the lab - but - they are still as good as new - 40 years later. Must go through them one day

I used Kodakchrome. I loved 25 ISO colors. I tried those film simulations 2 years ago. The JPEGs rendered great under good lighting conditions. Agfachrome was great too. My least favorite was Ektachrome.

Been trying some of Ritchies recipes more and more lately. So far I haven't found any of them the hit the spot. For some reason they don't allways end up in the x-t2 as they do on the website. However the Kodachrome recipe for the x-t2 sensor combined with a fast aperture lens like kamlan a moody day in the forrest at fall makes for some really moody shots!

Great video! I've never tried Kodachrome either, but we have some old slides at home. That magic look is why I still love using my Leica M9, even if it is sloooooooow by today's standards. Superb looking jpegs straight from the camera is mildly addictive :-) And that sensor was developed by Kodak specifically to resemble Kodachrome!

Such a great idea Andrew. I just found these recipes and glad I did! Very inspiring to use, almost like loading a roll of film, to me anyway. My Xpro2 seems to have a few recipes on the Fuji X Weekly site which I am trying out. I had the please in my youth to shoot with analogue including Kodachrome 64 so I am tending to favor the Kodachrome II recipe just now, also the mono TriX oh yeah and the Ilford HP5 of course, spent many a long hour in my loft darkroom with this. Oh boi. Fuji colours are a godsend for video! I personally prefer classic chrome -2 colour, -4 highlights, -4 shadows and -4 sharpening. Gives me a real filmic look and it's still quite gradeable. For a commercial high key look I'd advice ProNeg Standard with everything toned down. It's gives vibrant yet subtle colours in a bright environment and is super flexible for later grading. Have fun!

They wrote songs about Kodachrome. It's almost like taking it away was Kodak's middle finger to digital. I'm really glad to see folks continue to try and mimic it. I shot with it in the late 1980's and the 90's. I'm not sure it can be duplicated in a way that enables it's "look" in a broad range of shooting situations. As I recall it wasn't very forgiving of exposure errors. I really miss Kodachrome, especially Steve McCurry's work with it. It was a "do everything" film. The closest thing I've been able to do is adjust exposure in RAW like usual if needed and then apply the Fuji Classic Chrome film simulation. From there I adjust the saturation sliders and boost the contrast. Classic Chrome emulates blues and especially skies almost exactly like Kodachrome but the other colors not so much. Digital photographers are obsessed with dynamic range but the 1980's Kodachrome look in Nat Geo was contrasty, saturated (but not overcooked like Velvia) and almost appeared underexposed in many cases.

The ability to use recipes is the greatest driver for me to purchase a new camera. I love my X-T1 but the number of things you can tweek is limited. I have a recipe I like for monochrome in my X-E2. So I won't switch to X-E3.

What an awesome video along with the website Fuji X Weekly. X-T20 isn't the best for these since it can only save 3 WB shifts (although some recipes have same or close WB shifts so you can work around) and the option for CC FX Blue for instance isn't present but the outcome is very close to the great pictures presented in this video. Made shooting even more fun.

This is for real though a good thing to do for professional working photographers, Ken Rockwell for example uses Nikon for the purpose that he can push the JPG images and sell them right off camera.

I shot jpeg like film. Shooting RAW seems wasteful, unless I'm shooting beauty or products. I think the fuji systems work so much better this way and speeds up my work flow a ton. Its really a film camera without having to buy an develop film, once I started treating my camera like that my pictures came out 10x better.

Hello. Excellent work. You have got me excited. I started digital photography with a Fujifilm s1500 and a ccd sensor. I changed a couple of DSLR's since then but i never gained the excellent colours of that kit. Now i was thinking to go back to Fuji again. I would like your advice on which camera has ALL the film simulation modes and can shoot me raw+jpg like you showed in the video. Beginning from the most affordable one 😉 . I'm just going to throw this out there for any Nikon shooters, you can do something very similar using Nikon's Picture Control Utility and you can actually create a file on your system and upload the picture profile to your camera. Fuji has some great out of the box profiles but if you wanted to you could create some nice custom profiles for your Nikon as well. I currently have a Fuji Neopan inspired black and white profile loaded on my Coolpix A. I been shooting both RAW and JPEG and I got to say the JPEGs are really really good. I have heard in the past of photographers loading up profiles to emulate those "Canon Colors" that people like. I believe canon also allows you to do something similar. I wish Fuji would allows you to create sharable profiles like Nikon does. I think you can use one of the Fuji utilities to backup your camera settings but I don't think there is a easy way to share profiles other than to manually punch in the settings.

Thank you for this! I think I may dive deeply into some of those recipes... However, I have already been searching for some time for a recipe for Agfa CT18. I used to use this a lot, alongside Kodachrome 25 and Fuji Velvia. It was a great film, although more grainy than those others. Not as much latitude as the Kodak, and a bit unforgiving sometimes, but then this was also true for Velvia. If you got the light and exposure just right, the results could easily be better than those other films. It was also my go-to film for portraiture. Maybe I'll just have to continue to experiment....

This is the reason I picked up a Fuji XE4 today. Love all the recipes Ive seen on other videos! My main camera is a Canon R6, but I have a feeling I will be using the Fuji a lot! By the way, can you set different recipes to different custom settings? Need to find out how to do that if so.

Well, when I was shooting K64 back in the 80s, there was no such term (at least I never heard of it) "Dynamic Range" and when I heard you state that Kodachrome had a wide dynamic range, my first thought was, he must mean "exposure latitude" which most slide films had very little of. Under or overexposing by more than a 1/2 a stop was asking for trouble, most photogs, myself included would shoot a half stop under for addition saturation and still bracket like crazy. Researching further I do see that there is a difference between exposure latitude and dynamic range. E6 films were a bit more forgiving and you could "push" or "pull" during processing but it was advisable not to go beyond 1 stop in either direction. Due to the increasing inability of getting rolls of K64 processed overnight, I pretty much stopped shooting Kodachrome around 1992 or so moved over to Fujichrome, loved the hell out of Velvia and Provia. Still, it was the best intro I began to shoot slides in the late 70s, it taught me a great deal on metering a scene and exposing correctly and while it was a pain in the ass film to master, I do indeed miss it, a true photographic icon. Funny, having shot only a week wirh a Fuji body, naturally I'm still memorizing the important settings first. But after shooting fine square format black and white, I'm more interested in getting a look that suggests a lot of silver in a paper, some age to it, and some zone magic. That all means low horizon light, tripod, etc. Really looking forward to shooting urban stuff in winter light. ( it doesn't snow here) Also interested in color, but not color from chrome. Color and tonal scale from Fuji large format negative. I printed in a custom lab for 15 years. Scanned a huge amount of 4x5 negs, being asked to match transparencies. That takes a lot of time. Clients got their monies worth. You needed two files. One to match the Chromes, and another that would output to photo paper run through chemistry. A straight match to the chrome would not print a match. Ever. But they only wanted to pay for one file. So you kept your version on the drive at the lab as long as you could.

I am doing RAW+JPG, when I copy photos to Lightroom, I remove the RAW SD card and only let the JPG show up. If I feel I want more editing in a specific picture, I remove the JPG card and insert the RAW one and copy the photo. Best of both worlds for me.

A really useful explanation. I really miss Kodachrome II /25, my favorite soft film certain landscapes and nature scenes. I am trying various recipes on my Fuji XT20. One thing though is the music in this video is so loud that I can barely hear your voice.

Been shooting Fuji for over 2 years now and prided myself in knowing a lot about the system, but I've *never* heard of this recipe thing. And I even shoot mostly in JPEG (but edit in VSCO), damn.

Hi Andrew, I frequently follow your videos and Ritchie's posts. I love the look of Kodachrome but I feel that, at least in the latest version of Kodachrome 64 for the X-T4 / X-Pro3 / X100V, the amount of yellow and contrast slightly exceeds my tastes. In the recipe you share at the end of the video I missed your setting for "clarity". I assume you leave it by default at 0 or am I wrong? A big hug from Chile! 🇨🇱
