Kodak Portra 160 is a 35mm pro color negative film that's great for skintones and great detail! I'm taking a closer look at some examples and breaking down the characteristics you might see when shooting this type of film and what it's best for.

I used this film long long time ago, around 20 years ago. In that time this film existed in two different versions NC (neutral colour) and VC (vivid colour). I bought a can of 30 m of NC version, and I remember I thought it was a little bit soft in colours. Later I regret to got NC instead VC. The current version looks to me as original NC. The more funny thing is that the 30,5m can was 36€ 😶

When you use the red border for videos it tricks me into thinking the watch bar is full and I’ve already seen the video! I almost didn’t watch this because of it so be careful of that, might be better to choose a different color.

I just tried this film recently in a newly acquired Minolta Maxxum 5. Very pleasing results. I did a few indoor portraits with flash but mostly used outdoors in bright sun.

I bought this film on a recommendation from the camera store clerk and was very happy with the results. The price point at $20/roll in my area makes it the same price as my camera … but it was very good at capturing my excursions on the Appalachian Trail, from the forest floor to the harsh midday light, it delivered. P.S. use a tripod.

Great video! I completely forgot to change my cameras Iso from 800 to 160 :( Cant find a good lab that could push it while developing so hoping for the best haha

I would love to see a return of a tungsten balanced Portra. I'm looking back at old film stocks and I'm just amazed at the variety and choices people had. Variety and choices I *don't* have.

This is probably an odd request, but could you do a roll review of Lomography's Peacock Slide 110? It's a really unique film that doesn't get a lot of attention. It's the only color reversal slide film available in 110 fromat, Kodak stopped making slide films in 110 back in 1982. It's also a 200 ISO slide film, which is really unusual. I believe it is technically the fastest speed slide film available on the market today, as the only others I can think of are ISO 100 or 50. Dwaynes Photo and The Darkroom are two labs I know of in the United States that have the ability to develop, scan, and print 110 slide film.

Definitely a more obscure one, but I would like to get into a wider variety of formats in the future for sure!

I find this film as "Okay". But I believe you may have understated or not mentioned, that this film is saturated by the color Red. If you re-watch this video, you will see any object or person wearing a red garment, or have pinkish complexion, the red is Extremely super bright. And to me personally, this blows it for this film. Everything else would be fine. We need to remember, its called "Portra" for its specific design of Portraits. So I will go with Portra 400 for equal color levels.

I recently took a picture of a wooden bench that was painted red in the lot of flowers around it some of which were red. I definitely noticed portra 160 red saturation. The bench was a little bit of a lighter red than the flowers were. I still like the way the photo came out.

Hmm, sounds like original Kodak Vericolor II (VPS, nominally ASA 125) film of the 20th century. This professional portrait studio film had specific versions: VPH, ASA 400, for available light wedding photography, and VPL, ASA 100 (Tungsten) for "dragging-the-shutter" exposures longer than 1/10 second. Replaced by Vericolor III, and Portra versions. Coming from the Kodachrome II/25 era, hearing that ISO 160 is a "low speed film: sounds bizarre. (High Speed Ektachrome was an ASA 160 color slide film that could be pushed to ASA 400.) These were the days of ASA 80 Kodacolor-X, where color film was as s-l-o-w as black-and-white was "fast" as ASA 400.

Yep, this film definitely has the Vericolor look. I shot a lot of Vericolor III in the early 1990´s. This is one of my favorite color negative films in the market today. I like this film stock more than the more popular Portra 400, and not just for portraits.

How much does it cost you on average to buy a roll, get the negatives developed and the positives printed and digitally scanned?
@AnalogResurgence
@AnalogResurgence 4 жыл бұрын
For the developing and scanning It will usually come in around $12 for a roll. The film depends on what kind it is, with something like slide film being the most expensive at around $20.

@@AnalogResurgence Whoa! 😮 That is hella cheap. Here in Dallas, it's in the high fifties for developing a single roll.

I went on the PO site and bought 4 packs of color. Get it while you can. Used some points to get $20 off. Very sad, probably would have been better if they had never brought it out in the first place, would seem less like a FAIL now. But I do recall that back in the day when I did lots of chasing down people who walked through BG of shots on Candid Camera ('91 or '92) we briefly tried Spectra and it was more trouble even then. 600 was blander and less sharp but worked 99.99% of time.

Surprised that they’ve decided to stop all together. Not happy, when it worked it worked really well and the black and white in that size was my favourite. Thinking about how I lack the funds to start stockpiling it for the future.....

I experienced always a visible shift with Kodak 160 into the cyan/blueish with some desaturation of red. I have always to apply some color correction when scanning from the base setting for this film. Biggest pros fore me with this film is low grain and natural skin colors with corrected white balance. Overall, not my preferred film for outdoor landscapes but good for portraits.
@joeltunnah
@joeltunnah 4 жыл бұрын
Martin's Analog Photo Channel, you’ll see those color shifts when underexposing Portra 160. Also big chunky grain. Definitely recommend getting your exposure correct or overexposing it a bit.

Portra 160 seems to be the black sheep. Nobody loves this one lol. All the love is given to 400 and 800. It's almost always one of the last to sell out, right next to Cinestill 50D. Even worse, it has to fight with Ektar and Ektachrome when it comes to any sort of landscape shots. I hear that overexposing it though can really bring out the colors, making it good competition for Ektar.

You could really do with a better scanner.
@derekkonigsberg2047
@derekkonigsberg2047 4 жыл бұрын
And not zooming in so far on a 35mm negative. Might be time to start trying medium format. I have a really good scanner, and 35mm looks like that when I zoom in too far. Of course just watching on my monitor is already bigger than an 8x10 print. (I've only shot Portra 160 in medium format myself, and it looked really good when well scanned.)
@Frisenette
@Frisenette 4 жыл бұрын
Derek Konigsberg what is a really good scanner? Epson XXX? Or Opticfilm “something”? Try macro scanning or just looking at your negative through a microscope. Those are barely 6 MP equivalent scans. 135 is capable of far far better.
@derekkonigsberg2047
@derekkonigsberg2047 4 жыл бұрын
I use a Nikon CoolScan 9000, which is probably the second-best non-drum scanner you can get. I also have an Epson V850 for larger formats than the Nikon can handle, but the Nikon is fantastic for 135 and 120. (Only downside is that it's kinda slow if you have a lot of frames, and you basically have to get it used.)
@Frisenette
@Frisenette 4 жыл бұрын
Derek Konigsberg if you truly get results comparable to what in the video in resolution, then something is wrong with your scanner. With a macro lens and DSLR setup I can easily outdo any scanner though (except maybe a good calibrated drum scanner).
@derekkonigsberg2047
@derekkonigsberg2047 4 жыл бұрын
There are limits to what kind of useful resolution you can get out of any particular film. If you scan a 35mm frame at something 20MP+ and then display it zoomed to 100%, it's going to look like crap. (Of course not all film is equal, and often E-6 film will get more effective resolution than B&W or C-41.) That's really what I was referring to in my original comment.
