My best friend in this world committed suicide just over a week ago. This was our song. It was so special to us in a way words cannot explain. I loved her so much. The depression, unfortunately, finally won out. I truly thought she was having an OK day/night by her standards. I guess not. At least I got to say, "I love you" one last time, and hear the same back from her. I'll never forget you. How could I? High hopes, K. High hopes. Edit (a month later): Her name is Katherine. Was Katherine. I called her Kat for the most part, but when conversations got serious I often switched to Katherine. Time has not yet healed, but it has helped. My family has helped. My friends have helped. You have helped. I cannot thank everyone enough for that. Your support has been incredible. I was not expecting anyone to even see this since it's a very popular video, but I thank you all who have liked, commented, or just taken the time to read what I said. All of it has meant the world to me. Thanks again. Edit #2 (January 12, 2019, likely final update.): Thank you again for all the support. It's way, way more than I ever expected, and I'm sorry to hear a lot of you have either dealt with similar situations or are depressed themselves, but you people are some of the kindest I've ever come across. Seriously. Your comments have meant so much and I'm sorry I haven't gotten around to most of them. Just know your words have not gone unnoticed. I have been trying to stay as strong as I can, but Christmas was rough. It was her favorite holiday and it... just wasn't good. It couldn't possibly be the same without her. Katherine had lupus and was really struggling with it the last months of her life. I'm hoping to make an annual lupus walk that she participated in every year in her honor. It won't be easy as I have serious medical problems myself, but I think it's important that I make it. Again, thank you, everyone. You're amazing people. Much love and all the best to you.

I'm so sorry about your friend. The reason I wanted to comment on what you've written here is that I want you to know I believe you were a great friend to her. Having depression, I know there are a lot of people that want to understand it or be there for you when you're in need, but that often doesn't happen, not in the way you might need it to. That's ok, it isn't their fault, that's just the way it is. But reading what you have written about losing your friend to depression, I feel like you really did understand and were there for her. You had a song, you loved each other and told each other, you spoke to her and wondered about how she was doing. You understand that 'an ok day' means something completely different to someone with depression as opposed to normal standards. You understand that it was the depression that 'won'. I admire that. I hope you're ok, having lost someone so close to you.

Tatum Cooper Wow. Thank you so much for what you said. It was beautiful and I can't tell you how much that means to me. I have tears in my eyes, but happy tears. You are an incredibly sweet person and just know you've made a major impact on this guy, just with those words. If you're ever feeling more down than usual and need to talk to someone, please feel free to message me. Sometimes it helps to just talk to a stranger. And that offer is open to anyone reading this. If you're having an awful day and want to talk with someone else than who you usually talk with in your time of need, I promise I will get back to you as soon as I can. Thank you again, Tatum Cooper. You have a beautiful heart. I hope you know that. Much love to you. -Kevin

I don't usually comment on other people or videos because the internet can be a bit of a scary place, but there are some incredible people too, like you! I'm so happy to hear you got my message and that you're happy to have gotten it. Thank you for the compliments and the generous offer, Kevin; it's so incredibly kind of you. I will keep that in mind. Again, thank you, thank you, thank you; your reply to what I said just proves my point of how great and understanding you are. Much love to you too, and you are very welcome to call me by my first name only :), -Tatum

I was walking around my neighbourhood this evening. It had just rained a while ago. The cold winds and the smell of soil was just inviting me to take a walk. So I started off listening to my regular music - Metal, rap, K-Pop, progressive rock/metal and polyrythmic instrumental music. I was thinking about where I am going to be in the next 5 years, thinking of placements, higher studies, my poor physique and health and how I am behind in everything when I compare myself to my peers. While I was pondering about all these, I didn’t realize it had turned dark and I had come a bit far from my house. But then suddenly it started raining. I saw everyone around me rushing for shelter. I might have also went for shelter, but something inside me said me to keep walking. While all of this was happening, Kodaline’s “High Hopes” started playing. For a moment, I just stopped walking, just stood there in the middle of the road and faced upwards towards the sky and felt the rain droplets hit me while the beautiful piano chords of the song played in the background. I don’t know what it was. But I felt alive in that very moment. And it was just genuine happiness. I don’t think I have felt happiness in a very long time. I don’t know if it was “happiness” at that very moment that I felt. But I was at peace. I was happy to be alive. I was happy that my parents are alive and healthy. They might not be perfect but I love them so much. My brothers are alive and I love them so much. I have friends who actually love and care for me. I have so much and yet I never took a moment to appreciate it all. *Edit:* Being on the internet, I have only seen people be rude and unkind to each other. I never expected people to read this. The fact you all gave your precious time to read this already means the world to me. I see your kind words everyday and it just fills me up with joy and makes my day so much better. I strongly believe we all should be kind and loving to each and everyone regardless of gender, religion, caste, language and place. The world is a beautiful place and we all have a part in making this world a better place. I am really glad that the small experience I had that day could somehow maybe make your day a tad bit better. *Sending you all amazing people warm virtual hugs and just so you know -* *YOU ARE PRECIOUS AND YOU MATTER SO MUCH. THERE ARE PEOPLE WHO LOVE YOU NO MATTER WHAT. DON'T LOSE HOPE, WE ARE IN THIS TOGETHER AND WE ALL WILL GET THROUGH THIS.* *~ROSHAN SAMANTARAY*

I loved a girl once, she was everything i hoped for. We had something for a few months but i knew she had yet to move on from the guy she loved before me. I had to let her go because i know i'll never be able to give her the happiness she deserves, i always think i'll never be enough and when she finally move on from that guy she may find someone better and completely forget about me. I was in the right place at the wrong time. And up to this day i still hope our paths will cross again.
@JoseMaria-ng1qp5 жыл бұрын
I was at the same position as you man.. And guess what? I had to move on. There's an amazing text that if you haven't read, you should... In my case she was a reason. "People come into your life for a reason, a season, or a lifetime. When you figure out which it is, you will know exactly what to do. When someone is in your life for a REASON, it is usually to meet a need you have expressed outwardly or inwardly. They have come to assist you through a difficulty, to provide you with guidance and support, to aid you physically, emotionally, or spiritually. They may seem like a godsend, and they are. They are there for the reason you need them to be. Then, without any wrongdoing on your part or at an inconvenient time, this person will say or do something to bring the relationship to an end. Sometimes they die. Sometimes they walk away. Sometimes they act up or out and force you to take a stand. What we must realize is that our need has been met, our desire fulfilled; their work is done. The prayer you sent up has been answered and it is now time to move on. When someone is in your life for a SEASON, it is because your turn has come to share, grow, or learn. They may bring you an experience of peace or make you laugh. They may teach you something you have never done. They usually give you an unbelievable amount of joy. Believe it! It is real! But, only for a season. And like Spring turns to Summer and Summer to Fall, the season eventually ends. LIFETIME relationships teach you lifetime lessons; those things you must build upon in order to have a solid emotional foundation. Your job is to accept the lesson, love the person or people involved; and put what you have learned to use in all other relationships, and areas of your life. It is said that love is blind but friendship is clairvoyant. Thank you for being a part of my life." ~ Brian A. (Drew) Chalker

4 years ago I used to listen to this song when I was 17 and I was dreaming about going to the most prestigious university in my country, but it was extremely hard to get in! I used to cry thinking that I did not have any chance. And today, after 4 years I came across this song and was crying because was not feeling good about my life and was thinking that I am not working hard enough. Just suddenly remembered that I achieved this 17 year-old girl's dream and became penultime year engineering student already with these passing 3 years being the top of my faculty. She would be so proud of me! I should be proud of me too. Now i have new dreams, new hopes. I hope I will come back 4 years later with achieving my new goals. Thank you, Kodaline, for making me remember how much I have achieved so far.

i read online that the end part with the hospital was the man after the gas inhalation. the girl was just a dream/hallucination/memory, and at the end it was her spirit that hugged him to show that she was always with him. apparently the big age difference between the couple was because the woman was a memory of his past, and if she was still alive, she would be as old as him.

This video is beautiful. I believe that the main man and woman did not know each other prior to the car scene. The main guy wanted to kill himself but when the lady ran to him for help, he decided to go, "fuck it, get in the car." He lets her stay with him probably after learning the fact that the other guy beats her. They then slowly fall in love. The end is damn meaningful as he started out as someone who wanted to die, but when they were shot he crawled to her, held her hand, and at the moment he didn't want to die anymore. This video is the physical embodiment of "high hopes, when you let it go, go out and start again." When you feel like there's nothing left to live for, have hope that something will come your way to make life worth living. Sorry for the long paragraph, I just love Kodaline's music videos!

It's same for me either, I know this song since my 13, when I was quite depressed and wished I was not alive, now I'm 18 and I'm still struggling with my mental health, it's hard, it really is, but I'm here, still listening to this song, knowing, that it will be okay. It is okay. Because some things are everlasting - like songs, like this... it gives a little bit of hope, Kodaline does.

After Jesus, beyond the Holy Spirit is living inside me, I can tell you for sure, there's a way to be really happy! Search for Jesus and if you are close to a Universal Church, search for it and speak to a pastor. You will find the happiness you are looking for.

My metaphorical interpretation: Two souls trying to escape their current situations, and by finding one another inadvertently save the other. Their souls intermingle, begin to heal, and even find a sense of happiness through each other....only to be shot down by reality. Alone again, with only the memory of the other to help carry on. The story of our lives.

I used to wake up with my ex gf with this song as a morning alarm. One day she told me it made her sad waking up with it, probably cuz of the lyrics, so I changed it for something happier. Though through days and days it became one of our favorite song. Now it's been almost 2 years we broke up, but damn, I can still see her by my side every damn time I hear this. Don't ask me why but I eventually put it back as an morning alarm those days. I'm not willing to get sad in the morning, but you know.. just.. good ol'time. We were stupidly in love back in those days, but also we were just 20yo kids acting like real adults. I'll keep the good memories and just go on in life. I'll eventually find a new girlfriend, get married, have children (well I hope I will :) !), but I'll always remember of her while listening to this song. That's what is 'Life'.. a bunch of memories tied to little things that you may go through day-by-day.. Whoever read this little text, have a good day and keep the will of living :)

I love this song. The vocal holds so much emotion. The video was shot in Ballyrogan House in County Wicklow, Ireland. I lived and worked in that house with my old friend Andy Manson (he still lives there). I spent a few bitterly cold winters working on a series of abstract paintings in my studio upstairs, while Andy painted some exquisite little landscape paintings in his studio across the hall. We spent the evenings beside the fireplace, drinking elderflower wine and talking bollox in the little, warm, book-lined room downstairs, while the freezing wind howled through every crack and under every door in the house...This video brought it all back to me.

Don't you see how these "little stories" can confuse a person first hearing a song, they think they like the song but it's the "movie" they like. Just have someone listen to a song without the video and they'll know for sure if they like the song or not. Music videos were a breakthrough idea but in the long run they ruined new music for so many people who just want to hear a song, nothing else. Don't watch your music, listen to it. ♪

and i think the painting and the sock/gloves she wears throughout the story might have some meanings. also the wound on her back. the painting looks like there's so much red/blood in it, the socks/gloves she hold earlier was clean but then when they're in hospital it turns dirty (and she didn't wear it in the shooting scene, then how did she still had it with her?), and the wound on her back idk but it might be the 'actual' shot wound? ps: the way she came to his place seems like her first time. it's really weird for such a couple that so much in love. so i think this might be just his projection of her after losing her?

oh what, can you explain the storyline bc i dont seem to get it @thomas evans
@thomasevans4578 жыл бұрын
I studied this song for my degree. To be fair I wanna start by saying technically this song means anything you want it to, if you want it to have a happy ending then I don't wanna distract you from that view. In my view, and the creators view I think, the whole story reflects from the very beginning. Notice the sock on the woman's hand in the car? It's a visionary symbol. At the end, both characters are injured and the man wakes up in a hospital bed. The nurse is making the bed of someone who recently died (we suggest this is his girlfriend). At the very end the man is staring out of the window look devastated, suggesting that his girlfriend didn't make it. She then hugs him, but notice the slight white glow on her skin? Oh and the return of the sock? - She's dead, she's a ghost. She now lives as part of his own feelings and provides the man with hope to keep on living (Hence the lyrics in the song). This songs video is very upsetting but tells the tale of a beautiful love story between two characters. Love it! - Thanks for reading my interpretation!

Whenever I feel very empty. I am always going back to this song. I always have high hopes for everything. I don’t wanna lose this as this is the only thing that holds me, with my feet on the ground and keeps my world spinning and moving forward. It is sad knowing that you’ll exist in this world feeling empty and will be facing the everyday life only to know that you’ll feel empty again. Still, going back to what I wanted with this song, I have high hopes. This world will keep on spinning. I hope that I will never be stuck in the same condition over and over again. Maybe someday and I hope I deserve something better.💖

I still think my favorite part of the video is how he runs his fingers over her wounds on her back like she runs her fingers over his paintings. It’s like they are discovering each others wounds.
@FalishaFae1018 жыл бұрын
i feel like she died and he drove back to the place where they first met to commit suicide. and the scenes with them together is him hallucinating and he knows, when he allows her to look about his apartment he seems uneasy and then he sees the bruising on her back, maybe happened when she died? i believe she is so young because that may be how old she was when she died and after so many years he finally gave up hope on ever finding that happiness again. and i believe him sitting in the hospital staring out the window when she came up and hugged him is when he was recovering from the gunshot wound. maybe we are seeing him older in the hospital because he is hallucinating and that is what he looks like now but he is actually younger when it actually happened? and at the end of the video he knows he is hallucinating and accepts it. or i am just way off base and have no clue what im talking about. also a big possibility.
@FalishaFae1018 жыл бұрын
or i read way to much into and it happened exactly like the video depicts it where this runaway bride basically saved him from committing suicide, they end up falling in love but then the guy she left at the alter comes back to kill them. im lretty sure she actually died because how would she get the sock? ..
@ShadowInTehDarkness7 жыл бұрын
Pretty sure he just wasnt happy and wanted to die, but before he could die in a spot he felt comfortable he saw this girl and decided to help/rescue her because of the kindess in his heart, to feel more for another rather than himself ... And he fell in love ...and she fell in love...and they grew to learn about each other other while they learned to not just survive..but live...and the jealous groom thought of her as everything...a ''if i cant have her no one can'' sort of love..cuz she was his everything, so he tracked her down, shot both, then fled...they woke up in the hospital and stilll had each other... and everything works out thru the pain if you hold on and give it a chance.. Thats my depressed yet hopeful interpretation. Yours is fine too. But I just wanted to run mine by you. Never give up hope...even when you think life has passed you by.. because maybe life passed you by, but you're entire world didnt. You just havent met you're entire world yet hehe..
@aasthapuspalak7 жыл бұрын
FaLisha Ashcraft Your idea sounds legit if we will consider the lyrics but then she doesn't look that much young in her wedding dress to say that he was hallucinating. Also she got shot in abdomen but the bruise is on her left shoulder blade.

Read this if you have ever felt alone, depressed, suicidal, lost, scared, worthless, abandoned, or anything of that nature, this is for you You Are Beautiful. You Are Wanted. You Are Wonderful. Don't quit on yourself. Don't hurt yourself. You are worth the world and nobody wants to see you suffering. This is not the end. The way you feel right now will pass. Peoples minds will change. Things WILL get better. We love you and are always here for you. Do NOT do something permanent over something temporary. You're better than that. All stars need to see darkness before the light. And always remember, Don't change so people will like you. Be yourself & the right people will find and love the real you. Your own unique Mindset always trys to engage in the right ways Now read the first letter of every word You Matter! no matter what other people may say. Always know this is true. It helps. You are worth my time to write this. I do care.

How time flies. Back in 2014 after I met you and we started being together I was singing this song to myself and crying from happiness going back home. Sadly things didn't work out, and now its September 2017.. 1 year and 2 months since we broke up, and I still think about you, I still miss you, I still love you, and now I am crying on this song from sadness. How time flies, how everything changes before our eyes. I hope one day I meet you again.. for the first time J.K. :\

this video is about hope. As all hopes were gone, the man was about to end his life by suiciding in the beginning of the video. The woman coming from the hills is "hope" for this middle aged man. Bravely, this man gave it another try in life while holding on to that hope. The woman gave that man pure happiness and cured his sorrow. The man in the black suit who shot them with a shotgun is his depression. When hope found him first at the beginning of the video, the man in black suit was mad. Thus, somewhere in life, there will be ups and downs. The man appeared again shooting down hope and him. This scence may be the man trying to kill himself again but failed and wakes up in the hospital, realising that hope is always there again. This is just my speculations 😂

.that's brilliant what you wrote! intresting poin of view. (I think the man in black suit is just a vindictive husband)
