Judo is divided into two forms of training basically. 1 randori (free practice) and 2 kata (forms)...this is Kodokan Goshin Jutsu which is one of several kata. It's pretty basic but shows another side to Judo most don't know exists.

This Kata was devised by Kenji Tomiki who also developed Tomiki Aikido. Tomiki was one of the early students of the founder of aikido Morihei Ueshiba, beginning in 1926, and also of Jigoro Kano, the founder of judo. In 1928 he obtained 5th dan in judo and in the following year he represented Miyagi Prefecture in the first judo tournament held in front of the Emperor.

Aikidos history IS Daito Ryu Aiki Jujitsu, O'sensei only renamed it in the 40-50s....but he himself learned Aiki Jujitsu before he went to war in China. Jujutsu is the root of Judo and Aikido. Kano systemised Jujutsu to be taught in schools, could be used at sport, bought in the Dan/kyu grading systems and Gi in training, it was renamed Judo. It was this form, Goshin Jutsu, that was taught to 5dan up at Judo schools.....don't forget the roots of your martial history

Yes. And Kano and Ueshiba took different approaches to modernizing the deadly art: Kano's was to introduce competition and a point system, but to remove the wrist techniques which could be to dangerous if the partner resists. Ueshiba's was to ban competition altogether, and later to emphasize atemi and blending and ki to destablize uke.

DRAJ is not the root JJ of Judo. In fact the only common techniques, if I recall correctly, are from Tomiki, added quite some time after Judo had been established. I believe it is one two man kata against a sword, but I may be mistaken. The common roots of Judo and non-Tomiki Aikido go back before Takeda Sokaku, before DRAJ had name other than just jiu-jitsu.

The rote learning of kata and practice in dojo with people of different sizes will help to put these technique into the subconscious mind. therefore becoming a learnt reaction. There is little time to stop and think when being attacked. This is a demonstration of techniques that is to be practised. As is all kata

It's funny: 90% of the techniques in this video are Aikido, but if the video had had "Aikido" in the title it would have gotten three hundred dislikes and scores of nasty comments about how "this shit wouldn't work in a real fight."

+profd65 Judo, Aikido, same roots. Not surprising that the fruit of the tree would look similar. Plus, I suspect that if you tried that on this video, you comment would vanish as quickly as it was posted.

+profd65 it looks aikido becoz one of the members who formulated the goshin-jitsu curriculum in kodokan was kenji tomiki, one of the top students of ueshiba o'sensei (founder of aikido). Incidentally, ueshiba and jigoro kano were best friends.

The reason these techniques work against a gun is because of Uki's reaction time. It takes Uki time to pull the trigger once you start your attack. Once these techniques are practiced Tori should be able to disarm Uki before Uki can pull the trigger.
@roncooley112611 жыл бұрын
Tho most common pistol in Japan when this was put together was the Colt .45 semi-automatic US military issue sidearm. This kata works, not because of the type of gun, but because Uki has to mentally process Tori's attack and react to it before the trigger will be pulled.

I like weapon and grab defence katas in judo; if judo extracted these techniques from the kata then I wouldn't even have bothered training Ju Jitsu. I don't think Ju Jitsu punch/kick defence is realistic and Ju Jitsu lacks the randori of judo

I have so many questions, some of which are: why, in yoko geri, does the tori pull uke to his right, but kneels onto his left leg? Isn't he blocking his hips? Would it not be better to kneel onto your right leg, so that you can get more rotation? How come in twukkake tori doesn't need to put his knee on uke, but he did earlier when he applied the same technique? Why, in gammen tsuki, does tori move to uke's back, right side first, but wrap his right hand round the uke's neck, instead of his left hand? Wouldn't it make more sense to perform the larger motion in the direction you're already traveling? Rather than moving ro your right, but moving your right hand back to the left? Besides you already used your right hand to strike the uke, so it takes more time to get the hadaka jime on All these questions and more are confusing the shit out of me

Hey guys, thanks for this video. The more I see vintage videos like this one, Mifune or Kano, with Judo fundamentals, I cannot understand why competitive judo nowadays is more and more strenght... Shouldn´t we have less strengh and more "JU" (softness) winning the world championships? Can somone explain this? Rgds Ariel (from Brazil)

ZEN DIHN from what i've seen in bjj: ju and technique allos you to nullify a certain amaount aof power that is use against you and enhance the power you are able to dish out. if the discrepancy is to high, meaning you are going against a very strong and heavy opponent, all the technique in the world isn't going to win you the fight. try o goshi a small car. no matter how good yor technique, it can only make you a bit stronger than how you would be without it. now, for competition: strength and weight are much more easy to aquire and allow you to make mistakes in your technique. therefore, competitors, who might actually live off their martial art, condition themselves to win against maybe superior technique. that said: yes, condition yourself, as t prevents injury, is overall healthy and makes fights easier. but never neglect technique, as it may tilt the scale in your favour.
@guird47 жыл бұрын
I think it has to do with matching levels of skill. You put one judoka against a less skilled judoka, and they can throw them without using much strength, it will look effortless and soft. Or for that matter, you have a skilled jodoka performa compliant demonstration like this one, and again it shoudln't take any strength. But when you put judoka of approximately similar skill levels up against one another they need to use their EVERY resource to win, and that includes a great deal of strength.

It is kind of curious that the gun technique are more up to par than the knife techniques, even though there are some flaws in the gun disarming techniques like in koshi gamae where the gun cross the mid-line of tori while he disarms uke. Uke should have let the gun go but this often doesn't happen because of the trigger finger often trapped (and thus broken in the disarm) in the trigger guard. This can still lead to a discharge of the gun while pointing toward tori, wich is a risk one should avoid.

For koshi gamae did the commentator mispeak? He said that tori turns the pistol to the left, but that would result in him potentially getting shot, and it looks to me that the tori twists the pistol to the right
@GosokuRyuYodan11 жыл бұрын
At the distance they're working at, the advantage is to the uke. He can strike faster than the other person can react. Also, the "gunman" is of the mind that he is in control, letting down his guard. In addition, there must be MUCH training.
@jimmyalderson16396 жыл бұрын
Kake-dori doesn't work because people wear shoes now. I don't like deconstructing any techniques, but that one simply is ineffective unless you're attacked in a gym changing room or on a beach. I guess if you stomped on the instep that increases the effectiveness, but idk i'm still skeptical about that technique

The pistol defenses are a bit iffy. They would be quite good techniques if we're assuming that uke intends to kill tori, but sadly it's made abundantly clear that uke is trying to take tori's money. Tori's real defense is to stay still, stay quiet and give uke his money

+Riziotis Prevezas Dude. As far as i know it was only judo. But what tends to confuse people is the fact the Judo itself was called Jujutsu at the time. Judo is a Jujutsu School or ryu. History says that Judo came from a mix of Kito Ryu and Tenshin Shinyo Ryu. Some people say that Funakoshi was a big influence to Jigoro Kano and asked him for making a whole atemi waza kata for Judo. But it didn't Happen for some reason.

I'm not convinced by some of the knife attack kata. i would want to control the weapons arm, not the other.
@holdenmuganda973 жыл бұрын
This is an old comment but I think I have a reason why you’d attack the non-weapon hand. From what I hear with knife wielding, it’s generally better for the knife man to keep his weapon hand in the rear against an unarmed opponent to use his other hand as a shield or a way to grab and stab prison style. In that case the opposite arm (non-knife) may be the only arm available since you wouldn’t be able to grab the knife arm.

baffaaa on,h if you ask your teacher, and you may be expected to have someone who agrees to perform the kata with you as uke so that uke's part doesn't have to be taught to a different person every session. But these are very much a part of judo and if you can fulfill the requirements of having a consistant oartner there's no reason for your teacher not to help you teach it when they're free to
