Yeah this song is responsible for Rei getting killed. If it had not been playing, then Ken would not have had to slow down and do the cool-looking walk in order to match the song. Thus he would have gotten to Rei in time to help him.

When I first saw Hakuto No Ken I was moved when this song came on. I remember being deeply into the movie as we watched it and this song plays at such a pivotal, emotional moment. Such a tremendously great song that I'll never forget hearing for the first time.
