Kogun（孤軍） B

Toshiko Akiyoshi has formed a rehearsal band with Lew Tabackin since the spring of 1973 and has been practicing hard, and this is their memorable first album.
With all songs composed and arranged by Akiyoshi, the originality and high degree of perfection of the band led them to grow into one of the leading big band in this jazz world.
"Kogun" is a japanese creation and performance of jazz, and you can hear the crystallization of struggle to naturally mix the two different cultural traditions and heritages of the East and the West without compromise.

First time hearing her big band. My liking of big bands is uneven. Some I like a lot, others... the 3 that jump to my mind, that I have CDs of, are Stan Kenton 'Standards in Silouette', Joe Henderson, and a few McCoy Tyner big band efforts. This Kogun has some Kenton-ish influence, I think. So far I like it but have to hear a few more times.
